Your work has been recognized by several agencies. You are a member of the Royal Society of Canada, I believe you also have won an award from this Society for the excellence of your work. You have received two honorific doctorates, one from the University Ottawa, one from the University Concordia. You are the first woman to have received an award, a scientific award from the French Canadian Association for the Advancement of Science. You are a member, an officer of the Order of Canada. You are an officer of the National Order of Quebec. You have a long list of awards which I won’t specify in detail today but this is, I think this is a testimony to the excellence of your work in the field of child development. Before we talk about your research experience could you please tell us about your background? I’d like to start with your family history. I know you were born and raised in Montreal and you come from a very well known family. Your grandfather, if I am not mistaken was Premier of Quebec and well I think it would be important for our readers to know more about your own parents, their education, their occupation and how this might have influenced your own career. -

A Last-Year Student Awarded a Major National Grant
Press Release For immediate publication A last-year student awarded a major national grant Montréal, September 30, 2016 — L’École supérieure de ballet du Québec is proud to announce that Étienne Gagnon-Delorme, a senior in its professional program, is the recipient of the Hnatyshyn Foundation’s grant for Dance. This $10,000 grant was awarded by a jury consisting of experts from Canada’s arts community. Established by the late Right Honourable Ramon John Hnatyshyn, the twenty-fourth Governor-General of Canada, the Hnatyshyn Foundation invests in and supports, at the most fundamental level, “the development of world-class artists of tomorrow.” “Étienne is an extremely gifted dancer and we’ve had the pleasure of working with him on the discovery of his many talents,” stated Anik Bissonnette, Artistic Director of l’École supérieure de ballet du Québec. She went on to add: “This well-deserved grant is the result of several years of passion, sustained effort, and a peerless work ethic. We are delighted that he has been recognized in this way by the Hnatyshyn Foundation.” Admitted to l’École supérieure’s professional dance program in 2013, Étienne has distinguished himself as both a performer and a choreographer. Last year, he joined the Grands Ballets Canadiens for the Nutcracker and, this fall, for Jean-Christophe Maillot’s Romeo & Juliet. About Anik Bissonnette As principal dancer of Montréal’s Grands Ballets Canadiens for close to 17 years, Anik Bissonnette distinguished herself both at home and abroad, receiving critical acclaim for her classical technique as well as her great musical sensibility. -

Traditional politico-constitutional histories were obsessed with tracing the steady growth of participatory democracy at the local level. In contrast, this study adopts a more critical perspective, documenting the manner in which local elites utilized municipal government to shape the development of the province's urban communities. Among the relevant issues examined are the incorporation of towns and cities, the regulation of the public market, the expansion of municipal services, the subsidization of i nterna1 improvement projects, and the struggle to preserve public order and morality. -

Wilson May 2019 Abstract The research for this paper was done as part of a sesquicentennial project on 150 Years of Canadian Engineering. Some of its material has also been presented orally. This paper covers briefly and selectively Canadian engineering events and achievements in four time periods: one up to the time of Confederation in 1867, and three others between then and 2017. Associated with the three later periods are corresponding economic/political/social timelines to help put the engineering in context. There are no comments in it on the quality of the design, construction/manufacture, origins and uses of the items listed. This paper took a whole lot longer than expected to research and write, so that it carries a date in 2019 rather than late in 2017, when the chronological material in it ends. There are no maps or photographs. -

MOUNTING: A GOLD ball at the top point of the upper arm of the star has a small GOLD ring attached. Passing through that ring is a larger elongated GOLD ring through which the ribbon passes. -

The cover engraving made in 1836, is based on a sketch by James Dennis (1796-1855) who was the senior British officer of the small force at Queenston when the Americans first landed. The war of 1812 between Great Britain and the United States offers several examples of the effects of geology and landscape on military strategy in Southern Ontario. In short, Canada’s survival hinged on keeping high ground in the face of invading American forces. The mouth of the Niagara Gorge was of strategic value during the war to both the British and Americans as it was the start of overland portages from the Niagara River southwards around Niagara Falls to Lake Erie. Whoever controlled this part of the Niagara River could dictate events along the entire Niagara Peninsula. With Britain distracted by the war against Napoleon in Europe, the Americans thought they could take Canada by a series of cross-border strikes aimed at Montreal, Kingston and the Niagara River. At Queenston Heights, the Niagara Escarpment is about 100 m high and looks north over the flat floor of glacial Lake Iroquois. To the east it commands a fine view over the Niagara Gorge and river. Queenston is a small community perched just below the crest of the escarpment on a small bench created by the outcrop of the Whirlpool Sandstone. -

THE QUEBEC BRIDGE AND RAILWAY COMPANY INCORPORATED: June 23, 1887 - Dominion Act 50 - 51 Victoria, Chapter 98. July 10, 1903 - Dominion Act 3 Edward VII, Chapter 177, name changed (see History). DECLARATORY: Undertaking declared to be a work for the general advantage of Canada - Dominion Act 3 Edward VII, Chapter 177, July 10, 1903. HISTORY: Under Province of Canada Act 16 Victoria, Chapter 132, May 23, 1853, "The Quebec Bridge Company" was incorporated to build a bridge across the River St. Lawrence at or above the City of Quebec. Under Dominion Act 47 Victoria, Chapter 78, April 19, 1884, "The Quebec Railway Bridge Company" was incorporated to build a bridge across the River St. Lawrence with provision for vehicular and pedestrian traffic, etc. Under Dominion Act 50 - 51 Victoria, Chapter 98, June 23, 1887 "The Quebec Bridge Company" was incorporated to construct a bridge for railway, vehicular and pedestrian traffic across the St. Lawrence River at or near Quebec. Under Dominion Act, 3 Edward VII, Chapter 177, July 10, 1903, the name was changed to "The Quebec Bridge and Railway Company". Under Dominion Act 3 Edward VII, Chapter 54, October 24, 1903, provision was made for further financial arrangements to assist in completion of the undertaking. At this time the substructure and approaches had been completed and a portion of the superstructure had been constructed. Subsidies of $374,353, $250,000 and $300,000 to aid in construction had been paid to the Company by the Dominion Government, the Province of Quebec, and the City of Quebec respectively. The Company had so far expended $914,862 upon the works. -

Canadian Engineering History: A Thumbnail Sketch by Andrew H. (Drew) Wilson, FCAE May 2020 Prepared at the request of the President of the Canadian Academy of Engineering Preamble Engineering can be, and has been, defined in a variety of ways. A very early definition was that it is “the art of directing the great source of power in Nature for the use and convenience of people.” Nowadays, it has to be considered as an informed activity performed by purpose-trained practitioners in regard to the design, production and maintenance of machinery, constructions, processes and devices that is being augmented constantly by experience, research, and information that extends beyond science and technology and requires some understanding of economics and business, the law, the social sciences, and politics, as well as an appreciation of the past as well as the future. This paper has been written especially for students of engineering, to introduce them to some of the past events and achievements in engineering activity in Canada. The text is relatively short and makes use of information that has already appeared in other, longer stories of Canadian engineering. For the purposes of this paper, however, some of Newfoundland and Labrador’s engineering achievements prior to 1949 have been included. The illustrations are also few in number, but a bibliography has been appended to encourage further reading. To provide some background to the events and achievements, some economic, social and political information has been included. To help accommodate its ‘thumbnail’ description, this paper omits specific references to Canadian achievements abroad, to engineering in the Armed Forces, and to some of the companies with obvious engineering connections.
