Jahrhundert .......................................................................................273 Vorwort des Herausgebers Von der im Rahmen des OTKA-Projekts Klassisches Altertum, Byzanz und Humanismus. Kritische Quellenedition mit Erläuterungen (NN 104456) wirken- den philologischen Forschungsgruppe wurde bei der XI. Ungarischen Konferenz für Altertumsforschung (22.–24. Mai 2014, ELTE Budapest) eine separate, eigen- ständige Tagung veranstaltet. Mehrere Mitarbeiter anderer Institute haben sich hierbei den Forschern des Eötvös-József-Collegiums der ELTE angeschlossen, so dass die Vortragenden der Tagung die zahlenmäßig stärkste Gruppe der renom- mierten ungarischen Konferenz für Altertumskunde bildeten. Obwohl die in den Vorträgen und in hier abgedruckten Studien repräsentierten Forschungsbereiche durch die thematische Vielfalt des Forschungsinteressen bedingt in vielen Fällen keine unmittelbaren Berührungspunkte aufweisen (können), so haben sich doch die Forschungsmethode, die gemeinsame philologische Perspektive und die Liebe zur Wissenschaft ganz im Sinne der Organisatoren wieder einmal als stark verbindende und identitätstiftende Kräfte erwiesen. Sorgfältige Rezeption und präzise Deutung der primären Quellen – alt- und neugriechischer, lateinischer, altfranzösischer, italienischer und englischer Texte, von Papyri und Codices, sowie philosophischer und astrologischer Abhandlungen – bilden unseres Erachtens das Fundament der historisch-phi- lologischer Forschung. Auf diesem Fundament – allerdings ohne den soliden Boden der Empirie unter den Füßen zu verlieren – haben sich die Autoren vorliegenden Bandes auf die Suche nach breiteren Zusammenhängen und um- fassend-ganzheitlichen Interpretationen gemacht. Mit dem Band erhält der Leser somit eine echte „Blütenlese” – eine Anthologie im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes. Falls er bereit ist, die Mühen der Verfasser zu- mindest teilweise auf sich zu nehmen und die Texte aufmerksam zu lesen, so wird er zweifelsohne ein einmaliges geistiges Abenteuer miterleben können. Von all dem bin ich nicht nur aufgrund meiner Eindrücke als Zuhörer bei der Tagung, sondern auch als Herausgeber des Bandes nach der fesselnden Lektüre der hier abgedruckten Beiträge zutiefst überzeugt. Ich darf mich bei den Referenten der Tagung und den Autoren des Bandes für ihren Beitrag zum Zustandekommen des vorliegenden Testimoniums herzlichst bedanken. Budapest, den 31. August 2014 László Horváth ANTIQUITAS Tibor Szepessy La fin de l’histoire. Quelques contributions au roman d’Achille Tatius* Achille Tatius n’a pas besoin d’être présenté. Son roman Leucippé et Clitophon, en huit livres, fait partie des cinq romans d’amour ou « roman idéaux » grecs qui nous sont parvenus dans leur intégralité et que les spécialistes ont surnom- més les « cinq grands ». Après de longues années d’incertitude, les recherches de ces dernières décennies ont permis de situer la naissance de ce roman avec une grande probabilité dans le dernier tiers du iie siècle apr. J.-C.1, c’est-à-dire dans une époque qui serait, d’après nos connaissances actuelles, l’âge d’or des romans de l’Antiquité. Bien évidemment, les papyrus ont joué un rôle majeur dans la datation : neuf fragments du Leucippé et Clitophon ont été découverts à ce jour, ce qui est, de par le nombre, comparé aux autres romans antiques qui nous sont restés, le plus important 2 (la découverte la plus récente ne remontant qu’à guère quelques années) ; de plus, ces fragments viennent de pas moins de sept (!) exemplaires antiques3. Ces découvertes fournissent des preuves supplémentaires à ce que nous savions déjà sur l’auteur : il devait faire partie, avec Héliodore, un autre romancier, des écrivains les plus populaires de la Byzance chrétienne. Leur parallèle ne s’arrête pas là : Achille Tatius aussi sera pris pour un évêque et ses héros, un couple d’amour, Leucippé et Clitophon se verront attribués l’honneur d’être les parents de deux saints qui souffrirent le martyr sous Dèce : Galaction et Épistème. Les propos par lesquels Helen Morales commence son livre sur Achille Tatius sont révéla- teurs : elle affirme qu’il s’agit, à sa connaissance, de la première monographie consacrée à Achille Tatius4. La forme narrative suscite à elle seule la désapprobation des lecteurs : pour- quoi donner la parole à un narrateur à la première personne5, contrairement à ce que font les autres auteurs de roman d’amour ? Et pourquoi de surcroît y a-t-il deux narrateurs : l’auteur qui fait

The compilation of the three-part book of the Kingdom of Hungary’s customary law was commenced in 1504 by István Werbőczy, who was later elevated from lord chief justice to palatine, and was completed in 1514. The stamps show the cover page of the translation of the Tripartitum, published in Debrecen in 1565. The stamp was designed by the graphic artist György Kara and produced by the ANY Security Printing Company. The new issue will be available at large post offices and Filaposta in Hungary from 4 July, but may also be purchased from Magyar Posta’s online store. In the 15th century feudal fragmentation and attempts to centralise appeared in the field of the law-making. The sources of the law used in charters were unclear and different legal rules were applied in different cities. Following German, Czech and Polish precedents, the need for a unified code of laws became apparent in Hungary as well. Lord Chief Justice István Werbőczy was appointed to complete this task by Vladislaus II of Hungary. The diet of 1514 approved the Tripartitum, which also received the king’s assent, but the magnates on the royal council did not want the lesser nobility to be involved in government and for this reason obstructed its promulgation and introduction.

