THE MARTIAN CHILD [PG] Apparently the staff of RottenTomatoes.com are a bunch of fi lthy liars and listed this movie as coming out last week when I looked, and now they have shifted it to coming out this week. So, in the interest of being accurate (and lazy), I provide you with the exact same poorly construct- ed joke I gave you last week. John Cusack stars in this romantic drama alongside the lovely Amanda Peet. Cusack’s wife died recently, and, through a series of odd events, he ends up adopting a child with his good friend Peet. Q. A group of friends and I are living together in our own house just off-campus, but we are in a rural area with plenty of families with little kids. So, we are expecting a bit of a crowd of trick-or-treaters on Halloween. Unfortunately, I never went trick or treating as a kid, so I have no idea as to what they are expecting. Do you have any opinions on the best kind of candy to give out? I defi nitely want our house to be the best in the neighborhood. A. It is rather hard to believe that you never heard any of the stories about which houses were giving away the best or worst candy, even if you never went trick or treating yourself. Whoever could tell the best tale about their Halloween adventures earned elementary school bragging rights for the whole next year. Essentially, the best stories were (in the spirit of the holiday) horror stories about the worst houses. Dentists giving away toothbrushes, health nuts handing out granola bars and the unprepared tossing a handful of cereal in your pillowcase usually made the list. Unless you want that kind of infamy, don’t give out anything that isn’t actually considered candy. On the other end of the spectrum, try to get a variety pack of some kind to please the greater majority of picky, bratty children. Variety makes kids work harder to sort their loot at the end of the night and keeps the trading bargains interesting, and I’m not talking about multiple fl avors of blow-pops either. Avoid the blow-pops anyway, since a lot of parents won’t let their kids chew gum; avoid nuts if you are concerned about the Halloween fun of the allergic. Since you can’t give away money, which is probably the only thing that would really separate you from the rest of the neighborhood, what you want to give out is a good mix of the most hyper-activity-induc- ing, chocolaty, sugary, sweet, sour, bright colored, soft, crunchy, so-good-you-eat-too-much-and-puke-for-an-hour kind of candy you can fi nd.

Q. My boyfriend asked me what I thought about the idea of wearing some sort of couple costume for Halloween this year. I laughed in his face – and then I realized he was serious! I think the only way I will get him to forgive me is to do the couple costume with him when we go to parties, since he thinks they are cool. But I need to come up with some way that we won’t be gag-worthy and ridiculed by our friends forever. Is that even possible? A. Any time guys and girls try to coordinate outfi ts in some sort of costume theme, the goal is not really to have an equality of cleverness between them. The true purpose is for the women to be arm candy for the men, who are intended to dress as slutty as possible. Haven’t you ever received an invitation to a “CEOs and Offi ce Hos” or “GI Joes and Army Hos” party? Notice the repeated word. Halloween parties are essentially the same as any party, just with a broader theme of “(Anything You Want to be) and (Any Kind of) Hos.” Any couple costume that stays in this vein is acceptable as normal Halloween attire. If you want to be funny on top of doing the ‘and ho’ costume, reverse it. If you are doing Sonny and Cher, make him dress as Cher. A girl in a sexy football uniform is a good costume. A guy in a sexy cheerleader costume is hysterical, and will result in your boyfriend being teased for the next bit of forever, which is a great improvement for you on the ridicule you would receive for cutesy, matching costumes. Regardless of whether you go the traditional ho or cross-dressing ho route, just remember this one thing: nothing makes couple costumes nauseating faster than a nauseating couple that stands next to each other all night long.
