Two research questions and two null hypotheses were formulated for the study. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study was 1,078 lecturers out of which 245 lecturers were sampled. Challenges of the Realization of World-class University Questionnaire (CRSWUQ) constructed by the researchers were used for data collection for the study. Percentage was used to answer the research questions while Mann Whitney U-test was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed among others that: world class status of a university is simply about the international recognition of the university. A world class university has world class departments, diversified sources of income, sound financial base and always benchmarked with top universities world-wide. Lack of physical infrastructure which is obviously the most visible part of the university, the pressure of publish or perish culture which undermines the quality of research and absence of public financial support are some of the challenges that could hinder the world-class status of Kwara State University.

Department of Educational Management and Counseling, Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, Nigeria * [email protected] Received 26 April 2020 Revised 15 May 2020 Accepted 20 May 2020 Abstract: Internal Quality Management (IQM) is a process of enhancing and ensuring quality teaching- learning, research, and community service in the university system to attain quality graduates and satisfied consumers. This study, therefore, compared the IQM strategies practised by the universities (private, state and federal) in Kwara State, Nigeria. A descriptive survey design of comparative type was used. The proportional stratified sampling technique was used to select 261 lecturers out of 2,306 academic staff. The research question was answered with the adoption of frequency, percentage, and mean ratings. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and t-test was adopted to test the research hypotheses at 0.05 significant level. Findings revealed that IQM strategies were moderate at 61.9 %. Also, a significant difference at the p < .05 was found in the IQM strategies among universities F (2, 223) = 27.62, p = .000. The study concluded that Universities are different in IQM strategies. It was recommended that the implementation of IQM strategies should be improved upon by the management of both private and public Universities in Kwara State in order to enhance the attainment of vision and mission statements.

The market-friendly reforms initiated under the Structural Adjustment Programmes (SAP), the deregulation policies, and the financial crisis of the states created an encouraging environment for the emergence of the private universities in Nigeria. The legislative measures initiated to establish private universities in Nigeria also helped the entry of cross-border education, which is offered mainly through private providers. At present the private sector is a fast expanding segment of university education in Nigeria, although it still constitutes a small share of enrolment in university education. The paper attempts to analyse the growth, expansion, justification and the challenges of private universities in Nigeria. Introduction In many African countries, the provision of University education by private institutions is a growing phenomenon when compared to other parts of the world; however, most African countries have been slow to expand the private sector in University education (Altbach, 1999). So also in Nigeria, the emergence of private universities as a business enterprise is an emerging phenomenon, a number of issues plague its development including legal status, quality assurance and the cost of service.

    The Information Manager Vol. 15(1&2) Assessment of Library Instruction and Library Literacy Skills of First Year Undergraduate Students of University of Benin, Nigeria Luke Obasuyi and Odion, Fredrick Abstract This study investigated the effectiveness and impact of library instruction (GST 111 – the use of library) course on library literacy skills of first year undergraduate students. The study adopted the descriptive survey research method and questionnaire was used as the research instrument. First year undergraduate students of the 2013/2014 academic session constituted the population of study. Simple random and total enumeration sampling methods were used to collect data from students in five out of twelve faculties in the university. Data were collected at the end of the first semester library instruction course. Data collected was subjected to frequency, percentage, mean and correlation analysis using SPSS 17.0. Results revealed that the library instruction was well perceived by the students as adequate and effective. The students’ library literacy skills were high irrespective of the students’ sex and faculty. Library instruction received positively influenced the students’ library literacy skills but students’ gender and secondary school attended did not despite the fact that majority of the students attended private secondary schools and they were exposed to the library before entering the university. It is therefore concluded that adequate and effective library instruction positively impact on library literacy skills of first year undergraduate students. Therefore, library instruction programme should be well structured and adequately delivered to achieve the desired result. This study examined the relationship between level of stress and students’ academic performance in Universities in Kwara State, Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. Proportional stratified random sampling was used to select 300 students for the study. A “Students’ Stress Level Questionnaire (SSLQ)” and “Students’ Academic Performance proforma (SAPP)” was used to collect data. The instruments were validated by experts in educational management and counselling and a test-re-test reliability procedure was used to determine their reliability. Descriptive statistics were used to answer the research questions while Pearson product-moment correlation statistic was used to test the research hypotheses stated. The findings were that a significant relationship exists between the stress level and academic performance of the students. There is also a significant relationship between level of personal stress, interpersonal stress, environmental stress, achievement stress and academic performance. Therefore, it was recommended that the universities organize stress management seminars and workshops in collaboration with the Counselling and Human Development department. It is also recommended that university administrators make the learning environment conducive to boost academic performance and reduce stress.