    Digital Editing of Medieval Manuscripts - Intellectual Output 1: Resources for Editing Medieval Texts (Paleography, Codicology, Philology) The history of books and libraries in Bohemia Michal Dragoun (Charles Univeristy in Prague) While books were initially rare in medieval Bohemia, they would come to play an important role in the lives of all social classes by the end of the Middle Ages. The pace of that advancement was not, however, constant. Many factors contributed to spread of books and to their use, some of them pushed the advancement forward significantly, others less significantly. Books were initially a monopoly of the Church and its institutions but gradually, the circle of book users extended to the laity and more and more texts came to be written in vernacular languages. Acknowledging the abundance or research into medieval books and libraries more generally, this overview will comment only on the most significant moments in the book culture of medieval Bohemia. There are two fundamental turning points in the history of Medieval Bohemian book culture – these were the establishment of a university in Prague, and the Hussite Reformation. To provide a brief overview of types of libraries, it is necessary to categorize them and study the development of individual categories. In any case, the Hussite period was the real turning point for a number of them. Sources The sheer abundance of sources provides the basis for a comprehensive overview of Bohemian book culture. The manuscripts themselves are the most significant source. However, the catalogues used to study Bohemian collections tend to be very old. As a result, the records are often incomplete and contextual information is often unavailable.

Transylvania was part of the mediaeval Kingdom of Hungary beginning from the founding of this kingdom and until the year 1540, when, due to historic circumstances, it became for a time a separate entity . The development of private law in this historical space was therefore in the beginning in large part convergent with that of Hungary . However, having a multi-ethnic population consisting of Hungarians, Szeklers, Saxons, and Romanians, with the first three nationalities benefitting from different, autonomous forms of administrative organization, a lot is to be said of specific Transylvanian private law. This study presents those elements and sources of private law which characterized legal relationships in Transylvania beginning with the founding of the Kingdom of Hungary and until the separation of this region from Hungary due to Ottoman conquest . We examine the major sources of law, consisting of customary law, statutory law, and acts of royal power . We then present in summarized form the main characteristics and provisions of the law applicable to persons, the family, immovable and movable property but also inheritance. Some specific private law regulations applicable to Szeklers and Saxons are also presented as well as the perspective of Romanian legal literature regarding the private law applicable to Romanians . CEU eTD Collection i Abstract This thesis provides a look the fundamental programmatic articles of the Croatian National Revival. It attempts to first contextualize the Croatian national movement within the context of the Habsburg Monarchy, and especially in regards to the relationship of Croatia and Hungary. Secondly, the thesis attempts to explore the possible continuity between the ideology of the Croatian National Revival and the Enlightenment. This is done using some of the fundamental documents of the national movement. Looking at the political program of the national movement, I attempt to identify the influences of the Enlightenment in both explicit and implicit level. Furthermore, as this thesis is on a fundamental level concerned with nationalism, I will explore the interaction between the political programs of the national movement and historical narratives as both are often found in the same text.

The research undertaken by the Author concentrates on Polish descendants of Regina, the elder of two daughters of King Sigismund I the Old and his long time mistress – Katarzyna Telniczanka. Until now, it was assumed that the last descendants of the king were his great-grandsons – Władysław Strasz of Białaczów and his sister Krystyna who lived in the first half of the 17th century. Thanks to the documents found by the Author, it was possible to establish that the mother of the above-mentioned Władysław and Krystyna – Urszula Strasz née Kreza, had a sister – Zofia, who married Baltazar Lutomirski. From her daughter, Zofia née Lutomirska 1st married Stanisław Trembiński (Trębiński), 2nd married Franciszek Szamowski, come all descendants of Sigismund I the Old and Katarzyna Telniczanka, both historical and living ones. The article presents a list of all the king’s descendants from the beginning of the 16th to the turn of the 18th and 19th century. In total, it was a number of 114 people (58 men and 56 women). It is worth noting that until the end of the first quarter of the 17th century, the descendants of Sigismund I and KatarzynaPNH Telniczanka were Calvinists. They were almost exclusively representatives of wealthy and middle-class nobles.

With a Special Focus on the Activities of Institoris in Olomouc in 1499–1505 Petr Kreuz Prague City Archives Abstract In the last years of his life the author of the Hammer of Witches (Malleus Maleficarum), the Black (Dominican) friar Heinrich Kramer-Institoris held the office of papal inquisitor for the Bohemian (Czech) Lands. This period of his life is closely connected with his stay in the Olomouc diocese, specifically in the city of Olomouc (germ. Olmütz). Institoris was installed as inquisitor for the Bohemian Lands already in January 1499 by Pope Alexander VI, evidently at the instigation of the bishop of Olomouc Stanislav (Stanislaus) Thurzo. Institoris held the aforementioned office from 1499 until the end of his lifetime. The date of his death is traditionally quoted as the year 1505.
