Toward the end of 1949, Raymond and Poulet embarked on a long correspondence reporting on and discussing their respective work. Form and Signification in Motion In 1950, the three names René Wellek (1992) associated with "The Geneva School" were Raymond (1897-1981), Béguin (1901-1957), and Poulet (1902-1991). Olivier Pot Later, two of Raymond's students, Jean Rousset (1910-2002) and Jean translated by Helena Taylor Starobinski (1920) joined this initial circle. Poulet, who from 1952 had taken up a post at Johns Hopkins University in Bàltimore, introduced Starobinski to the circle in 1954, and in the same year he became acquainted with Jean Rousset's thesis (Rousset 1953). Historians sometimes also add Poulet's doctoral student, Jean-Pierre Richard (1922; Richard 2002, 47-48) to this "The Geneva School" was the term used from the 1950s and 1960s to group. The term "Nouvelle critique"' appears for the first time in Poulet's describe a group of literary cri tics who belonged to the movement known in preface to Richard's book, Littérature et sensation published in 1954. In France as the Nouvelle Critique, following the confrontation between Picard 1956, Poulet accepted a chair in literature at Zurich University, probably and Barthes over Sur Racine in 1963. -

Pp. xv + 285. $24.95. Irene Harvey makes it plain from the outset that this is a philosopher's book, designed in large part to rescue Derrida from the false characterization of his work put about by literary critics. Her reading will proceed by way of textual explication, but not-most certainly-the kind of exuberant verbal "freeplay" espoused by his admireres in deparbnents of literature. Rather, its approach will be to place Derrida's writings in a post-Kantian tradition where issues of epistemological critique are still very much on the agenda. Decon struction may seem to have shelved such questions in its will to break with the prevailing discourse of Western "logocentric" reason. Certainly this has been the reading canvassed by those who want to argue that philosophy is just another kind of writing, with no privileged truth-claims that would set it apart from poetry, criticism or the human sciences at large. Some (like Geof frey Hartman) have seized upon those elements in Derrida's work that seem to subvert such merely institutional boundary-lines, and to open up a space of liberated intertextuality -

Although there 2 is no playing down of the immensity of the implications of Derrida’s work, Royle’s direct and often funny mode of address will make it less threatening than it can often 3 appear to beginners’. Derek Attridge, University of York. 4 In this entertaining and provocative introduction, Royle offers lucid explanations of var- 5 ious key ideas, including deconstruction, differance and the democracy to come. He also 6 gives attention, however, to a range of perhaps less obvious topics, such as earthquakes, 7 animals and animality, ghosts, monstrosity, the poematic, drugs, gifts, secrets, war and 8 mourning. Derrida is seen as an extraordinarily inventive thinker, as well as a brilliantly 9 imaginative and often very funny writer. Other critical introductions tend to highlight the specifically philosophical nature and genealogy of his work. Royle’s book proceeds 30111 in a new and different way, in particular by focusing on the crucial but strange place of 1 literature in Derrida’s writings. He thus provides an appreciation and understanding 2 based on detailed reference to Derrida’s texts, interwoven with close readings of liter- 3 ary works. In doing so, he explores Derrida’s consistent view that deconstruction is a 4 ‘coming-to-terms with literature’. -

Signed: _______________________________ Date: 23/03/2020 2 Abstract This thesis explores the ethics of relating oneself to temporality that emerges in the philosophies of Henri Bergson, Emmanuel Levinas and Gilles Deleuze. Focusing on Bergson’s, Levinas’ and Deleuze’s respective suggestions as to how an ethical relation to a time of novelty is effectuated, this thesis argues that each of those ethical models retains a problematic relation to history, and that a potential resolution to this problem is only found in Deleuze and Guattari’s joint work. Starting with an exploration of Bergson’s metaphysical writings, this thesis argues that Bergson’s conception of intuition remains insufficiently attuned to that practice’s implication with the domain of history, and that this presents a problem for Bergson’s ethical philosophy. The thesis then turns to Bergson’s The Two Sources of Morality and Religion to argue that this text, despite seemingly historicising the intuition, in fact fails to provide a resolution to the problem of history that announces itself in Bergson’s metaphysical writings. Motivated by these failures in the Bergsonian oeuvre, this thesis then turns its attention to two self-professed Bergsonians, Levinas and Deleuze, to consider the extent to which their respective ethical philosophies can be said to provide a resolution to the Bergsonian problem of history. -

ABSTRACT The goal of this paper is to provide a “transcendental critical” interpretation of Lacanian psychoanalysis through an examination of the historical circumstances surrounding the development of Lacan's ideas and their underlying philosophical basis. Rather than operating as a closed system, I argue that Lacanian thought functions on the basis of "parallax" between irreconcilable positions (e.g., Kleinian vs. Anna-Freudian psychoanalysis, structuralism vs. poststructuralism) stemming from a central antinomy.
