It was used by the Abbot of Westminster in a court case 1478 showing the River Colne, at Widows Cruise covert Eel caught and released back into TQ050875 (Percy K. History of Harefield in Middlesex through Maps). Denham Country Park water course The case was about disputed fishing rights for good trout and eel fishing, which the Summer 2016 Abbot won. A731 (1) HOL/00521/0006 In the 15th century a man-made diversion of the Colne (in the now Denham Country Park) was created to make the River Frays. This was the mill stream and channelled water power for the region to develop and run its mills in Uxbridge and downstream. When the Grand Junction Canal was developed in 1793 – 1800 sympathetic and inclusive water use for other users e.g. the millers was incorporated. Water flows between the river and canal at intervals along the route from the Chilterns to the London pound. A system of weirs and paddles were sited along the route. The reason for Denham Deep Lock (1798) is to raise the canal over the river Frays so that the waters were separated. Today Denham Deep Lock is a visitor attraction and cultural heritage asset on ADT countryside cruises. A731 (2) HOL/00521/0007 Exhibit 4.
