Next appeared the three wild, one-eyed Cyclopes, builders of gigantic walls and master-smiths…..Their names were Brontes, Steropes, and Arges.”[12] Next came the “Titans: Oceanus, Hypenon, Iapetus, Themis, Memory (Mnemosyne), Phoebe also Tethys, and Cronus the wily—youngest and most terrible of her children.”[11] “Cronus hated his lusty sire Heaven (Uranus). -

G Gaia or Ge (Γαῖα, Γῆ, Latin 'Tellus', 'Terra'). Mother earth, oldest of the gods, the personification of the antiquity and fertility of the earth, from which all life emerges, and to which it returns in death. Her main mythology is from Hesiod, who views earth as a flat disk, the first formation from the primeval *Chaos. As the original mother, she gave birth from herself first to Uranus, the sky, and then, with the articulation of her surface, she brought forth hills and Pontus, the sea. In the second phase of generation, she mated with Uranos to produce the twelve *Titans, the first of which was *Oceanus, the freshwater river which then encircled her. Next were the monstrous, one-eyed *Cyclopes, and then, among the most terrible of her children, the three *Hundred- handers. But their father Uranus would not allow them to be born, and to be relieved of the agony of her travail, Gaia plotted with the youngest Titan *Cronus to overthrow his father. She provided Cronus with a sickle, and hid him within her until Uranus spread himself over her in love; the son then castrated his father, and from the drops of blood that fell on the earth were born the *Erinyes, the *Giants, and the *Meliae, nymphs of the ash-tree (who in Hesiod are connected with the origins of the human race); the severed genitals of Uranus fell in the sea, floated to Cythera in Cyprus, and from them arose *Aphrodite. The emergence of sky and sea from earth, the marriage of earth and sky and the violence involved in their separation narrate the stages in the generation and separation of the world masses in the Hesiodic cosmogony. -

THE BIRDS By Aristophanes (Translator uncredited. Footnotes have been retained because they provide the meanings of Greek names, terms and ceremonies and explain puns and references otherwise lost in translation. Occasional Greek words in the footnotes have not been included. Footnote numbers, in brackets, start anew at (1) for each piece of dialogue, and each footnote follows immediately the dialogue to which it refers, labeled thus: f(1). THE BIRDS INTRODUCTION 'The Birds' differs markedly from all the other Comedies of Aristophanes which have come down to us in subject and general conception. It is just an extravaganza pure and simple—a graceful, whimsical theme chosen expressly for the sake of the opportunities it afforded of bright, amusing dialogue, pleasing lyrical interludes, and charming displays of brilliant stage effects and pretty dresses. Unlike other plays of the same Author, there is here apparently no serious political MOTIF underlying the surface burlesque and buffoonery. Some critics, it is true, profess to find in it a reference to the unfortunate Sicilian Expedition, then in progress, and a prophecy of its failure and the political downfall of Alcibiades. But as a matter of fact, the whole thing seems rather an attempt on the dramatist's part to relieve the overwrought minds of his fellow-citizens, anxious and discouraged at the unsatisfactory reports from before Syracuse, by a work conceived in a lighter vein than usual and mainly unconnected with contemporary realities. The play was produced in the year 414 B.C., just when success or failure in Sicily hung in the balance, though already the outlook was gloomy, and many circumstances pointed to impending disaster. -

