274 THE CENSUS OF QUIRINIUS. I. THE difficulties caused by the association established in Luke ii. 1 between the birth of Christ and a census taken in J udma at the order of the Emperor August us are well known. Dr. Schiirer devotes thirty-four pages in his Gesch. des Jiid. Volkes im Zeitalter Jesu Christi to the subject, and any discussion of the difficulties might properly be rested on the foundation of his learned and careful work; but it is better merely to acknowledge my debt to him, and to leave our difference of opinion unnoticed. In the Ex POSITOR for January, 1897, p. 72, it is mentioned that exigencies of time prevented me at the moment from stat ing an argument on this subject. The pledge implied may be now redeemed; and though it is obviously beyond the bounds of an article to discuss the subject as a whole, one point at least, which is of central importance, may be illustrated. The words of Luke should, as I believe, be understood thus : " There was issued a decree by Cmsar Augustus that census should be taken of the entire Roman world ; this [with which we are concerned] took place, the first census [of the series], while Quirinius was administering the province Syria." I believe that the synchronisms in Luke ii. 1, 2 and iii. 1, 2 are founded on a careful and extended study of history, and that the author wished to place Christian history in its proper position on the background of Roman history. Obviously it is impossible to maintain that view, if the first synchronism, which he establishes at such a critical point in his narrative, is a mere blunder, not merely erroneous in some detail, but involving false views in a number of essential points (as some scholars maintain). -

January 19, 2014 False Ideas About Jesus Christ (part two) By Wayne Jackson Without question, Jesus of Nazareth is the most dominating figure in human history. Who was he? Alternatively, in the words of the Teacher himself in a question to the leaders of the Jewish community, “What do you think of the Christ?” Every intellectually reflective person must come to grips with this engaging question. The available data regarding the identity of Jesus are definitive. He is the Christ, the Son of God (John 20:30-31). Regrettably, however, there are numerous erroneous opinions regarding him in the marketplace of religious ideas. Same Person As The Father Those who are affiliated with the United Pentecostal Church contend that “Jesus” is merely the earthly name of God, the Father. They allege there is but one person who is God, but that “God” is represented in three manifestations — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Scripture, however, reveals a clear distinction between the Father and the Son, and between the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Jews had never seen the father nor heard his voice (John 1:18; 5:37), but they had both seen and heard Christ. Hence, Christ was not the same as the Father. The person who abides in the Lord’s doctrine has both the Father and the Son (2 John 9) — both implies a plurality. One could sin against Christ and be forgiven, but not the Spirit (Matthew 12:32). Therefore, Christ and the Spirit were not the same person. This topic is discussed more fully in the author’s tract, The Biblical Doctrine Of The Godhead (1994). -
Was Jesus Really Raised from the Dead?
Was Jesus really raised from the dead? The evidence that Jesus is a real, historical figure is so overwhelming that very few skeptics try to say Jesus never existed. Still, since Jesus could not have been raised from the dead unless He was an actual historical figure, it seems necessary to briefly discuss whether or not Jesus is a fictional character (some skeptics have likened Him to Santa Claus). The gospels, which are highly regarded historical documents, say that Jesus lived, but they are by no means the only source. Proof for Jesus being a real person is found in the writings of Josephus, a first century Jewish historian who said: “He convened a meeting of the Sanhedrin and brought before them a man named James, the brother of Jesus, who was called the Christ, and certain others. He accused them of having transgressed the law and delivered them up to be stoned” (Josephus, The Antiquities 20:200). This historical reference not only proves that Jesus lived, it is especially noteworthy because Jesus and Josephus were so different. Jesus encouraged people to pay taxes and encouraged people to submit to the government. Josephus was mainly interested in the Jews’ struggle against Rome and political matters (his philosophy was the very opposite of Jesus’ teaching). In spite of these two very different philosophies, Josephus does refer to Jesus and says people “called” Him the “Christ.” Another reference to Jesus is found in the writings of Tacitus, a premier first century Roman historian. Tacitus said, “Nero fastened the guilt and inflicted the most exquisite tortures on a class hated for their abominations, called Christians by the populace. -

CGG Weekly: The House of Annas (01-May-20) "There is no safety for honest men but by believing all possible evil of evil men." —Edmund Burke 01-May-20 The House of Annas The evangelist Luke writes in Luke 3:1-2: "Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, . while Annas and Caiaphas were high priests, the word of God came to John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness." We know what happened at the end of this story: Pilate condemned Jesus Christ to crucifixion on Passover day in AD 31. But how much do we know about the people who conspired to put Him to death, Annas and Caiaphas, who were high priests at the time? These two men were Sadducees. The Sadducees did not leave any written records themselves, but The Jewish Encyclopedia summarizes their views and principles: The Sadducees represented the powerful and wealthy, and their interests focused on the here and now. They tended to be astute politicians. They conducted their lives to enrich themselves and protect their positions of power. In rejecting the prophets, they did not believe in a resurrection (Acts 23:8). The same verse says they did not believe in angels or demons either. They judged harshly; mercy does not seem to have part of their character. Unlike the Pharisees, who maintained that the Oral Law provided for a correct interpretation of God's Word, the Sadducees believed only in the written law and a literal interpretation of it. -

The Chronology of Jesus’ Life A Detailed and Dated Timeline of the Life and Ministry of Jesus Christ ABSTRACT: This chronology uses a framework of nine signs in the heavens to help date the birth, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus. The Passover/Exodus event forms a typology for Jesus’ life.1 It continues to sequence and date precisely the events of Jesus’ life. Understanding the phrase in the second-first Sabbath (Luke 6:1 Douay), revealed that Jesus’ public ministry was two years in duration. It also revealed that Jesus did many Passover related actions and teachings, at times and places other than at Passover in Jerusalem. Instead, He did them around Passover in the second month and around the solar Passover. Much as Dr. Jaubert proposed the solar Passover as the date for the Last Supper. The gospel of Matthew was determined to be in sequential chronological order. These insights helped link the vast majority of Jesus’ ministry to the few weeks of these Passover events. It was further revealed that there were a few similar events that occurred a month before Passover in the month of Adar. The order and character of the events strengthen and even forces the dates of Jesus’ actions and teaching. The Exodus and first Passover form the plot for Jesus’ life. Accurately chronicling Jesus’ entire ministry gives a clearer picture and more insight into Jesus and God’s plan, work, and ways. This Passover order and structure can aid one to remember the details and order of the events of Jesus’ ministry. -

John the Baptist was an ascetic, and conducted a ministry in the Judean wilderness that involved preaching and baptism. His popularity and the revolutionary possibilities of his message of social justice led to his arrest, imprisonment, and execution by Herod Antipas, probably in A.D. 28 or 29. A. Summary A. The Sources, Their Character, and Their Use There are two forms of John’s title in the NT: ho baptistēs “the baptist” is a formal title; ho baptizōn “the baptizer” is an epithet. Grammatically, the latter form is a present active participal in which the verbal meaning of habitual behavior rings strongly; it most likely was the earlier form, historically speaking. The primary sources for determining the history of John the Baptist are the NT and Josephus. In the NT John is referred to in all four gospels and in the book of Acts, while in Josephus there is one short but suggestive passage. This passage is especially important because it is the only extrabiblical source. However, we cannot use either of these sources without weighing their historical reliability. All ancient historical documents are biased in one way or another by special interests and apologetic concerns. This judgment applies to Josephus as well as to the NT.
