Beautiful printingBy SteplanderA beautiful collection that is printed on crisp clean paper, vibrant ink and a thick cover. The printing I received was of better quality than the typical Archie printing. My kid loves the recent historical collections.1 of 4 people found the following review helpful. very disappointingBy mary_clyneMy 9 year old grand daughter like this comic, but I remember comics digest having more pages and more stories about Archie. It was too thin for the price. needs to revised their pricing on certain items! Little Archie artist Bob Bolling is considered by many comic book collectors to be Archie Comics' equivalent of "the duck man," Carl Barks. It's easy to see why: his classic tales are epic in scope, as Little Archie deals with Martian invaders, secret spies, pirates, freewheeling uncles, gorillas on the loose and more! Who knew a little boy could have so many adventures? Now, some of the best and earliest LITTLE ARCHIE stories are compiled in this special volume collecting vintage LITTLE ARCHIE stories from 1961 through 1965.

  • Committee on Evaluation of Comic Books Collection
Mss. 126 COMMITTEE ON EVALUATION OF COMIC BOOKS COLLECTION Scope and Content: The Committee on Evaluation of Comic Books donated the comic book collection in the Rare Books & Special Collections Department of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. It contains the founder, Reverend Jesse Murrell’s, correspondence, lists and articles regarding the Committee on Evaluation of Comic Books. This committee was founded in Cincinnati in 1948 shortly after Reverend Murrell preached a scathing sermon regarding comic books in May. Reverend Jesse Murrell of Covington, Kentucky organized the Committee. Another founding member was Ernest Miller, then the associate director, later becoming the director of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. The bulk of the collection consists of over 500 comic books from 1948 to 1966 that were evaluated by the committee. In 1950 the committee’s evaluation list was published in the February and October issues of Parents’ Magazine. It was published in this magazine every year from 1950 to 1959. From 1948 to 1960 the committee produced the evaluation list at least once a year, sometimes twice. On May 21, 1970, Mr. Miller was appointed the archivist of the Committee and all materials were housed at the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, Main Library. The Committee on the Evaluation of Comic Books continued to meet until 1979. “Our major purpose is to help the people formulate critical judgment as to the comics, then we try to help them buy and read selectively.” Reverend Murrell died in 1972; as did Mr. Miller. It was Mrs.

Outside of snobby hold- outs like the New York Times, every newspaper worth its salt had a healthy representation of what parents liked to call “the funnies.” A handful of recent comic strips like Pogo, Peanuts, Dennis the Menace, and Marmaduke were even showing up in paperback collections on book racks. Sure, every small town has its secrets. But even those of us who’ve grown up here, who’ve lived our whole lives in Riverdale, are shocked at what’s being pulled from Pandora’s box. Trust me, I should know. Lately, I’ve realized that every- one I care about is tangled up in one Lynch-esque melodrama or another. Riverdale’s also a town of Rockwellian traditions: the midnight pancake banquet in late winter, frost lacing the town hall windows and vapor curling from our mouths when—if—we dare to step outside. Or the Riverdale High School Homecoming weekend, a network-TV-ready 1 Riverdale_DayBefore_Sampler_interior.indd 1 11/30/18 14:58 worship of the apex of Americana: football, dancing, and small-town pride. But my personal favorite—really, the only one that’s ever really meant anything to me—has to be the annual July fourth Summerfest carnival.

  • The Pureheart Age of Comics!
PART TWO OF FIVE The Pureheart Age of Comics! RECAP: With a costume inspired by Superman and a name that may have been taken from the Mighty Mouse Universe, Archie as Pureheart The Powerful made his debut in the October 1965 issue of "Life With Archie." In that story, the super-powered Pureheart character wasn’t supposed to be “real,” he was just regular Archie Andrews as he had imagined himself in a dream. But continuity in the Pureheart Universe was far from consistent. In another story, Archie became Pureheart by calling on the "PH Factor," which transformed him into a superhero and also wiped out all memories of his superheroic exploits. Not only did no one know that Archie was Pureheart -- no one even knew Pureheart existed at all! (At least, most of the time.) ARCHIE #117 ACTION #285, FEB 1962 B&V #118, OCT 1965 JUST IMAGINE! As it turned out, Mr. Andrews wasn’t the only superheroic dreamer in Riverdale. To say the least! Over in the Cooper household, young Betty Cooper -- she of the eternal crush on Archie -- was ALSO having heroic fantasies. But unlike Archie's boyish dreams of power and glory, Betty's superheroic fantasies evidenced a far more feminine perspective. While Archie as Pureheart wanted to save the world -- Betty, as usual, just wanted to save Archie! Virtually nothing in the Pureheart Universe was an original creation. "Super Betty" was obviously based on Supergirl (pictured above center), and she also shares her name with a fan magazine (left). But get this -- I, Robby Reed, creator of this blog and author of this article, believe that the title of Super Teen's first story was inspired by, of all things, an ad campaign! Not just any ad campaign, of course, but the famous “Just Imagine!” series of ads promoting DC’s Justice League of America (pictured right).

Abstract: A collection of materials about Bob Montana (1920-1975), the creator of Archie comics. Biographical Sketch Robert William Montana was born on 23 October 1920, in Stockton, California, to Ray Montana (1876-1935) and Roberta Pandolfini (1898-1975). Ray performed banjo on the vaudeville circuit and, as a result, Bob Montana traveled extensively as a child. As a young teenager, he lived in Boston's Theater District. The family spent summers in Meredith, New Hampshire, where his father owned a farm and ran a restaurant. After his father's death and his mother's remarriage, his family moved to Haverhill, Massachusetts, his stepfather managing a theatrical costume shop in Bradford. He attended Haverhill High School from 1936-1939, where he kept a diary of news stories. He played on the track, football, and golf teams, in addition to captaining the fencing team. He was elected to class office and drew the cartoons in the yearbook Brown and Gold. The faculty and students of Haverhill High inspired the Archie Comic Strip that he would later develop. Before he completed his degree at Haverhill High School, his family moved to Manchester, New Hampshire, where he graduated from Central High School in 1940.
