2 Hello FCA Southwest Region Members,

With springtime here, our club’s events calendar is in full swing! In May alone, our dedicated event chairpersons have organized four events to enjoy. From our Kentucky Derby Drive and Party, Marshall’s Tom Malloy Collection Tour, our popular Concorso concours with Maranello’s finest presented on historic Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena, to a special invitation to Snaidero USA/Pininfarina’s showroom, we have a lot of unique experiences that your Ferrari will beg you to attend.

In March, Marv and I attended the FCA National Board Meeting where all Regional Directors are invited to help guide the club’s direction. Three key developments were announced during the three full days of meetings in Atlanta.

Firstly, an agreement with Ferrari SpA was signed to join their International Council of Ferrari Clubs. This agreement solidifies the club’s relationship with the factory and its North American organization, plus strengthens our mutual relationships for the future.

The second announcement was FCA’s “Bucks Back” program with money saving benefits on discounts from any authorized Ferrari dealer in the US and Canada, driving schools, vehicle lease and transportation companies. The discount from just one service could pay May-June 2010 for your year’s membership, so there’s never been a better reason to be a FCA member. You can also get a personalized Visa credit card with a photo of your Ferrari on it. There is President ’s no annual fee, so why not carry a card that can get more attention than your Black Card?

Thirdly, and even more exciting is the initial planning of the FCA’s 50th anniversary in a Message year long, continent-wide celebration beginning in 2012. Our Region will be at the front of the line for the golden year festivities as our FCA Southwest Region will be host for the FCA • Springtime Events 2012 International Meet. Chairman Doug Prestine is our well qualified event chairperson • Get Your “Bucks Back” who helped develop the Avila Beach Concours Weekend. This beautiful locale along California’s central coast will play host to our event which will offer numerous activities for • FCA 50th Anniversary members and their . We recently held our initial meeting to discuss preliminary details, and both Doug and I invite you to be an “engaged” member to assist our club in • In Your Area Meets the development and running of the five day event.

Our In Your Area coordinators have been having some very fun informal events. I attended Mark’s meeting at Supercar Sunday in Woodland Hills and I had a great time seeing the wide variety of cars at this show sponsored by the Auto Gallery. Several members enjoyed Kenny’s first West LA group for a drive and Guy’s Santa Paula Airport meet gave Ventura area members a chance to have a great time among the planes. Each of our coordinators look forward to seeing you at their next get together, so take a drive next month to say “hi.”

I look forward to seeing you at our club’s events or at a board meeting at the Petersen where all members are invited.

8 SF 9 CHAMPIONSHIP at Dromo 1 Race Number 1 of 3

Nearly two dozen racers met at Dromo 1 in Orange, CA to go wheel to wheel for the first round of our three race 2010 FCA SW Kart Challenge Championship Series. Article By Photos By Tex K. Otto Gene Crowe & Tex K. Otto Several driver’s caravanned down from West LA to meet up with the rest of our enthusiastic group at Dromo 1. As we assembled in Dromo 1’s lounge for our private event where we had full access to the indoor facility, you could tell who was taking this event serious by who was carrying a custom painted Ferrari themed helmet or donned a fitted driving suit.

After an orientation and safety meeting, driver’s schedules for our 12 heat races were posted where each driver was entered in four heats. Point for finishes in each heat would deter - mine a driver’s placing in the three semi-final races for all drivers. The top nine drivers would be gridded in the main event.

We had a lot of racin’ to do. Dromo ran a well scheduled event with eight to nine drivers suited up in preparation for the next race as one was underway. Drivers had some races back to back, with them stepping out of one kart to climb into another one for their next race which gave a kind of enduro feel. Between races drivers compared lap times, their lines and watched the others compete on the challenging course.

Dromo’s karts had digital readouts on the steering wheel so you could see your last lap time and your placing in the race which allowed drivers to compare their times using different lines around the track. Dromo also had just changed the track layout to create the fastest road course they’ve ever had, with more open corners and a huge sweeper that wrapped around the building. With lots of places to pass, there was constant side by side racing.

The smooth track surface was resistant to aggressive driving until the rubber tires got a bit of heat in them after a couple of laps. But that didn’t hinder the action at the first corner in 10 many heats. What looks exciting in a first corner in Formula 1 is even more intense at ground level in a kart when dive bombers aim for the inside line with their throttle to the floor, eyes closed and arms flinging about with hopes that they’ve gained some positions.

In the main event, driver’s were queued up in order of point ranking on the staggered grid on the front straight awaiting the starter’s green light. I started second behind Brian Trager and overtook the lead in a few laps, closely paced throughout the ten lap feature by Jon Johnson and Bert Meli, our order of finish.

A number of past Dromo participants have mentioned to me that they’ve enjoyed the events to the degree that they have bought their own karts to race, so that they can enjoy the fun as a family. Karts are addictive!

