Theory of Forms 1 Theory of Forms Plato's theory of Forms or theory of Ideas[1] [2] [3] asserts that non-material abstract (but substantial) forms (or ideas), and not the material world of change known to us through sensation, possess the highest and most fundamental kind of reality.[4] When used in this sense, the word form is often capitalized.[5] Plato speaks of these entities only through the characters (primarily Socrates) of his dialogues who sometimes suggest that these Forms are the only true objects of study that can provide us with genuine knowledge; thus even apart from the very controversial status of the theory, Plato's own views are much in doubt.[6] Plato spoke of Forms in formulating a possible solution to the problem of universals. Forms Terminology: the Forms and the forms The English word "form" may be used to translate two distinct concepts that concerned Plato—the outward "form" or appearance of something, and "Form" in a new, technical nature, that never ...assumes a form like that of any of the things which enter into her; ... But the forms which enter into and go out of her are the likenesses of real existences modelled after their patterns in a wonderful and inexplicable manner.... The objects that are seen, according to Plato, are not real, but literally mimic the real Forms. In the allegory of the cave expressed in Republic, the things that are ordinarily perceived in the world are characterized as shadows of the real things, which are not perceived directly. That which the observer understands when he views the world mimics the archetypes of the many types and properties (that is, of universals) of things observed. -

For more information, please contact [email protected]. A Phenomenological Interpretation of Religion via Pre-Socratic Thinking Introduction: What is religion? What does the concept of religion mean? Today, the word ‘religion’ appears everywhere; a seemingly all pervasive notion associated with a vast array of phenomena, including: war, terrorism, politics, science fiction, morality, and of course, with delusion and irrationality. However, what religion is, or what it means, remains a highly contested matter. It will be the aim of this paper to offer an interpretation of the meaning of the concept of religion by using just one of many philosophical ways of approaching religion, namely; phenomenology as ontology. The paper will focus upon the remaining fragments of three Pre-Socratic philosophers; Anaximander, Heraclitus, and Parmenides, seeking in these fragments the basic conceptual subject matter for an interpretation of the meaning of religion. I will argue that these fragments reveal that the meaning of religion is a relation between being-human and what gets called the arche (or ground of being). Further, I will argue that this relation can be conceptually determined as a quest for ground: the ground of the human sense of being and of grounding thinking, meaning, truth, and purpose… Ultimately, I will argue in this paper that there are two essential characteristics of the meaning of religion as this relation to ground(ing). -
The Phaedo by Plato
Selections from The Phaedo by Plato The Death of Scorates, David, 1787. [The Phaedo tells the story of Socrates’ final moments spent, as one would expect, in philosophical dialogue with his friends. The main subject of the dialogue is the immortality of the soul. The Phaedo is one of Plato’s middle period dialogues and, as such, reveals much of Plato’s own philosophy. In the arguments Socrates puts forth for the immortality of the soul we find a clear exposition of both Plato’s metaphysics as well as his epistemology. In the first section we find Socrates explaining to his friends why a true philosopher does not fear death. Philosophy is here described as a preparation for death.] ECHECRATES: Were you there with Socrates yourself, Phaedo, when he was executed, or 57 did you hear about it from somebody else? PHAEDO: No, I was there myself, Echecrates. ECHECRATES: Then what did the master say before he died, and how did he meet his end? I should very much like to know. None of the people in Phlius go to Athens much in these days, and it is a long time since we had any visitor from there who could give us any definite b information, except that he was executed by drinking hemlock. Nobody could tell us anything more than that. PHAEDO: Then haven't you even heard how his trial went? 58 ECHECRATES: Yes, someone told us about that, and we were surprised because there was obviously a long interval between it and the execution. ON THE ORIGIN OF THE WORLD (CG II,5): A GNOSTIC PHYSICS BY PHEME PERKINS The preface to the fifth tractate in codex II from Nag Hammadi, On the Origin of the World, claims to engage the reader in a cosmological discussion about the arrangement of chaos. Interpretations of this work usually assume that once the author has shown chaos to be "shadow" and not a primal reality, his cosmological interests end and gnostic mytholo- gizing takes over. Alexander B6hlig, for example, treats the philosophical language as part of a mythological syncretism designed to present the plan of salvation that will destroy the world.' While some attempts have been made to incorporate Gnostic materials into the study of middle Platon- ism,2 Heinrich D6rrie's judgment that Gnostic cosmologies represent "the facile musings of mediocre minds," para-philosophical ramblings of the semi-erudite, reflects the usual view. Such judgments seem unsound, in part because they discount the intellectual interests of Gnostic specu- lation - thus manifesting the same distaste for their negative cosmology as in the rhetoric of Plotinus' refutatio, where the genre dictates such com- ments, - and because the Nag Hammadi texts are showing an increasing variety of philosophical allusions; and finally because myth played a larger role in hellenistic cosmological speculation than it is usually given credit for. For example, the Hesiod passage on chaos usually cited as the source for the opening reference to chaos in this treatise3 was allegorized by Zeno.4 Linking 'chaos' to the verb cheesthai, Zeno associates it with the element water; earth appears as itself; Tartarus is air; and eros, fire.5 Such identifications are presupposed in Orig. -

