The nerve centre of neo-liberal ideology is managerialism, represented by the principle of freedom of choice. This principle, in turn, is grounded in “the idea of the “psychological’ subject endowed with propensities he or she tries to realize” (Žižek, 2008:11). To this end, this ideology concludes that all individuals find engaging in relationships with other individuals rationally useful, and that these relationships form a complex system of exchanges that make up the basis of society. This liquid society (Bauman, 2002) dissolves Fordist Workerism’s personal, collective, and political identity and replaces it with “the new spirit of capitalism” (Boltanski & Chiapello, 2002), which prescribes what the new subjectivities committed to creativity and innovation must be like. It is regarded as a mechanism in the hands of rational, informed citizens who try to maximise its use and who, in their search for greater efficiency, have lost faith in public services, unless “they are under the supervision of private companies” (Crouch, 2004: 67) or the cultural values of economic corporations (Parker, 2015). These are based on “spontaneous orders of cooperation” (Hayek, 1985), which are amoral (Comte-Sponville, 2004), and therefore rarely generate dissent, resistance or rebellion due to the strategy of presenting the obligation to choose as freedom of choice (Bauman, 2017), and an example of human rationality. Neo-liberalism, which has triggered countless structural changes, is not simply an ideology that aims to transform the social state in order to guarantee that the market functions smoothly; it is also a technology of power. In this regard, Foucault (2008) discussed the ability of states and governments to have a certain influence on 7 Ignasi Brunet, Alejandro Pizzi & David Moral behaviours and obtain more or less constant obedience (Gago, 2015: 221). To this end, states need to construct and take part in a global market. This was pointed out by Lordon (2012: 31–32), who believes that states, on their own initiative, “freely and deliberately organise an institutional system which deprives them of their sovereignty. They are clearly and willingly creating a situation that makes capital markets dependent (by deregulating them, but also by preventing all other ways of financing deficits) and submits economic policies to their free judgement, since markets are deliberately set up as means of vigilance and normalisation.” Current disorganised capitalism (Lash & Urry, 1987) consists of “business states” (Hedges,

    This page intentionally left blank ii ii The Splintering of Spain This book explores the ideas and culture surrounding the cataclysmic civil war that engulfed Spain from 1936 to 1939. It features specially commissioned articles from leading historians in Spain, Britain and the USA which examine the complex interaction of national and local factors, contributing to the shape and course of the war. They argue that the ‘splintering of Spain’ resulted from the myriad cultural clea- vages of society in the 1930s. Thus, this book views the civil war less as a single great conflict between two easily identifiable sets of ideas, social classes or ways of life, than historians have previously done. Introduction My first encounter with fellow citizens harassing and assaulting their neighbors was on my return from working fifteen years in the Philippines in 2007. I was not in the country during the attacks by extremists’ in New York City and the great anxieties in trying to understand what happened, and what it all means moving forward for our communities and as a nation. In a predictable fashion, it veered toward who to blame for extremist ferment, and local Muslim communities became the object of investigation, intimidation, and assaults of many different types. Our rhetoric for religious tolerance and acceptance has its conditions, and in all honesty, the United States has never sat easy with its cultural and religious diversity.

It was noted but not well explored by contemporaries and historians that these enemies were similar in their hostility towards modernization and in their intense idealism. This thesis compares the two movements in order to determine the nature of their commonality and what this suggests about ideological enemies. A range of sources were consulted, including scholarship on modern Spain, biographical information on individuals who converted from Carlism to anarchism and contemporary print media. It was concluded that they were produced by the same destabilizing processes of disentailment and industrialization, which drew the working classes towards proposals that would have otherwise seemed implausibly utopian. The thesis further suggests that they were uniquely idealistic, in that they put moral integrity before the success of their cause. In this paper I present briefly the following two forms: religion as a cleavage line of groups in ethno-religious confrontations: struggles between Catholics, Orthodox and Muslims in the Balkans; of Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland; of Sunni and Shia and Iraq; of Buddhists and Hindus in Sri Lanka; of Muslims and Catholics in Indonesia; and religion as a mechanism for legitimizing power in the form of State Religions: National-Catholicism in Francoism, which is likely to generate the formation of the internal religious enemy. Keywords: Politics, Religion, Ethnic groups, Nation, Political conflicts Introduction Since the years of the French Revolution, the transfer of the group psychol- ogy to the nation culminated in an irreversible process of a religious nature. The concept of the nation acquired an emotional charge which allowed it to de- mand enormous sacrifices, including that of one’s own life, as religions do, when national sovereignty had to be defended against “the enemy”, either internal or external (Shafer, 1964). In fact, in modern societies the relation between religion and politics has not disappeared. An archaic Weberian mechanism of legitimation surviving in cur- rent states is that of sacralization. It consists of a fusion between the sacred and political power (even justice and the law in the West retain the imprint, in its language, symbols, form and rituals, etc.
