MAREK NEKULA The Divided City: Prague’s Public Space and Franz Kafka’s Readings of Prague It is no surprise that the monuments on Prague’s squares, riverbanks, and hills reflect the national ideologies from which they emanated. In the nineteenth century, when the first memorial monuments were founded, middle-class civic society used them to present and pass on its values to viewers in public space, viewers who themselves may have been nationally indifferent. In nineteenth-century Prague, these values were above all national in character: for the Czech and German mid- dle classes, language-based nationalism dominated all other values; it determined the political programs of most Czech and German political parties, as well as more private choices, such as where parents sent their children to schools. Czech middle-class nationalists demanded that the Czech language and Czech people be given equal standing with the Germans, while German middle-class nationalists wanted to maintain the status quo. Both groups were becoming more and more interested in creating linguistically distinct spaces that would be dominated by the language and symbols of Czech and German nationalism. In Prague, public space became the staging ground for national discourse, where adherents of monolingual national ideologies competed with one another and attempted to control public opinion in various ways, including the domina- tion of public space. One of the ways to control and speak to the public was to properly stage ceremonial acts, for example the funerals of Václav Hanka, Karel Havlíček Borovský and Božena Němcová or the laying of the first stone of the Czech National Theater. -

Přednášky z roku 1898 As Berlin correspondent for the Frankfurter Zeitung in 1924, the Aus- trian novelist and journalist Joseph Roth (1894–1939) wrote an am- bivalent hymn to modern technology entitled Bekenntnis zum Gleisdreieck (Affirmation of the Triangular Railway Junction). In the form of a religious creed, he invoked the railway junction as the centre of the modern world: I affirm the triangular railway junction. It is an emblem and a focus, a living organism and the fantastic product of a futuristic force. It is a center. All the vital energies of its locus begin and end here, in the same way that the heart is both the point of departure and the des- tination of the blood as it flows through the body’s veins and arteries. It’s the heart of a world whose life is belt drive and clockwork, piston rhythm and siren scream. It is the heart of the world, which spins on its axis a thousand times faster than the alternation of day and night would have us believe; whose continuous and never-ending rotation looks like madness and is the product of mathematical calculation; whose dizzy- ing velocity makes backward-looking sentimentalists fear the ruthless extermination of inner forces and healing balance but actually engen- ders healing warmth and the benediction of movement. Roth’s notion of the railway combined biological and mechanical im- ages. He described the junction as a living being, even the heart of the world. -

Famous Alumni & Former Staff Jan Czech philosopher, one of the last students of Edmund Husserl and Patočka (1907–1977) Martin Heidegger Patočka studied at the Faculty of Arts in Prague, in Paris, Berlin and Freiburg. He was one of the last students of Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger. One of his tutors was also Eugen Fink and the two became lifelong friends. In 1968, he was appointed professor at Charles University, but for political reasons, he was only allowed to lecture in 1945-1950 and 1968-72 and otherwise taught private, illegal seminars at home. He was involved in the creation of Charta 77 and together with Jiří Hájek and Václav Havel was one of its first speakers. He died in hospital after a demanding interrogation by the communist police over his involvement with Charta. Academically, Patočka focused on philosophy of history, phenomenology, and on the works of the seventeenth-century Czech educator, philosopher, and writer Jan Amos Komenský. Růžena Vacková Art historian, archaeologist, and political prisoner (1901–1982) Růžena Vacková studied classical archaeology, aesthetics, and art history at the Faculty of Arts. During WWII, members of her family were executed by the Nazi authorities, and she herself was imprisoned towards the end of the war and sentenced to death, but the sentence was not carried out. In 1947, she was appointed Special Professor of classical archaeology at the Faculty of Arts, as the second woman to ever achieve this rank in the Czech academia, after the historian and Byzantologist Dr Milada Paulová. In February 1948, Růžena Vacková was the only member of the staff who joined the students’ manifestation against the communist putsch. -

Since the nineteenth century, Central Europe has been undergoing rapid changes in the political, social and cultural spheres, which was reflected in the self-definition of the nations living in this region, and in their definition by others. The Czech people, who until 1918 were a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, gave birth to a national revival movement in the nineteenth century and eventually emancipated themselves to create an independent Czechoslovakia. The idea of „national identity“ was, therefore, crucial and this was enhanced in many areas of human activity, including the construction of a historical legitimacy for the nation. The struggle for recognition of the historical existence of the Czech nation was also projected into the discourse adopted for historical and contemporary art writing and exhibition practice. In this thesis, I focus on the ways in which Czech national identity was constructed in the historiography of art. I shall argue that the various ideologies which influenced the writers led to an understanding of Czech art as epitomising certain qualities of the Czech nation. At the same time, the Czech nation was presented as highly advanced because of its artistic achievements. -

Milan Hodza and Federation in Central and Eastern Europe. MICHAL MÛDRY-SEBÎK When, at the start of this century, Milan Hodza entered public life, rela- tions among the nationalities in Austria-Hungary were at the peak of tension. The old Emperor Francis Joseph was neither wise nor able enough to create harmony in the conglomeration of nationalities in his empire. Let us just recall what nationalities lived in the monarchy: Czechs, Slovaks, Poles, Serbians, Croatians, Slovenes, Ruthenians, Ukrainians, Romanians, Italians, Germans, and Magyars. The ruling element in Austria-proper were the Germans, and in Hungary the Magyars - although in comparison with the non-German and non- Magyar nationalities they were minorities. The Magyars were ob- sessed with the idea of magyarizing the whole non-Magyar majority. They applied such pressures, particularly on the Slovaks, that only the victory of the Allies in World War I rescued them from extinction.1 Milan Hodza, true to the traditions of his forefathers, could not stand idly by.8 As soon as he entered the University of Budapest in 1896, he started to fight to change these conditions. Even as a young student, he understood that the situation could be improved only by introducing universal suffrage, that is, by giving voting rights to the common people, particularly the peasants - by awakening the non-Magyar nationalities from their lethargy, and leading them to close cooperation.
