Theodore Peña, Chair This dissertation examines the evidence for burial in archaic Rome and Latium with a view to understanding the nature of urban development in the region. In particular, I focus on identifying those social and political institutions that governed relations between city‐ states at a time when Rome was becoming the most influential urban center in the area. I examine the evidence for burial gathered primarily from the past four decades or so of archaeological excavation in order to present first, a systematic account of the data and second, an analysis of these materials. I reveal that a high degree of variation was observed in funerary ritual across sites, and suggest that this points to a complex system of regional networks that allowed for the widespread travel of people and ideas. I view this as evidence for the openness of archaic societies in Latium, whereby people and groups seem to have moved across regions with what seems to have been a fair degree of mobility.

In these areas, groundwater and water table dynamics during intense rainfall events can be an important component of flooding and inundation, leading to groundwater flooding. Thus, the commonly employed hydrological models based on only the surface component of flow may result in a poor estimation of the extension and persistence of inundation events. We introduce here a simple and parsimonious approach for handling the groundwater contribution to flooding in such areas, which can be easily implemented and introduced into surface hydraulic models for flood management and the delineation of inundation maps. The approach involves few relevant parameters, requiring a minimum of information regarding the hydrogeological setup. The method is exemplified through the flood analysis of a wide reclamation area located in the southern part of Rome, Italy. The introduction of the groundwater component could explain the large water volumes pumped by the stations, which are much larger than excess rainfall. The application confirmed the validity of the proposed approach, emphasizing the important role played by groundwater to flooding in areas similar to the one considered here.

The area lies between the sea, the Tiber and Ostia and is of great interest. In the Roman period, it was residential, populated by aristocratic villas and rural settlements. The recent research is the continuation of excavations in the area begun by the Soprintendenza in the 1980s. The two campaigns offered an important opportunity to review the data from the sites and the materials of Dragoncello, and have resulted in new insights into the area’s redevelopment. During the 2016 campaign, excavations were carried out on the villa’s peristyle, in the northwest sector (A) and, simultane- ously, at the southern edge (B). In Sector A, wall structures of various types were identified. These can be attributed to five different rooms (V, W, X, Y, Z), and at least four moments in life (from the end of the 2nd century B.C. to the beginning of the 3rd century A.D.). The 2017 expedition concentrated on structures located north of the peristyle. Inside rooms X, Y and T, a necropolis came to light, consisting of five tombs. At the same time, room V was excavated. Here a wide, rectangular structure was discov- ered, one that is very interesting: it is subdivided into small cells, arranged in rows of twelve along the two longer sides.
