THE HAMPSHIRE CRICKET SOCIETY Patrons: John Woodcock Shaun Udal James Tomlinson NEWSLETTER No. 371 – MARCH 2018 (2) Wednesday 28 March 2018 – Meeting The society extends a warm welcome to this evening’s speaker, Adrian Aymes, on his return to the Society. He first addressed members in September 2000, during his benefit year. ADRIAN NIGEL AYMES was born in Southampton on 4 June 1964, and attended Bellemoor School. He came late to first-class cricket. He joined the Hampshire staff when 21 years of age in 1986 but did not gain a regular place until he finally displaced Bob Parks some four years later. He gave notice of what was to follow on his first-class debut against Surrey at The Oval in 1987. With Hampshire in trouble, he battled to 58 not out. Subsequently, no player in the first-class game during the 1990s sold his wicket more dearly. He was undefeated in a high proportion of his innings, which spoke volumes for his technique, temperament and sheer cussedness. With Robin Smith, he became the beating heart and consciousness of the Hampshire batting. If he took root and dug in, Hampshire were generally assured of a competitive total. All of his eight centuries were made in adversity. Of all Hampshire’s wicket-keepers, only his successor, Nic Pothas, has a higher batting average. He was a passionately proud professional, and never gave less than his best. He was fortunate to keep wicket to two of the genuinely great bowlers in the history of the game. At the start of his career, he stood back to the incomparable Malcolm Marshall; latterly, he kept to the unique Shane Warne.

MEETINGS Wednesday 26 October 2016 – Meeting This evening’s speaker is Sean Ervine, Hampshire beneficiary in 2016, to whom the Society extends a very warm welcome. He celebrated his benefit season in style by scoring 1000 runs in a season for the first time: 1090 runs at the impressive average of 57.36. His aggregate would have been even higher had he not missed four matches through injury. He enjoyed a glorious end to the season. In the last four Championship matches he struck 513 runs at the almost Bradmanesque average of 85.50. He began the sequence with a century in each innings (103 and 106) at Taunton, followed it with 80 against Yorkshire at The Ageas Bowl and then 158 at The Oval. He finished with 50 and 16 versus Durham at home. He had earlier made 123 Yorkshire at Headingley and 93 at Chester-le-Street. He has always been the most watchable of batsmen. He seemingly has time to spare and is a very clean striker of the ball, with shots all round the wicket.

  • 249 - November 2004
THE HAMPSHIRE CRICKET SOCIETY Patrons: John Woodcock Frank Bailey Colin lngleby-Mackenzie NEWSLETTER No. 249 - NOVEMBER 2004 KEITH MIILLER TRIBUTE Keith Miller, who died in October, was one of the game's immortals. The obituaries in the broadsheets and on the cricinfo. website paid fulsome tribute to his qualities both as a cricketer and a man, and it is not proposed to go through his career in any detail in this piece. However, he was indisputably the finest all-rounder in Australian cricket history and only ever bettered by Sir Garfield Sobers, and arguably Imran Khan. The true indicator of an all-rounder's quality is the differential between their batting and bowling averages. Of those who played for any time in Test cricket, Sobers (+23.75), Miller (+ 14) and Imran Khan (+14.88) stand head and shoulders above all others. Unlike the other two mentioned above, Keith Miller never captained his country in Test matches. He upset Sir Donald Bradman on a number of occasions early on in his career and was never forgiven. And yet no less a judge than Richie Benaud rated Miller as the best captain he ever played under. As with everywhere else he played, KEITH ROSS MILLER left an indelible mark on the Hampshire cricketing public, perhaps never more so than on his very first appearance on a Hampshire ground. Through the pen of John Arlott and the story telling of that incomparable raconteur, Arthur Holt, that event has passed into the County's folklore. It was during war time, in a charity match at Southampton's Parks.
