Scale For the purpose of this enquiry, homosexuality is defined as the disposition to seek sensory pleasure through bodily contact with persons of one's own sex in preference to contact with the other sex. There may well be other purposes for which this definition would be superficial and inadequate; but Greek culture differed from ours in its readiness to recognise the alternation of homosexual and heterosexual preferences in the same individual, its implicit denial that such alternation or coexistence created peculiar problems for the individual or for society, 1 its sympathetic response to the open expression of homosexual desire in words and behaviour, and its taste for the uninhibited treatment of homosexual subjects in literature and the visual arts. It therefore presents us with a mass of undisguised2 phenomena, and we have little occasion, in considering the work of any Greek writer, artist or philosopher, to construct arguments in favour of a diagnosis of latent or repressed homosexuality. How, when and why overt and unrepressed homosexuality became so conspicuous a feature of Greek life is an interesting subject for speculation, but we are sadly short of evidence, for there is no doubt that overt homosexuality was already widespread by the early part of the sixth century B.C. Analogies from other times and places and the identification of factors commol] to many dissimilar cultures have considerable suggestive· value but still leave many alternatives open; a further complication is that biologists, anthropologists and historians 1. The Greeks were aware (cf. p. 62) that individuals differ in their sexual preferences, but their language has no nouns corresponding to the English nouns 'a homosexual' and 'a heterosexual', since they assumed (cf. pp. 60f.) that (a) virtually everyone responds at different times both to homosexual and to heterosexual stimuli, and (b) virtually no male both penetrates other males and submits to penetration by other ma.les at the same stage of his life (cf. p. 87). That is not to say that nothing was concealed or suppressed (cf. p. 171 n.2), or that nothing was repressed in the individual consciousness. 2 I Problems~ Sources and Methods differ in their axiomatic beliefs about the vulnerability of sexual behaviour and sexual emotion to initially trivial changes of fashion. 3 Why the Athenians of the fourth century B.C. accepted homosexuality so readily and conformed so happily to the homosexual ethos is a question which can be answered instantly at a superficial level: they accepted it because it was acceptable to their fathers and uncles and grandfathers. The interesting and important question in resp,ect of the fourth century is: how did homosexuality really work? How was it integrated with heterosexuality, and how was the moral and aesthetic evaluation of good and bad homosexual behaviour related to the values of classical Greek society in general? The subject is richly documented, though it has one important deficiency: all Greek art, literature and archival material, with the exception of a little poetry surviving only in fragments and citations, was the work of males, and the evidence bearing upon female sexuality of any kind is exiguous by comparison with the superab<undant evidence for male homosexuality. 'Male' must therefore be understood with the words 'homosexual' and 'homosexuality' throughout this book, unless 'female' is specified. The evidence covers a long period of time and is of very many kinds; it includes, for example, primitive graffiti on the rocks of Thera, a wall-painting in a tomb at Paestum, scurrilous political jokes and slanders, Plato's formulation of an ideal philosophical education, and the products of ancient research into the institutions of Crete. Readers who do not know much about the Greeks and approach the subject of Greek homosexuality out of an interest in psychology or sociology- or out of ordinary· human curiosity about other people's sexual behaviour - may wish for brief guidance on the compartments into which it is both customary and useful to divide Greek history and on the salient differences between those compartments. The earliest extant words inscribed in the Greek alphabet are datable to the eighth century B.C.; it is probable that the earliest known Greek work of literature, Homer's Iliad, took shape in that same century; and the close of the century saw the beginnings of representation (as opposed to decoration) in the visual arts. It is therefore between 800 ·and 700 B.C. that the Greeks become articulate for us. 4 The lower terminus of the ancient Greek world is the sixth century A.D., in which the overt 3. Cf. D.J. In saying this I ignore the M ycenean documents, partly because they are not the sort of material from which we learn much about people's thoughts and feelings, but mainly because of the cultural discontinuity created by the half-millennium of illiteracy which separated the M ycenean world from the invention of the alphabet. Scale 3 expression of explicitly pagan thought and feeling was extinguished. In this period of one thousand three hundred years there are four critical moments. The first is the decisive defeat of the Persian attempt in 480 B.C. to bring the Greek mainland into the Persian Empire; this is the boundary between the 'archaic' and 'classical' periods. The second crisis is the latter half of the fourth century B.C., in which the Greek mainland and the Aegean islands became subordinated to the kingdom of Macedon, the Macedonian king Alexander conquered the Persian Empire, and Greek-speakers and Greek culture and institutions were thereby disseminated throughout the Middle East. The third crisis is the second century B.C., when increasing Roman intervention in the Balkans and the Aegean culminated in the incorporation of the Greek mainland into the Roman Empire as a province ( 146 B.C.). The last crisis was the progressive disintegration of the western half of the Roman Empire in the fourth and fifth centuries A.D., from which the Greek-speaking eastern half, with its capital at Byzantium (Constantinople), emerged as the enduring link between the ancient Greek world and later ages. In the archaic and classical periods the sovereign state was the city, often ludicrously small by modern standards but making its own laws, observing its own institutions and rituals and fighting wars or making treaties with its neighbours. Big cities drew many small cities into 'alliances' which were often empires rather than associations of equals; but imperial power of this kind ebbed and flowed, and it is vital to remember, whenever one is tempted to generalise about the Greeks, that in the archaic and classical periods the term 'the Greeks' covers hundreds of sovereign city-states, distributed throughout Greece, the Aegean and coastal areas of (mainly) Turkey, the Black Sea, Sicily and South Italy, constituting a linguistic and cultural continuum but nevertheless admitting of striking differences in political structure and social ideals.

