PREFACE The purpose of this book is to present a complete collection, subject to certain definitions and exceptions which will be mentioned later, of all the best extant Greek Epigrams. Although many epigrams not given here have in different ways a special interest of their own, none, it is hoped, have been excluded which are of the first excellence in any style. But, while it would be easy to agree on three-fourths of the matter to be included in such a scope, perhaps hardly any two persons would be in exact accordance with regard to the rest; with many pieces which lie on the border line of excellence, the decision must be made on a balance of very slight considerations, and becomes in the end one rather of personal taste than of any fixed principle. Coulson, Advisor Benjamin Acosta-Hughes Tom Hawkins Copyright by Gabriel Fuchs 2013 ABSTRACT This study examines two facets of the reception of Ovid’s Tristia in the 16th century: its commentary tradition and its adaptation by Latin poets. It lays the groundwork for a more comprehensive study of the Renaissance reception of the Tristia by providing a scholarly platform where there was none before (particularly with regard to the unedited, unpublished commentary tradition), and offers literary case studies of poetic postscripts to Ovid’s Tristia in order to explore the wider impact of Ovid’s exilic imaginary in 16th-century Europe. After a brief introduction, the second chapter introduces the three major commentaries on the Tristia printed in the Renaissance: those of Bartolomaeus Merula (published 1499, Venice), Veit Amerbach (1549, Basel), and Hecules Ciofanus (1581, Antwerp) and analyzes their various contexts, styles, and approaches to the text. The third chapter shows the commentators at work, presenting a more focused look at how these commentators apply their differing methods to the same selection of the Tristia, namely Book 2. These two chapters combine to demonstrate how commentary on the Tristia developed over the course of the 16th century: it begins from an encyclopedic approach, becomes focused on rhetoric, and is later aimed at textual criticism, presenting a trajectory that ii becomes increasingly focused and philological. -

Canon before Canon, Literature before Literature: Thomas Pope Blount and the Scope of Early Modern Learning Kelsey Jackson Williams abstract Sir Thomas Pope Blount (1649–1697), an English essayist and country gentleman, published two major literary biobibliographies, Censura celebriorum authorum (1690) and De re poetica (1694). In this essay, Kelsey Jackson Williams discusses the texts within the genre of historia literaria and contemporary under- standings of literature. In doing so, he engages with current debates surrounding canon formation and the shifts in disciplinary boundaries that followed in the wake of the Battle of the Books. Early modern canons and definitions of “literature” dif- fered radically from their modern equivalents, and a close reading of Blount’s work offers a window onto this forgotten literary landscape. keywords: historia liter- aria; biobibliography; Battle of the Books; John Locke; development of literary canon john locke’s library has long been recognized as a site of extensive anno- tation, commonplacing, and organization.1 In particular, Locke interleaved Thomas Hyde’s 1674 catalogue of the Bodleian Library and, using his own system of shelf marks, re-created it as an inventory of his own collection.2 Less well known are Locke’s annotations in another product of late seventeenth-century scholarship, Thomas Pope Blount’s 1690 Censura celebriorum authorum.3 The Censura contains brief biographies 1. 11 EZRA POUND AND THE GREEK ANTHOLOGY H. K. Riikonen The last two decades before the First World War mark an interesting period in the history of the classical tradition. The writers of this generation had still received an education based on a solid learning of the classical languages and of classical literature. This is attested by their constant allusions to and quotations from Greek and Roman poetry. Classical allusions, however, were not mere testimonies to the mod - ernists’ education; indeed, such an education enabled them to interpret the culture of antiquity in fresh new ways and to use various aspects of the classical heritage for their artistic pur - poses. Due to new archaeological discoveries, they had access to material which was unknown to previous genera - tions and which changed the general conception of Greek and Roman culture, which had been based on Winckelmannian ideals. Arthur Evans’s excavations on Crete yielded new information for the use of the writers who were interested for instance in the story of Daedalus, the constructor of the labyrinth and of the wings used to escape the island. Evans, a former war correspondent, also efficiently communicated his discoveries, sending for instance reports and telegrams to The Times (Cottrell 87-88, 113-130). Riikonen was the most notable author to write about Daedalus, Icarus and the labyrinth; these in fact took on a new topicality through Evans’s archaeological work (Fortune 123-134; Hayman 33-54). Another important factor was the discovery of papyri in Hellenistic Egypt, bringing to light masses of new documents on the everyday life of the Greeks, but also fragments of ancient Greek poetry, especially poems by Sappho. -

BOOK TI CHRISTODORUS OF THEBES IN EGYPT This description of the bronze statues in the celebrated gymnasium called Zeuxippos, erected under Septimius Severus at Byzantium and destroyed by fire shortly after this was written (in 532 a.d. ), is of some value, as it gives at least a list of the statues and the names assigned to them. But owing to its bombastic style its value is of the slightest. The poet confines himself usually to mere rhetoric and tiresomely repeats his impression that the statues looked as if they were alive. Abstract The Greek Anthology, in the edition and translation of William Roger Paton, was the model for the genre, mood, title, and often the style of Fernando Pessoa’s Inscriptions (1921). Pessoa left consideraBle marginalia in his copy of Paton’s translation, which indicate the poems he was particularly drawn to, mainly the epitaphic poems of the seventh Book of the Anthology. In imitating these poems, Pessoa was participating in a widespread Victorian and Edwardian practice, which a few Anglo-American modernists also continued. Self-authorization and Strategies of Autography in John Tzetzes: The Logismoi Rediscovered Aglae Pizzone HEN IN 1948 CARL WENDEL wrote the Real- encyclopädie entry on John Tzetzes’ life and work (still the most comprehensive survey to date), he intro- W 1 duced a section devoted to the author’s “lost works.” The list included only three items: a paraphrasis of Ptolemy’s Geography, alluded to in the Historiai (11.396.884–997), an iambic poem on a representation of the sky in the palace of Chosroes, men- tioned in the same work (3.66.58–67), and the Logismoi, which are the focus of the present paper. Tzetzes mentions the Logismoi on several occasions through- out his works.2 The first reference is in the Commentary on Hermogenes, in the section devoted to the Περὶ µεθόδου δεινότη- τος.3 They are again explicitly recalled in the Historiai as well as 1 C.