Our club is holding two more kart challenge events as part of our series, and you’re welcome to join us at each event regardless if you’ve attended any of Photo captions opposite page: the others. Join us for the fun at MB2 in Thousand Oaks on June 26, and Go About as tight as it can get through the corners at Dromo 1. Last year on January 24, 2009 we had two popular events scheduled for our members. One was the 2009 annual Auto Gallery Tech Session. It POURED that day. This year, on January 27th we Article By Event Photos By also had two popular events scheduled for our members including the 2010 annual Auto Jim Bindman Larry O’Rourke Gallery Tech Session. It POURED that day too.

That really isn’t supposed to happen here in SUNNY Southern California. The good news is that we now have indisputable proof that the cure for a Southern California drought is to schedule multiple FCA events on the same day.

At 8:30 am, the huge modern service facility was quiet and empty....we were afraid no members would brave the elements and actually show up. But a little before 9:00 am the familiar sound of prancing horses and intermittent windshield wipers began to wail in the morning gloom.

A bit more than 20 members finally arrived. Because of the smaller than normal attendance, owners had very thorough inspections with the staff who spent ample time on each car and explained every issue. Each car was inspected for well over 30 minutes and many systems were checked including brakes, suspension, belts, hoses, tires, motor mounts and undercarriage wear. This type of inspection at no charge is an exceptional benefit to our members.

The best cappuccino machine this side of Modena was busy along with snacks (great cookies). The Auto Gallery Boutique was offering huge discounts on official Ferrari merchandise and generous “goody bags” were given to all the members. Sasha was on hand in case anyone wanted to buy or lease a new 599 and Nick was offering FCA discounts on parts. Continued on page 14

14 SF 15 8th Annual Running

On Sunday, March 7th, a bit later in the year than usual, we had over 100 participants meet on a blustery- cold, cloudy day that portended rain but turned out otherwise. Article By Event Photos By Tom Brockmiller Wally Clark & Tom Brockmiller The two hour drive to the Thornton Winery in Temecula was just as we like it. Uneventful but beautiful and challenging through the back roads of DeLuz. A little water in the fjords never hurts as a reason for complaint. A control well beyond our ability.

What was within our ability was the creative buffet that met us at the winery. Because of possible weather constraints we dined in “the Cave”. The winerie’s storage vault which, while a bit confined, created many new and renewed friendships. A wonderful reason for participating in club events.

As usual, the Ferrari only parking was filled with all manner of the marque. One member, remaining nameless, had the audacity to bring his Porsche Turbo. Well, in truth, we encour - age this as a driving event and you are always welcome to bring another steed.

While dining, we had FCA Southwest member, Frank Mandarano of Concorso Italiano fame, inform us of both his new and now famous Italian “Car Guys Tour” as well as a Southern California rally he will be implementing. It will be an ambitious event that only Frank could undertake. Stay tuned.

We wish to thank our usual and trustworthy event committee for implementing the start flags and coordination in general, Don West, Jill Curtis and Bill Inglis.

And, special thanks to all of you participants and members for making the event possible. SF

16 SF 17 North American Premiere

Ferrari knows how to throw a debutant party, where three beautiful 458 Italias were presented to potential suitors for their North American premiere. Held at the lavish Fleur de Lys estate in Holmby Article By Photos By Hills, the gala event raised $601,000 for relief efforts in Haiti by the CMMB (Catholic Tex K. Otto Tex K. Otto and Peter Wu Medical Mission Board) and the William J. Clinton Foundation.

Among the 500 Ferrari aficionados who mingled among the Ferraris, car collectors, actors and socialites were John Mayer who donated his acoustic performance during the evening, and director and Ferrari collector Michael Bay, recognized for his long-lasting friendship with the company. The party was hosted by Piero Ferrari, Deputy Chairman, Amedeo Felisa, worldwide CEO of the company and Marco Mattiacci, the newly appointed North America CEO.

Delicious hors d’oeuvres and open bars primed the audience to unlatch their hearts and Black Cards to bid on exclusive Ferrari items. Wall Street Journal automotive journalist Dan Neil with auctioneer David Gooding who donated his expertise, worked the audience for their bids on Ferrari driver ’s Bahrain winning racing suit. Neil tempted Alonso admirers by stating “His taut little buns were actually in here,” It raised $31,000. Two experiences as a team member at the Canadian Gran Prix in Montreal went for $20,000 and $21,000 and were considered to be great deals.

To close this exceptional evening, bidding began on the first 458 Italia to arrive in the United States in July, which will include a special plaque signed by Piero. Bidding quickly got to a half million when “Talk Soup” host and comedian Joel McHale got on stage to prompt/disparage (“Is that your daughter or wife?”) the players to a final bid of $530,000.

Ferrari is to be commended for their ongoing commitment to social responsibility. The funds raised at this and other charity events with the help of generous patrons, allows for more organizations to aid those in need around the world. SF 18