Why bother, when it seems so obvious? Look at Aratus and Nicander, whose model was Hesiod, and nothing more need be said. Nonetheless, that will be my aim here. There have of course been many useful studies of classical didactic poetry,² some of which offer various classifications (see below); yet I have long felt that insufficient attention has been paid, both by the ancients themselves and by us today, to the development of the poems called didactic, although modern termi- nology and the ancients are not in complete agreement as to what constitutes a Bibliography at end. Some earlier poets did in fact write in more than one genre, but could have boasted of it only in particular terms, i.e., by specifying “I write poems of type X and Y,” as we see at the end of the Symposium 223d ὁμολογεῖναὐτοὺςτοῦαὐτοῦἀνδρὸςεἶναι κωμῳδίαν καὶ τραγῳδίαν ἐπίστασθαι ποιεῖν, καὶ τὸν τέχνῃ τραγῳδοποιὸν ὄντα <καὶ> κωμῳδοποιὸνεἶναι (“They agreed that the same man can know how to compose both comedy and tragedy, and that the skilled tragic poet is also a skilled writer of comedies”)—to which one can add that Plato has himself done this within this very dialogue, adding satyrography, as Bacon (1959) shows.

It juxtaposes close readings of the elegies of Tibullus, Propertius, and Ovid alongside contemporary theorizations of the female body found in Irigaray, Kristeva, and Grosz. By expanding critical focus to encompass all the women of elegy, this dissertation demonstrates a surprising ambivalence towards the female body in a genre that claims to celebrate female beauty, and offers a new view of elegy’s role within Roman conceptions of gender, sexuality, bodies, and empire. Chapter one offers a brief introduction to contemporary feminist theories of the body as well as an overview of critical literature on the elegiac body. Chapter two examines Lucretius’ diatribe against love, Horace Epodes 8 and 12, and the Augustan marital legislation as major background for elegy’s female body.

    11 EZRA POUND AND THE GREEK ANTHOLOGY H. K. Riikonen The last two decades before the First World War mark an interesting period in the history of the classical tradition. The writers of this generation had still received an education based on a solid learning of the classical languages and of classical literature. This is attested by their constant allusions to and quotations from Greek and Roman poetry. Classical allusions, however, were not mere testimonies to the mod - ernists’ education; indeed, such an education enabled them to interpret the culture of antiquity in fresh new ways and to use various aspects of the classical heritage for their artistic pur - poses. Due to new archaeological discoveries, they had access to material which was unknown to previous genera - tions and which changed the general conception of Greek and Roman culture, which had been based on Winckelmannian ideals. Arthur Evans’s excavations on Crete yielded new information for the use of the writers who were interested for instance in the story of Daedalus, the constructor of the labyrinth and of the wings used to escape the island. Evans, a former war correspondent, also efficiently communicated his discoveries, sending for instance reports and telegrams to The Times (Cottrell 87-88, 113-130). Needless to say, James Joyce Quaderni di Palazzo Serra 15 (2008): 181-194. 182 H. K. Riikonen was the most notable author to write about Daedalus, Icarus and the labyrinth; these in fact took on a new topicality through Evans’s archaeological work (Fortune 123-134; Hayman 33-54). Another important factor was the discovery of papyri in Hellenistic Egypt, bringing to light masses of new documents on the everyday life of the Greeks, but also fragments of ancient Greek poetry, especially poems by Sappho.

