O'Casey's own life was full of incident, and the people he had associated with – Shaw, Yeats, Lady Gregory, and the men of Easter, 1916 – were in their different ways heroic. The work also struck me as a new type of writing, fiction-like in its narrative technique, but freer in movement, allowing easy transition from recollection to reflection and back again, in a prose that is remarkable for its mixture of parody, invective, lyricism and a kind of stream-of-consciousness reverie quite reminiscent of Joyce. [OCa1] 1985 Wang Zuoliang : Sean O'Casey. I found O'Casey's early Dublin tragi-comedies fascinating. I was also attracted by his later work, particularly The star turns red and Red roses for me. It was clear that from Within the gates on, O'Casey , the restless spirit that he was, was looking for a new, fresh way of writing significant drama. He didn't want to repeat his early successes, nor could he reconcile himself to the sort of fashionable, 'realistic' drama then being turned out by men like Noel Coward. Inevitably, he landed on poetic drama. He wanted to see in it all the richness, all the glitter and colour, of life, including man's noble fight for a better society. Also, he would write this kind of poetic drama in a resonant, sinewy prose, though he would not rule out – indeed he often resorted to – bursts of poetry at the critical moments. Centering around the activities and writings of Qi Rushan (1870-1962), who played a key role both in reshaping the modes of elite involvement in opera and in systematic knowledge production about opera, this dissertation explores this transformation from a transitional generation of theatrical connoisseurs and researchers in early twentieth-century China. It examines the many conditions and contexts in the making of opera—and especially Peking opera—as a discipline of modern humanistic research in China: the transnational emergence of Sinology, the vibrant urban entertainment market, the literary and material resources from the past, and the bodies and !ii identities of performers. This dissertation presents a critical chronology of the early history of drama study in modern China, beginning from the emerging terminology of genre to the theorization and the making of a formal academic discipline. Chapter One examines the genre-making of Peking Opera in three overlapping but not identical categories: temporal, geographical-political, and aesthetic.

Decades of what would become a century of humiliation had disabused the country of its previous self-perceived technological superiority, as famously expressed by Emperor Qianlong to the British envoy George Macartney in 1793. The Chinese had instead become convinced that they needed knowledge from outside to become strong enough to resist imperial aggression. No country encouraged this opening more than the United States. Americans threw money and expertise at the training of Chinese students and intellectuals. The Rockefeller Foundation’s first major overseas project was the creation of China’s finest medical college and other US institutions followed Rockefeller’s lead by establishing dozens of Chinese universities and technical schools to train a new generation of Chinese scientists.

    國立臺灣大學文學院歷史學系 學士班學生論文 Department of History, College of Liberal Arts National Taiwan University Bachelor Degree Thesis 鴉片危機中的商業轉機： 羅伯特‧賓奈特‧福貝斯與中美交流 Commercial Chances in the Crisis of Opium: Robert Bennet Forbes and Sino-American Communications 吳昌峻 Chang-Jiun Wu 指導教授：陳慧宏 博士 Hui-Hung Chen 中華民國 106 年 7 月 July 2017 誌謝 於大二下的暑假，因替牛道慧老師工作，受到許多提點，並認識到中美貿易 研究的重要性。此外，我亦向牛道慧老師借用了兩冊史料，此對於本研究有極大 的幫助。於 2016 年春夏之交，本篇論文已開始醞釀：我開始注意到福貝斯此人， 並思考其是否具有研究價值。但是，因為我沒有足夠的研究經驗，因此想要透過 修習學士論文的課程，以完成此篇中美交流論文。在尋找學士論文的指導老師時， 經由秦曼儀老師的引薦，找到了目前的指導老師－陳慧宏老師。在第一次見面及 討論題目之後，獲得了陳慧宏老師的許可，方才開始修習學士論文的課程。而本 篇論文之撰寫，亦由此正式展開。 陳慧宏老師對論文的細節相當重視，在數次的往返修改之後，我開始對論文 的寫作方法與格式，有較確切的認知。此外，陳慧宏老師亦鼓勵我參與「105 學年 學士班學士論文獎」的校內競賽，並在準備期間給予我很多建議與幫助。另外， 特別感謝陳熙遠老師於四月時參與論文審查，並提供許多論文修改的方向，使我 的論文可以更加精實。最終，此論文在「105 學年學士班學士論文獎」中取得校長 獎的名次。於獲獎後，又依循著兩位老師給我的指點，繼續修改論文。如今已近 畢業，此版論文經過多次的翻新。此論文的完成，象徵著我大學學習生涯的成果， 亦是象徵著下一個學習階段的開始。學海無涯，為勤是岸，共勉之。 最後，感謝我的家人及朋友給我的幫助與建議，若沒有他們的陪伴與相處、 不斷地交流與鼓勵，則此篇論文，將不可能如期完成。 ii 中文摘要 本論文是以美國商人羅伯特‧賓奈特‧福貝斯（1804-1889；以下簡稱福貝斯） 為中心，討論在中國鴉片危機時早期中美的商業交流。而福貝斯，正是於鴉片戰 爭前夕參與中國貿易的美國商人。福貝斯與中國的關係密切，自 1817 年 10 月 17 日乘著廣州貨運號（Canton Packet）首次向中國出航後，長年經營中美貿易。他曾 掌管過伶仃貿易站的走私貿易，又在鴉片危機變化多端的局面下，運用中、美、 英三方的多邊關係，成功地處理對華貿易。喜於寫作的他，為後世留下大量的史 料，可以做為研究中美早期交流的材料。 目前關於福貝斯的史料，已出版者包括 《個人回憶錄》（Personal Reminiscences; 2009）、《對中國與中國貿易的評論》 （Remarks on China and the China Trade; 1844）、《來自中國的信件》（Letters from China; 書寫於 1838-1840 年）。過去研究者很少從福貝斯這樣的個人觀點出發， 並以以上三件重要的個人資料入手，探討早期中美的商業關係。本研究希望可以 透過梳理這些史料，從福貝斯的角度，進入早期中美貿易與鴉片戰爭前後的歷史 中，用「以小觀大」的眼光，看這個時代的交流與變局。 本研究的問題意識如下：從福貝斯的生平，是否可以「以小觀大」，看到該 時代的商業背景以及中美商業往來的關係？此外，福貝斯與美國在華商人是如何 度過鴉片危機造成的貿易困境？美國、英國與中國在鴉片危機的當下，又存在著

    The China Sustainable Energy Program CHINA CLIPPINGS Issue 9 January-April 2001 The China Sustainable Energy Program (CSEP) is dedicated to public policy development in China aimed at cost-effective carbon emissions reductions through the deployment of energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies. The science of ongoing global warming is clear, as noted in our opening article. Experts still disagree, however, over the likely economic impacts of ongoing warming. This, however, is clear: many energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies are cost effective today, and these "no regrets" options should be promoted through public policies with all due haste. China assured the European Union of its commitment to the Kyoto Protocol and called the U.S. decision to not ratify the pact irresponsible. China is the second largest producer of carbon emissions behind the U.S., but it has reduced its carbon emissions in the last five years (p. 6). In the Electric Utilities sector, Chinese policy makers have scaled back plans to deregulate the power sector in response to the California energy crisis (p. 17). China expert and CSEP Policy Advisory Council member, Michel Oksenberg, passed away recently. Oksenberg helped pave the way to full diplomatic relations with China in the 1970’s (pg. 7).