the 2nd century BC Pergamon’s king Eumenes II consecrated the complex to Athena, bringer of victory. On the side of the courtyard, the balustrades between the upper-storey columns were decorated with reliefs of weapons; a few of the originals are mounted on the wall next to the gate. Depictions of trophies such as these were typ- ical features of ancient victory monuments. Behind the palace’s Heph- aistion Mosaic in the centre of the hall stands a colossal Hellenistic copy of the Athena Parthenos from the Acropolis in Athens that was found in Pergamon’s Athena sanctuary. To the left of the gate is a corner column with Corinthian capitals from the entrance to the courtyard of the Miletus town hall (bouleuter- ion). Capitals like these, decorated with a calyx of acanthus leaves, would become very popular in later Roman architecture. In the oppo - site corner a portion of the bouleuterion has been reconstructed. The structure illustrates how the highly experi- mental Hellenistic architects integrated traditional forms into new kinds of structures. The hall’s long walls feature sections of two famous large temple structures in their full original height. The Temple of Athena from Priene, begun in the 4th century BC, is considered a classic example of Ionic architecture in Asia Minor. -
Birds in the Ancient World from a to Z
BIRDS IN THE ANCIENT WORLD FROM A TO Z Why did Aristotle claim that male Herons’ eyes bleed during mating? Do Cranes winter near the source of the Nile? Was Lesbia’s pet really a House Sparrow? Ornithology was born in ancient Greece, when Aristotle and other writers studied and sought to identify birds. Birds in the Ancient World from A to Z gathers together the information available from classical sources, listing all the names that ancient Greeks gave their birds and all their descriptions and analyses. Arnott identifies (where achievable) as many of them as possible in the light of modern ornithological studies. The ancient Greek bird names are transliterated into English script, and all that the classical writers said about birds is presented in English. This book is accordingly the first complete discussion of classical bird names that will be accessible to readers without ancient Greek. The only previous study in English on the same scale was published over seventy years ago and required a knowledge of Greek and Latin. Since then there has been an enormous expansion in ornithological studies which has vastly increased our knowledge of birds, enabling us to evaluate (and explain) ancient Greek writings about birds with more confidence. With an exhaustive bibliography (partly classical scholarship and partly ornithological) added to encourage further study Birds in the Ancient World from A to Z is the definitive study of birds in the Greek and Roman world. Kurke, Chair Some of the earliest written records in the greater ancient world are lists of objects: we find catalogues of gods, kings, jewels, archaic vocabulary items, and exotic birds in Sumerian, Egyptian, Akkadian and Hittite, and many scholars surmise that a penchant for this kind of record-keeping fueled the very invention of writing. The Greeks, however, have long been considered distinct from other literate peoples both for their innovations with regard to the writing system they borrowed from the Phoenicians and for their application of that system, as they (a) were the first to denote vowels with stand-alone symbols, and (b) seem to used the alphabet to record poetry, not archival information, before anything else. In fact, it is not until several hundred years after these first ‘literary’ texts that the alphabetic Greeks begin to produce the government inventories, war memorials, or tribute lists akin to those of their Near Eastern and Mycenean predecessors. In this project, I study these kinds of official epigraphic written lists alongside lists from Archaic and Classical Greek literature in an effort to reorient the discourse surrounding the Greeks’ literacy and use of writing, and its purported uniqueness. -

Enclosing in a short space a remarkable quantity of information, it offers concise and comprehensive accounts of most of the myths that had come to matter beyond local boundaries, providing its readers with their most popular variants. This study concentrates on the most familiar stories contained in the first book of the Bibliotheke and their proper place in the overall structure of Greek mythology. Chapter One is dedicated to the backbone of Apollodoros’ work: the chronological organisation of Greek mythical history in genealogies. It discusses the author’s individual plan in the arrangement and presentation of his material and his conscious striving for cohesion. -

Two Is Company, Three Is A Crowd: An analysis of the relationships between Herakles, Hera & Zeus in Apollodoros’ Bibliotheke Jessica Casbolt A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirement for the degree of Master of Arts in Classical Studies 2013 School of Art History, Classics and Religious Studies 1 Abstract This thesis examines the relationships between Herakles, Hera and Zeus in five mythic episodes in the Bibliotheke: the punishment of Hera; the Gigantomachy; Herakles’ birth and early life; the madness of Herakles; and his death, apotheosis and marriage to Hebe. These episodes display a variety of interactions between the figures across the life of Herakles. From his birth to his death and apotheosis, his relationship with Hera is of a contentious nature. Zeus’ involvement in the life of Herakles is often absent during crucial points. Apollodoros’ Bibliotheke is a survey of myth composed by an author who evidently had considerable literary resources to hand. What this means for the work is that the options available to Apollodoros were vast; thus we must attribute a great deal of choice to him in his compilations of the myths. As a result, when viewing the relationships between the three figures, we can investigate Apollodoros’ adjustments to the myths and attempt to uncover how he wished to portray the figures of Herakles, Hera and Zeus. As well as displaying information in the text, Apollodoros’ strict structuring method also presents us with more information. The genealogical structure forms the backbone of the work; it is in the deliberate placements of certain myths, however, such as the Punishment of Hera (Bib 1.3.5; 2.7.1) and the Gigantomachy (1.6.1; 2.7.1), that we see the effect of his conscious decisions in regard to the structure of the Bibliotheke. -
