Well, not actually, but Ice on Whyte does feature some extremely impressive ice carving during the competition component, which features the work of such pros as Team Sakha from the Republic of Sakha in Russia; Ice Drop from Malaysia and Nepal; and our very own Scott & Steve, from Edmonton and Calgary. Try your hand at ice sculpting in an inflatable igloo, or sip craft beer and spirits at the Ice Bar; there are also such offsite activities as the Whiskey Stew Off at El Cortez (just across the street), and a Painting Party at Artelier Studios. S U P P L I E D Film Fest Filmmaker Charles Officer will be in attendance with his documentary Unarmed Verses during the Top Ten Film Festival, running until early February at the Metro Cinema. Established by the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) over a decade andahalf ago, the festival celebrates and promotes Canadian cinema, and raises awareness about our national achievements. Other films in the series include Threads & The Tesla World Light, Luk’ Luk’l, and Our People Will Be Healed. S U P P L I E D Nu:BC Heroes in the Seaweed and the Radius series are among the commissioned works you can expect to hear at the Saturday concert by Vancouver’s Nu:BC. The three piece unit of flutist Paolo Bortolussi, cellist Eric Wilson and pianist Corey Hamm are ensembleinresidence at the University of British Columbia, where they’ve worked with such performers as dancer and choreographer Emily Molnar, media artist Jamie Griffiths, and the BC Chinese Music Ensemble. The trio will be working with interactive, live electronics for this performance. Interactive activities, storytelling, plus a free book for the kids are just a few of the reasons why you should make your way over to the Robbins Learning Centre for this free event, which celebrates Family Literacy Day. S U P P L I E D Pro Coro Pieces by Veljo Tormis, Mendelssohn, and Swedish composer Folke Rabe are on the musical menu for Sunday’s vistel, vastel: male voices concert. The popular local choral group promises a humorous, lighthearted afternoon which will also feature an homage to songs of the ’80s. Extra special guest choir Axios Men’s Ensemble will be hooking up with Pro Coro for an afternoon of vocal collaboration. When: Sunday, Jan. 28 at 3 p.m..
