One way to mitigate these problems is to expand green spaces. Roofs, as the last frontier, could be made full use of. Green roofs have become a hot topic in recent years. In this study, I investigated the ability of green roofs to support urban biodiversity by conducting a literature review, and then I sought the criteria for biodiversity roofs under Finnish conditions by interviewing ecologists. My research questions in this study were 1) What kinds of habitats could be “ideal ecosystems” to be mimicked on biodiversity roofs in Finland; 2) which plant species could exist on roofs and whether they contribute to biodiversity; 3) what kinds of substrates support the biodiversity on roofs; 4) whether green roofs support faunal diversity and what faunal taxa could exist on roofs; 5) if and how roof structural characteristics influence roof biodiversity; 6) what kinds of management are practiced on biodiversity roofs; 7) what are people’s attitudes towards or perceptions of biodiversity roofs in general. -

Ba/ears, 36:45-56 ISSN 0212-260X. Palma de Mal/orca. In the spring 01 1987 and autumn 01 1990 the writer amassed a large databank on the Coleoptera of Mal/orca, as a result 01 intensive lieldwork. The particular concern of the author lies with the conservation and historical development 01 in vertebrate faunas, understanding 01 which is largely dependant on the exact taxo nomic knowledge 01 the specialist entomologist. The lindings presented herewith @ are significant in a number 01 ways. Not only do they underline the potential bilo gical richness 01 Mal/orca, but they also begin to portray the quality of the launa. Abstract: A list of 1595 species recorded from the area around Kétújfalu and Teklafalu (Baranya county, Hungary; 10×10km UTM grid codes: YL09 and YL19) is given. Twenty-eight protected species (including 3 species of community interest listed in the Habitats Directive) were found. Information about some rare rare species is added. Conservation measures of the area are proposed. Two species of Staphylinidae, Cilea exilis (Boheman, 1858) and Myrmecocephalus concinnus (Erichson, 1840) are new to the fauna of Hungary. Teklafalu kutatása 2004-tõl 2008-ig tartott, és néhány bogárcsalád esetében megkétszerezte a korábban közölt fajok számát. Kétújfalui és teklafalui adatok több más közleményben is találhatók (CSABAI & SÁR 2007, KUTASI & SÁR 2007, MERKL 2008, MERKL et al. 2006, SÁR 1993, 1995, SÁR P. 2005, VIG 2008). Fennica 17: 207–213. The phylogenetic relationships of Ildobates neboti Español (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Harpalinae) were investigated based on three nuclear genes (full 18S rRNA, and a fragment of each 28S rRNA and wingless). We compiled a data set using published sequences of 32 members of Harpalinae including one example each of Dryptini (genus Desera), Galeritini (Galerita) and Zuphiini (Thalpius), plus three Brachininae as outgroups. These three tribes form the “Dryptitae”, within which various relationships of Ildobates had been proposed. The analyses of the data matrix using parsimony (with equally weighted and reweighted char- acters) and Bayesian posterior probabilities all support the monophyly of the three tribes in “Dryptitae”, as well as a closest relationship of Ildobates with Thalpius to the exclusion of Desera plus Galerita. This confirms the previous in- clusion of Ildobates among the Zuphiini, and corroborates current taxonomic classifications based on morphological criteria. I. Based on the study of approximately 400 specimens, we give an overview of the systematics and taxonomy, distribution, dispersal power, and habitat preferences of the carabids belonging to the tribes Anthiini, Helluonini, Dryptini, and Zuphiini in the southern Levant (Egypt: Sinai, Israel and Jordan). We provide identification keys for the members of the given taxa in this region. Eleven species of the Zuphi- itae sensu Ober & Maddison (2008) have previously been published from the southern Levant. -

This document is the final report of that survey. 1.2 Terrestrial Invertebrate Survey methodology 1.2.1 The minimum survey effort recommended by Brooks (Brooks, 1993. ‘Guidelines for invertebrate site surveys’. British Wildlife 4: 283-286) was taken as a basic requirement for the present survey. Daytime sampling of terrestrial invertebrate species was undertaken in all areas by direct observation, by sweep netting and by using a beating tray. In addition, a suction sampler was deployed and a number of pitfall and pan traps were set. 1.2.2 Sweep-netting. A stout hand-held net is moved vigorously through vegetation to dislodge resting insects. The technique may be used semi-quantitatively by timing the number of sweeps through vegetation of a similar type and counting selected groups of species. This technique is effective for many invertebrates, including several beetle families, most plant bug groups and a large number of other insects that live in vegetation of this type.
