Unlike to other petroleum engineering department, we are focusing on unconventional energy resources. To produce oil and gas from unconventional energy resources, it is needed some special techniques because of its dierence with conventional ones. To BY: AFRIREKSA BOP DUANA study unconventional resources energy, we also need a basic concept of petroleum engineering itself. There are 2 major unconventional energy resources: oil sands or extra heavy oil deposits, which is a high-viscous oil that needs heat to flow, and shale gas or shale oil, which has low permeability that needs fractured rock to flow. These 2 resources can be found mostly in Canada, North America, Venezuela, and Argentina. Besides unconventional energy resources, our lab also works with carbon capture storage, which is a new technology that injects carbon dioxide back to earth crust as a storage for improving oil production. This happens because of the high carbon dioxide emission that harmful for the environment. This technology has been done also in Korea, at Pohang basin. Our lab is leaded by Professor Hyundon Shin, graduated from Seoul National University with a BSc and MSc degree in Applied Geology, and received his PhD degree at University of Alberta, Canada. Right now, we are 1 PhD student, 1 master student, and 2 integrated PhD students in our oces (2N263A and hi-tech building), working on diverse aspect of unconventional energy resources (oil sands and shale gas) and carbon capture storage technology. -

Songdo Free Economic Zone in South Korea: a Mega-Project Reflecting Globalization? Kim Jun-Woo* · Young-Jin Ahn**
Journal of the Korean Geographical Society, Vol. 46, No. 5, 2011(662~672) Songdo Free Economic Zone in South Korea: A Mega-project Reflecting Globalization? Kim Jun-Woo* · Young-Jin Ahn** 인천 송도 경제자유구역 개발 특성 -세계화를 반영한 거대 프로젝트인가?- 김준우*·안영진** Abstract:The actual mechanism of Songdo Free Economic Zone in Incheon, South Korea, has been provided. Contrary to previous researches, which either consider globalizing market force as naturally causing mega-projects or regarding the state as orchestrating mega-project in order to upgrade a national economy, this paper adopts a new approach. This approach acknowledges the importance of state in building Songdo. However, motivations of the bureaucrats were more about their own interest rather than that of the state. The plan of making Songdo a global business hub such as Singapore was not carefully planned. Boosting up local economy by initiating huge construction project and expansion of the bureaucratic organization were also important. The foreign school in Songdo, which is open to local children, is good news to high bureaucrats who are likely to send their kids abroad for education. -

Tourism in South Korea Module 2
MODULE 2 TOURISM IN SOUTH KOREA C o n t e n t P a r t n e r : 2 The most popular tourist destinations of South Korea among Indian travelers are Seoul, Busan and Jeju Island. Apart from these, some new destinations are also gaining popularity like Gyeongju (historical town near Busan) and Gangwon Region (for winter activities like Ski, Showboarding etc). Lets explore each of the following city in depth: • Seoul • Busan • Jeju Island • Gyeongju • Gangwon-do Region 3 SEOUL One of the most emerging, vibrant global cities of the world - Seoul is the capital and the largest city of South Korea. It is the main center of Korea‟s culture, education, politics and economy. Seoul is a perfect mix of ancient and modern culture - home to many historic sites and places of traditional culture; Seoul is also one of the leading economic powers of the world. Your guests will be spoilt for choices in the shopping and entertainment districts. 4 SEOUL The Han River, which runs through the center of the city, is a distinctive landscape of Seoul that offers a myriad of recreation areas for citizens and tourists. Seoul city is divided into 2 parts by Han River. The northern part is known as Gangbuk which is the older part of city with main downtown, govt. offices and sightseeing attractions. Remapping Songdo: a Genealogy of a Smart City in South Korea
REMAPPING SONGDO: A GENEALOGY OF A SMART CITY IN SOUTH KOREA BY CHAMEE YANG DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communications and Media in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2020 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor James Hay, Chair Professor Cameron McCarthy Associate Professor Anita Say Chan Associate Professor TF Tierney ABSTRACT This dissertation addresses the relationship between history, culture, technology, and urban governance in South Korea. It focuses on the technologies and techniques of making and governing a smart city and argues that they have been shaped by the long-term concerns for security, future, development, and globalization. This is not only evident in national economic policies and public discussions of the smart city and the new media technologies, but also in the spatial-material arrangement of urban environment and individual daily practices interacting with the digital environment. My examination of the New Songdo City in South Korea, one of the first smart cities in the world that is technically run by codes and data, provides a historically informed and locally specific account of what sociopolitical concerns, such as national security, public safety, climate change, and economic development, have guided the digitalization of urban governance. For instance, Songdo has deployed numerous sensors and cameras to monitor the urban infrastructures and public space. Contrary to the common public response to surveillance in the West, Koreans have rapidly adapted to the digital media environment and even perceived the monitoring technologies to be safely ‘watching over’ them.
