From an analysis of his experimental Iprowess, his written contributions, his lectures, and even from the details of the illustrations he used in his published papers or during his lectures to scientific and other audiences, Ahmed Zewail, by this or any other definition, was a stylist par excellence. For more than a quarter of a century, I interacted with Ahmed (and members of his family) very regularly. Sometimes he and I spoke several times a week during long-distance calls. Despite our totally different backgrounds we became the strongest of friends, and we got on with one another like the proverbial house on fire. We collaborated scientifi- cally and we adjudicated one another’s work, as well as that of others. We frequently exchanged culturally interesting stories. We each relished the challenge of delivering popular lectures. In common with very many others, I deem him to be unforgettable, for a variety of different reasons. He was one of the intellectually ablest persons that I have ever met. He possessed elemental energy. He executed a succession of brilliant experiments. And, almost single-handedly, he created the subject of femtochemistry, with all its magnificent manifestations and ramifications. From the time we first began to exchange ideas, I felt a growing affinity for his personality and attitude. This was reinforced when I told him that, ever since I was a teenager, I had developed a deep interest in Egyptology and a love for modern Egypt.

The policy of multiculturalism, growing since the 1970s years in many countries of the world has always been through understanding the diversity of cultures, identities, points of view — to come to an understanding of unity and wholeness. And thereby reduce tension in the society, to reduce the number of conflicts to reach the realization that any two people, no matter how they differed from each other, are part of humanity. And, therefore, their culture can interact, intertwine, to become part of human culture. Of course, education can become a powerful driving force in the process of bringing people and cultures. This thesis represents the mission of the UWC, or the United World Colleges founded in 1962 and is today recognised around the world. UWC to date is 17 schools and colleges on four continents and more than 60 000 graduates. ONAMI is an unprecedented collaboration between the state’s three major research universities, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, the State of Oregon, and private industry. Industrial partners include such Oregon giants as Hewlett-Packard Co., Intel, Tektronics, FEI Company, and Electro Scientific Indus- tries. Chemistry Professor Vince Remcho became involved with ONAMI through his participation in the OSU/PNNL Microproducts Breakthrough Institute. Part of the ONAMI concept is to encourage small business growth in the Oregon high-tech sec- tor. The ONAMI facility at HP will be an incubator for OSU/UO/PSU interactions with small business start-ups; space will be available for these businesses to under- take work of mutual interest to ONAMI principals. It will be located in Building 11 of the Hewlett-Packard Company’s Corvallis campus for two to three years, until the OSU ONAMI team can move in to a renovated Graf Hall. Research at ONAMI should bring millions of federal research dollars to Oregon and could give Oregon the national recognition it deserves in the world of nanotech- nology and microscale research and development. Remcho comments, “This is an inviting environment to work in as a researcher, and I hope that it will be a means of involving graduate and undergraduate students in work that leads to employment op- portunities.

    Collecting Punched Tin Lanterns By Grant Hamilton Many of us who make an attempt to limit our lantern collections to models that were specifically used on railroads still find ourselves picking up interesting examples of other types of lighting. Many collections end up including non-railroad models from a favorite manufacturer, or unusual early lanterns. One such lantern is the punched or pierced tin lantern. Although use of these lanterns by railroads was probably very limited (oil lanterns with glass globes were widely available by the time railroads began regular night operations), it is not unlikely that some saw railroad service. In locations where a broken oil lamp or lantern created a greater fire hazard, a well enclosed candle lantern was needed. The punched tin lantern was also easier to produce in regions that were far removed from the major glass-making centers. They were also no doubt used on stage coaches, ships, and the other early modes of transportation. Regardless of where it was used, a pierced tin lantern makes a nice addition to any collection, and provides a connection to an early period in our country’s history. The following article is reprinted from the monthly New York - Pennsylvania Collector magazine, and provides an excellent overview of the history of this well-known form of early lighting. The punched (or pierced) tin lantern has been a symbol of Early America in many illustrations and serves as a colonial craft project for school groups and adults at interpretive historical sites. They are often misnamed “Paul Revere” lanterns in reference to the “one if by land, two if by sea” account of the famous signaling of the movement of British troops in Boston.
