    Bengalis Thousand Years 8670/ 021116 The BengAlis: A ThousAnd YeArs Jawhar Sircar The last few days of a century that also happen to be at the end of a whole millennium, are bound to stir a strange excitement in even the most placid person. The two most expected feelings that hold their sway can perhaps be summarized as: introspection and expectation — drawing a balance sheet of the past as also trying to gauge what the future holds. Such an exercise can cover not only a single person or his immediate concerns; it may as well cover his locality, his state or nation and may be stretched to entire humanity. The constraints of my acquaintance and knowledge hardly qualify me to scan any group higher or bigger than my own people: the Bengalis. Even in this, my limitations now plague me more than my enthusiasm to try out such a review — but these notwithstanding; the sheer thrill of initiating an animated adda on the subject overpowers me. At the beginning, let me make it clear that I do not have the audacity to try to cover a thousand years in just a few pages: hence I will concentrate only on certain significant periods or issues, for the sake of presenting a viewpoint. So let us begin: are the Bengalis a thousand years old? Or even more? Historians tell us about our history during the Pala- Sena period, which would give us about 1250 years to be proud of, but if we include the great Sasanka, we could be share-holders in a great concern that goes back fourteen centuries.

  • Family, School and Nation
    Family, School and Nation This book recovers the voice of child protagonists across children’s and adult literature in Bengali. It scans literary representations of aberrant child- hood as mediated by the institutions of family and school and the project of nation-building in India in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The author discusses ideals of childhood demeanour; locates dissident children who legitimately champion, demand and fight for their rights; examines the child protagonist’s confrontations with parents at home, with teachers at school and their running away from home and school; and inves- tigates the child protagonist’s involvement in social and national causes. Using a comparative framework, the work effectively showcases the child’s growing refusal to comply as a legacy and an innovative departure from analogous portrayals in English literature. It further reviews how such childhood rebellion gets contained and re-assimilated within a predomi- nantly cautious, middle-class, adult worldview. This book will deeply interest researchers and scholars of literature, espe- cially Bengali literature of the renaissance, modern Indian history, cultural studies and sociology. Nivedita Sen is Associate Professor of English literature at Hans Raj College, University of Delhi. Her translated works (from Bengali to English) include Rabindranath Tagore’s Ghare Baire ( The Home and the World , 2004) and ‘Madhyabartini’ (‘The In-between Woman’) in The Essential Tagore (ed. Fakrul Alam and Radha Chakravarty, 2011); Syed Mustafa Siraj’s The Colo- nel Investigates (2004) and Die, Said the Tree and Other Stories (2012); and Tong Ling Express: A Selection of Bangla Stories for Children (2010).     6/8/2017 Sunil Gangopadhyay ­ Wikipedia Sunil Gangopadhyay From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Sunil Gangopadhyay or Sunil Ganguly (Bengali: সুনীল গেЀাপাধᘃায় Shunil Gônggopaddhae), (7 September 1934 – 23 Sunil Gangopadhyay October 2012)[2] was an Indian Bengali poet and novelist based in the Indian city of Kolkata.[4] Born in Faridpur, in what is now Bangladesh, Gangopadhyay obtained his master's degree in Bengali from the University of Calcutta. In 1953 he and a few of his friends started a Bengali poetry magazine, Krittibas. Later he wrote for many different publications. Ganguly created the Bengali fictional character Kakababu and wrote a series of novels on this character which became significant in Indian children's literature. This is the crucial point where one addresses the absence of the woman in the Feluda series. Whenever I have discussed the characterization of Feluda, I have been asserting the privileging of the male rationality over feminine intuition or passion has rid the narrative of any space for the woman. Unfortunately, it is a fact that children’s fiction in Bengali, suffers the lack of female characters. Even the genre is called ‘kishoresahitya’ (literature for young males), which quite benignly does away with the ‘kishori’ (young girls) from the scheme of things. Young female readership has been handled extremely callously by authors writing in this genre. It seems like one is forced into a world where one learns to think like a boy, perceive like a boy, read like a boy regardless of the reader’s gender.

On the other side, in the other Bengal, events move to an inexorable climax, while the fictional characters flit across the stage, the shadow of actual historical figures loom large — Ayub Khan, Yahya Khan, General Niazi and the day by day account of how the mighty Pakistan Army, one of the best in the world was doomed to a most humiliating defeat. This novel of epic proportions is an unique experiment in blending fiction with facts, an attempt to truthfully capture a swiftly moving course of events, a compelling novel difficult to put down.

It is both a release from the drab routine life of school and bullying of the elders at home and society, and a way of exerting the new-found ecstasies of life. The virginity of mind searches most eagerly and passionately for the truth, and innocent sense of boldness is ever hungry to unravel the seeming mysteries of life. This paper proposes to make a comparative study of the British writer Enid Blyton and the Bengali writer Shasthipada Chattopadhyay who, despite gaps of place, time and gender, have exploited this spirit most successfully in their respective efforts to tell detective stories involving young boys and girls. In the process, the paper intends to draw attention to an interesting facet of pop-lit, a cult that has already become a part of mainstream literary culture. By : Editor Published On : 14 Jul, 2020 09:00 AM IST INVC NEWS Mumbai , It was in 1887 when the most popular fictional detective character Sherlock Holmes was introduced to the world through ‘A Study in Scarlet’ by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It hardly took time for people to start believing that Sherlock Holmes was a real person, so much so that readers flooded Sir Arthur with innumerable letters seeking Sherlock’s autograph and expressing the desire to meet him in person. While the character of Sherlock Holmes went on to become the most suitable reference point for any and every fictional detective character that followed, the aforementioned facts pretty much explain the impact such characters and stories have on the readers or the audience. The Indian audience too have not remained untouched with this phenomenon. Be it Dhoti-Kurta-clad Byomkesh Bakshi, carrot-chewing Karamchand or hatted gentleman Sam D’Silva, Indian audience and readers have always been fond of this genre of art. However, it is an irony that the first indigenous Indian detective character in a mystery story was conceived by an Englishman, HRF Keating. The character was Inspector Ganesh Ghote, a cop in the Bombay police department. The character got instant success as he appeared in ‘The Perfect Murder’. Its popularity resulted in critically-acclaimed actors Naseeruddin Shah and Zia Mohyeddin portraying the character on screen. Apart from Ganesh Ghote, the Indian audience/readers have showered immense love on fictional detective characters such as Satyajit Ray’s Feluda, Sunil Gangopadhyay’s Kakababu, Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay’s Byomkesh Bakshi and Pankaj Prakash-Anil Chaudhary’s Karamchand Jasoos.