Julie Stayton The Immortality of the Soul in Plato’s Phaedo In his dialogue, the Phaedo, Plato gives an account of the immortality of the soul. Plato does this through an argument commonly referred to as the “final argument.” The title stems from the fact that the final argument occurs at the finale of Plato’s dialogue and follows three less conclusive “arguments” for the immortality of the soul. My thesis is two-fold. First, I will give an interpretation of Plato’s final argument in the Phaedo, outlining the ontological presuppositions that Plato relies on for the validity of his argument. Secondly, I will discuss some of the key features of the previous three arguments in the Phaedo. It is my view that the final argument stands on its own as an analysis of the immortality of the soul. However, I believe it is useful to examine the previous three arguments in the dialogue in conjunction with the final argument, as several of the key concepts Plato uses in the final argument are introduced and expanded upon earlier. -

“Teaching Writing in Philosophy Courses” Essay Assignment, Part One PHIL301 Over the course of the semester, you will construct an essay on the significance of Ancient Greek philosophy. The essay will be constructed in stages, which will culminate in a substantial essay due at the semester’s end. The first major element of the essay will concern the Pre-Socratics. You will write a short essay indicating the significance of this philosophical period. The second major element of the essay will concern the significance of Socrates and/or Plato. This essay will incorporate the first: you will revise the first essay so as to fit with materials of the second. Thirdly, you will add a research element to your existing discussion. You will find a secondary source assisting your commentary on the significance of Ancient Greek philosophy and incorporate it into your essay. Incorporation into the final draft of material from Aristotle will be encouraged but not mandatory. Part One: Essay One Note-Taking: Your first exercise is to demonstrate good note-taking practice. This will involve a succinct summary of a text along with a brief evaluation of it. Concept Explication: Your second exercise is to state and explain a key concept by reference to one or more of our authors. This will be a formal writing assignment, to be incorporated into the draft of Essay One. Deron Boyles 229 Plato’s Theaetetus: Formation Over Forms? Deron Boyles Georgia State University INTRODUCTION Plato’s Theaetetus offers the opportunity to consider epistemology in ways that importantly explore the meaning of “student” and “teacher.” Specifically, this article argues that the dialogue’s characters—Theodorus, Theaetetus, Protagoras, and Socrates—perform functions that not only reveal competing philosophies of education but templates of and for student engagement as formation. As a text, Theaetetus provides a noteworthy means through which students not only read and think about elenchus (refutation) and aporia (perplexity) but experience it as participants in interlocution. Additionally, the dialogue itself represents formation insofar as it is an instance of Plato’s move away from the Theory of Forms and his further development of midwifery. Proceeding in three parts, this paper 1) provides a brief overview of the dialogue; 2) underscores the representational nature of the characters in the dialogue—and the part they play in student formation; and 3) explores the Socrates-as-midwife motif and the overall marginalization of Forms in the dialogue. In short, this paper argues for understanding the Theaetetus as an aporetic dialogue about formation over Forms.1 BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE DIALOGUE Theaetetus begins with a prologue that takes place just before Socrates’ death, in 399 BCE, and begins with Socrates asking Theodorus if he knows of any young men he thinks have potential. Theodorus recommends Theaetetus and the dialogue proceeds with Socrates asking Theaetetus “What do you think knowledge is?” (146c).2 Initially, Theaetetus only offers examples of knowledge (ousia) rather than providing a definition of knowledge itself eidos( ).
