This dissertation analyzes the dynamics of local government in six communities Brockville, Hamilton, Kingston, Ottawa, St. Catharines and Toronto. Traditional politico-constitutional histories were obsessed with tracing the steady growth of participatory democracy at the local level. In contrast, this study adopts a more critical perspective, documenting the manner in which local elites utilized municipal government to shape the development of the province's urban communities. Among the relevant issues examined are the incorporation of towns and cities, the regulation of the public market, the expansion of municipal services, the subsidization of i nterna1 improvement projects, and the struggle to preserve public order and morality.

  • NIAGARA ROCKS, BUILDING STONE, HISTORY and WINE
NIAGARA ROCKS, BUILDING STONE, HISTORY and WINE Gerard V. Middleton, Nick Eyles, Nina Chapple, and Robert Watson American Geophysical Union and Geological Association of Canada Field Trip A3: Guidebook May 23, 2009 Cover: The Battle of Queenston Heights, 13 October, 1812 (Library and Archives Canada, C-000276). The cover engraving made in 1836, is based on a sketch by James Dennis (1796-1855) who was the senior British officer of the small force at Queenston when the Americans first landed. The war of 1812 between Great Britain and the United States offers several examples of the effects of geology and landscape on military strategy in Southern Ontario. In short, Canada’s survival hinged on keeping high ground in the face of invading American forces. The mouth of the Niagara Gorge was of strategic value during the war to both the British and Americans as it was the start of overland portages from the Niagara River southwards around Niagara Falls to Lake Erie. Whoever controlled this part of the Niagara River could dictate events along the entire Niagara Peninsula. With Britain distracted by the war against Napoleon in Europe, the Americans thought they could take Canada by a series of cross-border strikes aimed at Montreal, Kingston and the Niagara River. At Queenston Heights, the Niagara Escarpment is about 100 m high and looks north over the flat floor of glacial Lake Iroquois. To the east it commands a fine view over the Niagara Gorge and river. Queenston is a small community perched just below the crest of the escarpment on a small bench created by the outcrop of the Whirlpool Sandstone.

Wilson April 2019 Abstract The research for this paper was done as part of a sesquicentennial project on 150 Years of Canadian Engineering. For those included, their ‘remembrance’ either has been generally recognised among the members of the profession or has been the subject of judgement on my part (and may or may not be shared). It is important to remember that Canada’s early engineers were mostly civils, that many were immigrants, and that the profession has been male-dominated, although this dominance has been slowly diminishing over the past several decades. About the Series Principally, the Cedargrove Series is intended to preserve some of the research, writings and oral presentations that the author has completed over the past half-century or so but has not yet published. It is, therefore, the modern-day variant of the privately-published books and pamphlets written by his forebears, such as his paternal grandfather and grandmother and his grandfather’s brother John.

  • Inscriptions and Graves Niagara Peninsula
"Ducit Amor Patriae" INSCRIPTIONS AND GRAVES IN THE NIAGARA PENINSULA JANET CARNOCHAN NIAGARA HISTORICAL SOCIETY RE-PRINT OF NUMBER 19 WITH ADDITIONS AND CORRECTIONS PRICE 60 CENTS THE NIAGARA ADVANCE PRINT, NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE FOREWARD In response to many requests for this popular publications, which was the outcome of many toilsome journeys, and much research on the part of the late Miss Janet Carnochan, the Society at length presents it with corrections and additions in the hope that it will be more valued than ever. Note: No. 19 is a Reprint of No. 10 with Additions and Corrections. PREFACE In studying the history of Niagara and vicinity the graveyards have been found a fruitful source of information, and over fifty of these have been personally visited. The original plan was to copy records of early settlers, United Empire Loyalists, Military or Naval Heroes, or those who have helped forward the progress of the country as Clergy, Teachers, Legislators, Agriculturists, etc., besides this, any odd or quaint inscriptions. No doubt many interesting and important inscriptions have been omitted, but the limits of our usual publication have already been far exceeded and these remain for another hand to gather. To follow the original lettering was desired, but the additional cost would have been beyond our modest means. Hearty thanks are here returned for help given by Col. Cruikshank, Rev. Canon Bull, Dr. McCollum, Mr. George Shaw, Rev. A. Sherk, Miss Forbes, Miss Shaw and Miss Brown, who all sent inscriptions from their own vicinity. It is hoped that the index of nearly six hundred names will be found of use and that our tenth publication will receive as kind a welcome as have the other pamphlets sent out by our Society.

Limited editions meant that these popular publications were soon out of print. Since then, these books have been con- sulted by generations of Canadians. They have been used by heritage organizations, university students and avid appreciators of Canada’s diverse architectural history. The books were soon unavailable for purchase, how- ever with the advent of new technology, Parks Canada has updated these publications and are now available in electronic format. These studies provide useful information and analysis for anyone interested in the field of Canadian architec- ture and perhaps will add to the general awareness and appreciation of this important part of Canada's heri- tage.
