  • Biological Surveys at Hunsbury Hill Country Park 2018
FRIENDS OF WEST HUNSBURY PARKS BIOLOGICAL SURVEYS AT HUNSBURY HILL COUNTRY PARK 2018 Ryan Clark Northamptonshire Biodiversity Records Centre April 2019 Northamptonshire Biodiversity Records Centre Introduction Biological records tell us which species are present on sites and are essential in informing the conservation and management of wildlife. In 2018, the Northamptonshire Biodiversity Records Centre ran a number of events to encourage biological recording at Hunsbury Hill Fort as part of the Friends of West Hunsbury Park’s project, which is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Hunsbury Hill Country Park is designated as a Local Wildlife Site (LWS). There are approximately 700 Local Wildlife Sites in Northamptonshire. Local Wildlife Sites create a network of areas, which are important as refuges for wildlife or wildlife corridors. Hunsbury Hill Country Park was designated as a LWS in 1992 for its woodland flora and the variety of habitats that the site possesses. The site also has a Local Geological Site (LGS) which highlights the importance of this site for its geology as well as biodiversity. This will be surveyed by the local geological group in due course. Hunsbury Hill Country Park Local Wildlife Site Boundary 1 Northamptonshire Biodiversity Records Centre (NBRC) supports the recording, curation and sharing of quality verified environmental information for sound decision-making. We hold nearly a million biological records covering a variety of different species groups. Before the start of this project, we looked to see which species had been recorded at the site. We were surprised to find that the only records we have for the site have come from Local Wildlife Site Surveys, which assess the quality of the site and focus on vascular plants, with some casual observations of other species noted too.

Laštůvka, Z. Laštůvka Received: March 23, 2004 Abstract LAšTůVKA, A., LAšTůVKA, Z.: Stigmella stettinensis (Heinemann), an overlooked species of the Stigmella oxyacanthella-group (Lepidoptera, Nepticulidae) in Europe. Acta univ. agric. et silvic. Mendel. Brun., 2004, LII, No. 4, pp. 17-24 Stigmella stettinensis (Heinemann, 1871) is separated from a widely distributed Stigmella minuscule- lla (Herrich-Schäffer, 1855) – a miner of pear-tree. The two species differ in colouration, in number of antennal segments and in some genitalia structures. The caterpillar of Stigmella stettinensis mines also leaves of Pyrus spp. Important characters are figured, problems of nomenclature are discussed, neotypes of the both taxa are fixed. Stigmella, Pyrus, Europe During the study of the European taxa of the Stigmella stettinensis (Heinemann, 1871) Stigmella oxyacanthella-group, we observed distinctive differences in the structure of the male Nepticula stettinensis Heinemann, 1871: 210 genitalia between the individuals of what we believed to be Stigmella minusculella (Herrich-Schäffer, 1855). Material. Neotype ♂, Poland, Toruń – Wrzosy, Such differences were mentioned yet by Schoorl et 11.VII.1984, ex larva, J. Buszko lgt., coll. UMK Toruń. Other comparative material studied: 128 ♂♂, 136 ♀♀ al. (1985) and Johansson et al. (1989) who conside- from the following localities: Poland, Toruń – Wrzosy, red especially the size and the form of the interior 11.VII.1984, 1 ♂, ex larva, J. Buszko lgt., coll. The type material of 12 species of Bucculatrix Zeller, 1839 deposited in the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin is revised. B. imitatella Herrich-Schäffer, [1855], and B. jugicola Wocke, 1877, are sunk in synonymy of B. cristatella (Zeller, 1839). Two other synonyms have been established: B. alpina Frey, 1870 = B. leucanthemella Constant, 1895, syn. n.; B. infans Staudinger, 1880 = B. centaureae Deschka, 1973, syn. n. The male genitalia of the species are figured. Lectotypes have been designated for 5 species. Zusammenfassung. Es wird das Typenmaterial von 12 Arten der Gattung Bucculatrix Zeller, 1839 revidiert, die sich im Museum für Naturkunde Berlin befinden. SYSTEMATICS AND BIOLOGY OF THE ECTOEDEMIA (FOMORIA) VANNIFERA GROUP Hoare, R. J. B., 2000. Gondwanan Nepticulidae (Lepidoptera)? Systematics and biology of the Ectoedemia (Fomoria) vannifera (Meyrick) group. – Tijdschrift voor Entomologie 142 (1999): 299-316, figs. 1-39, table 1. [ISSN 0040-7496]. Published 22 March 2000. The Ectoedemia (Fomoria) vannifera species-group is reviewed. Three species are recognized from South Africa (E. vannifera (Meyrick), E. fuscata (Janse) and E. hobohmi (Janse)), one from central Asia (E. asiatica (Puplesis)), and one from India (E. glycystrota (Meyrick) comb. n., here redescribed); three new species are described and named from Australia (E. pelops sp. n., E. squamibunda sp. n., and E. hadronycha sp. n.). All species share a striking synapomorphy in the male genitalia: a pin-cushion-like lobe at the apex of the valva. Two of the Australian species and one of the South African species have been reared from larvae mining the leaves of Brassi- caceae sensu lato. A phylogeny of all currently recognized species is presented: this taken to- gether with known distribution suggests either that the group is very ancient and antedates the split between the African and Indian parts of Gondwana (ca. 120 million years ago), or that it has dispersed more recently and has been overlooked in large parts of its range. The previously known Vespina species are associated with plants from the Fagaceae family on the western coast of the USA and East Asia and with Sapindaceae (Aceraceae) in eastern Europe.

A. Yefremova & V. D. Kravchenko Abstract The article reports on the quantitative description of the food web structure of the community consisting of 65 species of Lepidoptera leaf miners reared from 34 plant species, as well as 107 species of parasitoid eulophid wasps (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae). The study was conducted in the forest-steppe zone of the Middle Volga in Russia over 13 years (2000-2012). Leaf miners have been found to be highly host plant-specific. Most of them are associated with only one or two plant species and therefore the number of links between trophic levels is 73, which is close to the total number of Lepidoptera species (linkage density is 1.12).

Until recently, deep-level phylogeny in Lepidoptera, the largest single ra- All rights reserved diation of plant-feeding insects, was very poorly understood. Over the past ∗ Corresponding author two decades, building on a preceding era of morphological cladistic stud- ies, molecular data have yielded robust initial estimates of relationships both within and among the ∼43 superfamilies, with unsolved problems now yield- ing to much larger data sets from high-throughput sequencing. Here we summarize progress on lepidopteran phylogeny since 1975, emphasizing the superfamily level, and discuss some resulting advances in our understanding of lepidopteran evolution.
