OPEN POTTERY STUDIO The pottery studio will be open for use during off-class times for practice with hand building, wheel throwing and other projects involving stoneware, chads bod, or earthenware clay. Clay fees include clay, glaze, and one each of bisque and glaze firings (excluding alternative firings). Open pottery projects are fired with scheduled classroom kiln firings. Specialized firing will incur an additional fee. General Studio hours are: Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.; Fridays from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. - Noon. The Pottery studio will be closed to open pottery participants when ARCC classes are scheduled, and on the following dates: October 11, November 25. Ages 16 and up. RAKU POTTERY Get ready for some smoke and fire! Raku is an exciting, yet unpredictable way to fire pottery. This form of pottery is a process where ceramic ware is removed from a kiln while it is red hot, and placed into easily combustible materials greatly reducing the amount of oxygen around the pot. This gives glazed pots a fantastic variety of colors Spend 3 weeks making creations, one week to glaze, then poof! – fire in an outdoor kiln on Saturday, October 16, to get extraordinary pieces unobtainable from a regular kiln firing. Please note: Due to surface characteristic from the firing processes, Raku ware is for decorative purposes only, causing it to be unsafe for use with food items. Ages 18 and up. LOOM WEAVING Learn several aspects of weaving and setting up a multiple harness loom from warp calculations to fully dressing it. Each student will have a loom to set up and work on. Classes range from Beginning Weaving; Advanced Beginning Weaving; to Individual Study; Beginning students will weave a small hand towel. Advanced Beginning Students will weave a small table runner. Individual Study projects depend on what the student wishes to learn and weave. There is a material fee of $20 or more depending on project chosen payable to the instructor. The ARCC has 15 looms available for students but each session is limited to 4 students. Ages 18 and up. NEW! WARPING A UNION LOOM WORKSHOP Hands on class warping a “Union Rug Loom” with a section back beam warping system. If you have a loom at home with pegs on the back beam and have no idea how to warp it, or just want to learn a new warping method, this class is for you. Students will take turns in a round robin style warping the loom. OPEN WEAVING STUDIO The weaving studio will be open during off class times for your own personal project on one of the ARCC’s looms. Fees include use of a loom not being used for classes and any of the ARCC’s weaving equipment in the studio. The weaving studio will be closed to open studio participants when ARCC classes are scheduled and on the following dates: October 11, November 25. Open weaving studio participants MUST schedule an appointment for an initial orientation prior to working in the studio. Participants will also have to provide their own supplies which may include yarn, scissors, and any other supplies necessary to complete their project. CREATIVE WRITING FOR TEENS Whether you want to write short stories, poetry, or a novel, you're in the right place. Our class will focus on the basics of creative writing and all of the tricks of the trade. The first three weeks of class will consist of learning about the various types of creative writing and discovering where your talents lie. During the two week break you will develop a work in progress in your chosen medium and the last three weeks of the session will be spent editing and polishing your pieces. The instructor will be available over email/chat during the two week break to help with any questions you might have. The Monday after our session we will have an optional showcase/ reading where you can present your work to family and friends like the professional writers do. WALKING TOUR OF HIGHLANDS HISTORIC DISTRICT Celebrate historic preservation with a guided tour through Aberdeen’s Highlands Historic District. Gain insight into the past and learn some of the unique history behind homes, builders and past owners. The leisurely 45-minute walk will be led by a member of the Landmark Commission and held on Thursday, September 23, at 6:30 p.m. People should meet at the corner of 12th Avenue North and Main Street.
