Proof of Quorum PSSC Executive Director, Dr. Amaryllis Torres, confirmed the presence of a quorum with12 out of 14 regular members and 23 out of 35 associate members present. Approval of the Proposed Agenda The General Assembly approved the proposed agenda. Approval of the Minutes of the 2013 Annual General Membership Meeting The General Assembly approved the minutes of the 2013 Annual General Assembly without any correction. Business Arising from the Minutes of the Previous Meeting Dr. Martin informed the body that matters arising from the minutes of the meeting will be taken up in the reports of the Chairperson, Treasurer, and the Membership Committee Chair. New Business Chairperson’s Report Dr. Martin began her report by expressing her gratitude to the members of the Executive Committee, members of the 2012-2014 Board of Trustees (BOT), members of PSSC working committees, and the secretariat. Dr. Martin recounted that following the appointment of Dr. Amaryllis Torres as head of the PSSC Secretariat, a strategic planning meeting was held to set the direction and goals of the Council. A review of the PSSC Operations Manual by the BOT was also done to align the structure of the PSSC Secretariat with the goals of the Council. Dr. Martin reported on the various activities and programs undertaken by the Council in 2013. She noted that PSSC awarded research grants to seven graduate students upon the recommendation of the Research Committee. Three of the seven grantees are enrolled in Master’s programs, and the rest in PhD programs. Two out four 2011 grantees and five out of 13 2012 grantees have completed their theses/dissertations and completed their degrees in 2013. Meanwhile, the Grants Committee recommended support for 10 individuals to present their papers at various international conferences. Seven of the grantees were endorsed by regular member-organizations of PSSC and the remaining three grantees were affiliated with associate member-organizations. PSSC successfully staged the Seventh National Social Science Congress (NSSC VII) with the theme ‘Generations’ on 29-31 May 2013 at the PSSCenter. The conference was keynoted by Randolf David, Professor Emeritus of the University of the Philippines. Forty-three papers on several topics were presented during the conference. In addition to this, PSSC co- organized two roundtable discussions on Philippine elections/electoral politics and on the fourth State of the Nation Address of President Benigno Aquino Jr. with PPSA and the UP Department of Political Science. 6 PSSC’s regular member-organizations have also been very active in 2013. They held their respective conferences, nine of which were supported by PSSC’s conference grant. Eight regular member-association released the 2013 issue of their journals on time, including the Philippine Review of Economics, Historical Bulletin, Journal of History, Philippine Political Science Journal, Philippine Sociological Review, The Philippine Statistician, Philippine Journal of Psychology and Aghamtao. The Philippine Journal of Psychology was the top selling journal in 2013 followed by the Philippine Sociological Review and Philippine Journal of Linguistics. The Council also conferred the first VAM Excellence in Research Award. The recipient of the award was Marco Stefan Lagman for his article entitled “Land as Property and Resource in 19th Century Pampanga” (Journal of History). Prof. Lagman is with the Department of Geography- University of the Philippines-Diliman and, is a member of the Philippine National Historical Society. Dr. Martin also reported on PSSC’s international engagements. PSSC successfully hosted the 20th Biennial General Conference of the Association of Asian Social Science Research Councils (AASSREC) with the theme “Ageing in Asia Pacific: Balancing the State and the Family” on 4-6 April 2013 at Cebu Parkalane Hotel, Cebu City. Senator Edgardo Angara and Dr. Yasuhiko Saito of Nihon University, Japan delivered the keynote speeches. The country paper was prepared by Dr. Grace Cruz of the UP Population Institute and Philippine Population Association. At the business meeting following the conference, Dr. Martin was re-elected President of AASSREC. Meanwhile, Dr. Torres represented PSSC at the International Social Science Council (ISSC) General Assembly and World Social Science Forum in Montreal, Canada on 10-15 October 2013. She was also elected to the Executive Committee of ISSC. In addition, Dr. Torres also represented PSSC at the Science Council of Asia (SCA) at the SCA meeting in Bangkok on 7-9 May 2013. Dr. Martin also discussed PSSC’s special projects. She reported the successful launching of the 9th publication of PMRN entitled Interrogating Migration: New Issues and Emerging Trends in the Philippines on 30 May 2013. Edited by PMRN Secretary-General Jorge Tigno, the book features research papers written by Geoffrey Ducanes, Ma. Elissa Lao, Jean Encinas- Franco, Carmel Abao, Jean Paul Zialcita, and Jorge Tigno. A roundtable discussion on the state of internal migration was also organized by PMRN on 27 September 2013 at PSSC. PSSC completed the digitization of the publication of twelve pioneers in the social sciences through the support of the UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines (UNACOM). Their works are now available at www.thepioneersproject.org. Meanwhile, the second phase of the digitization project with the Commission on Higher Education is underway. The second phase involves the scanning of additional journals such as the Philippine Geographical Journal, The Philippine Statistician, Philippine Planning Journal and IPC publications. The electronic materials from the first phase of the project are temporarily being hosted by the National Library and can be accessed at http://116.50.242.171/PSSC/.