Pessoa left consideraBle marginalia in his copy of Paton’s translation, which indicate the poems he was particularly drawn to, mainly the epitaphic poems of the seventh Book of the Anthology. In imitating these poems, Pessoa was participating in a widespread Victorian and Edwardian practice, which a few Anglo-American modernists also continued.     Elegy with Epic Consequences: Elegiac Themes in Statius’ Thebaid A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy In the Department of Classics of the College of Arts and Sciences by Carina Moss B.A. Bucknell University April 2020 Committee Chairs: Lauren D. Ginsberg, Ph.D., Kathryn J. Gutzwiller, Ph.D. Abstract This dissertation examines the role of elegy in the Thebaid by Statius, from allusion at the level of words or phrases to broad thematic resonance. It argues that Statius attributes elegiac language and themes to characters throughout the epic, especially women. Statius thus activates certain women in the epic as disruptors, emphasizing the ideological conflict between the genres of Latin love elegy and epic poetry. While previous scholarship has emphasized the importance of Statius’ epic predecessors, or the prominence of tragic allusion in the plot, my dissertation centers the role of elegy in this epic. First, I argue that Statius relies on allusion to the genre of elegy to signal the true divine agent of the civil war at Thebes: Vulcan. Vulcan’s erotic jealousy over Venus’ affair with Mars leads him to create the Necklace of Harmonia. Imbued with elegiac resonance, the necklace comes to Argia with corrupted elegiac imagery. Statius characterizes Argia within the dynamic of the elegiac relicta puella and uses this framework to explain Argia’s gift of the necklace to Eriphyle and her advocacy for Argos’ involvement in the war. By observing the full weight of the elegiac imagery in these scenes, I show that Argia mistakenly causes the death of Polynices and the devastation at Thebes as the result of Vulcan’s elegiac curse.

On the other hand, we know a great deal about the last century of the Roman Republic, in which his short but intense life was spent, and about many of the public figures, both literary and political, whom he counted among his friends and enemies. Like Byron, whom in ways he resembled, he moved in fashionable circles, was radical without being constructively political, and wrote poetry that gives the overwhelming impression of being generated by the public aªairs, literary fashions, and aristocratic private scandals of the day. How far all these were fictionalized in his poetry we shall never know, but that they were pure invention is unlikely in the extreme: what need to make up stories when there was so much splendid material to hand? Obviously we can’t take what Catullus writes about Caesar or Mamurra at face value, any more than we can By- ron’s portraits of George III and Southey in “The Vision of Judgement,” or Dry- den’s of James II and the Duke of Buckingham in “Absalom and Achitophel.” Yet it would be hard to deny that in every case the poetic version contained more than a grain of truth.

    Chapter Three ANTHOLOGIES AND ANTHOLOGISTS Between c. 850 and 950 many Byzantine intellectuals, among them bril- liant scholars such as Leo the Philosopher, devoted themselves wholeheartedly to the study of ancient, late antique and contemporary poetry. These hundred years of Byzantine scholarship resulted in the compilation of two major anthologies: the Palatine Anthology (compiled shortly after 944) and the Anthologia Barberina (c. 919). The latter is a collection of Byzantine anacreon- tics and alphabets, which can be found in Barb. gr. 310 (see below, pp. 123– 128). The former is essentially a copy of an earlier anthology of epigrams put together by Constantine Cephalas at the end of the ninth century. The anthol- ogy of Cephalas is not preserved, but we can reconstruct its structure in broad outline with the help of various collections of epigrams that derive from it, either directly or indirectly. Of these collections the Palatine Anthology is by far the most important because it closely resembles the original anthology of Cephalas. The Palatine manuscript1 was written by six different scribes2. These six hands can be divided into two groups: B1, B2 and B3, and J, A1 and A2, respectively. Both groups of hands can be dated approximately to the second quarter of the tenth century: scribes B to c. 920–930, scribes J and A to c. 940– 9503. Also, the Alexandrian grammarians included Sappho in the canon of the nine 17 lyric poets (ibid: 340). It seems, however, that already in the 9th century A.D. the poems of Sappho 18 have been disappeared: around 1550, Jerome Cardan reports that Gregory of Nazianzus had 19 publicly destroyed Sappho's works, while at the end of the 16th century, Joseph Justus Scaliger 20 claims that her poems were burnt in Rome and Constantinople in 1073 by order of Pope Gregory 21 VII (Reynolds 2001: 81). Similar information is also recorded by other writers1. The aims of the project are not only linguistic, but also literary; indeed, what motivates the study is an overarching interest in understanding how specific dialect choices can enrich the meaning of the poem in which they appear. Scholars have only recently started to include dialect in their readings of individual epigrams, but no one has systematically studied the entire corpus. In order to more fully understand Hellenistic book epigram and its flourishing during a period of great social, cultural, and literary change, we must confront the genre’s use of dialect or otherwise miss out on an important component in this self-conscious genre’s production of poetic meaning. Following an introduction that sets out the interpretive framework for the dissertation and explores issues of dialect transmission in the manuscript tradition, the study falls into two parts, each comprising three chapters. In the first part, I attempt to situate dialect choice and mixture in its poetic and literary-critical contexts. In the first chapter, I investigate dialect usage in pre- Hellenistic Greek poetry, not including inscribed epigram, arguing that dialect mixture for poetic effect existed in Archaic and Classical poetry.
