Theunissen Midden-bronstijdsamenlevingen in het zuiden van de Lage Landen Liesbeth Theunissen In deze studie staan de overblijfselen van prehistorische boerengemeenschappen van omstreeks 3500 jaar geleden centraal. Het gaat om samenlevingen die de pleistocene zandgronden van Zuid-Nederland en Vlaanderen in de periode van 1800 tot 1050 voor Chr. bewoonden. Van hun boerenbestaan van toen rest niet veel, maar het databestand aan archeologische ontdekkingen Midden-bronstijdsamenlevingen in het zuiden van de Lage Landen uit deze periode groeit sinds jaar en dag. Het was de archeoloog Willem Glasbergen die in de jaren vijftig de overblijfselen toeschreef aan de zogenoemde ‘Hilversum-cultuur’. Hij deed dit op grond van een aantal nieuwe element- en in de materiële restanten. In eerste instantie was zijn definitie hoofdzakelijk gebaseerd op bepaalde typen grafmonumenten en de urnvondsten daaruit. Nederzettingen waren lange tijd schaars. Dat veranderde halverwege de jaren zestig toen het onderzoek bij de plaatsen Zijderveld en Dodewaard ronde huizen opleverde, die duidelijk afweken van de langgerekte, drieschepige woon-stalboerderijen in Noord-Nederland. Glasbergen zag daarin een bevestiging van zijn hy- pothese: de ongewone verschijnselen waren ontstaan door een migratie van een Zuid-Engels volk naar het zuiden van de Lage Landen. Veertig jaar na de definitie van de Hilversum-cultuur is het archeologische databestand opnieuw tegen het licht gehouden. Reden daarvoor was het toegenomen gegevensbestand en het veranderde paradigma. De groeiende kritiek op de migratietheorie als verklaringsmodel had de Britse migranten uit het denken doen verdwijnen. De tijd was rijp voor een evaluatie van het begrip Hilversum-cultuur. Met in de ene hand de restanten van het grafritueel, de grafmonumenten en de begravingen, en in de andere hand de overblijfselen van hun boerenerven schetst deze studie een beeld van de boerensamenlevingen van 3500 jaar geleden. -

When discussing the concept of despair in the Middle Ages, scholars often note how strongly medieval people linked despair with suicide. Indeed, one finds the most recent and comprehensive treatment of the topic in Alexander Murray’s Suicide in the Middle Ages. Murray concludes that most medieval suicides had suffered from “this- worldly” despair, brought on by fatal illness, emotional or material stress, or some other unbearable circumstance. However, Murray also observes that medieval theologians and the people they influenced came to attribute suicide to theological despair, i.e. a failure to hope for God’s mercy. This dissertation investigates the work of three well-known medieval authors who wrote about and very likely experienced such theological despair. In keeping with Murray’s findings, none of these three ultimately committed suicide, thus allowing me to explore how medieval people overcame their theological despair. I have chosen these three authors because they not only wrote about theological despair, but drew from their own experiences when doing so. Their personal testimony was intended to equip their readers with the spiritual tools necessary to overcome their own despair. -

Kilton, Emeritus ABSTRACT This dissertation examines representations of book collecting by German women in the early modern period in order to explore the role of gender in this activity. Portrayals of book collectors in the modern and early modern eras offer examples of how this identity is constructed, particularly in the underlying assumptions and expectations that determine who is defined as a book collector and what criteria are used to shape that decision. In the case of four early modern women--Elisabeth Sophie Marie of Braunschweig-Lüneburg (1683-1767); Elisabeth Ernestine Antonie of Sachsen-Meiningen (1681-1766); Caroline of Ansbach (1683- 1737); and Wilhelmine of Bayreuth (1709-1758)--the act of collecting is depicted as essential to their social status and an integral part of their lives. Finally, in an in-depth case study of an early modern German woman who was a book collector, Sophie of Hanover (1630-1714), this study analyzes how she represented her collecting activities and textual interaction as well as how she is represented in other texts. The way in which these early modern German women were represented and represented themselves as collectors reveals a great deal about the position of women within wider networks concerning the exchange of texts and information. -

Neem de tijd en rijd niet te hard; de wegen zijn vaak smal en soms glad, maar je mist dan ook wat we je zo graag willen laten zien. We willen je vriendelijk vragen rekening te houden met de bewoners van de prachtige dorpjes en met de natuur. Neem de tijd om hier en daar te stoppen en bijvoorbeeld koffie te drinken uit je meegebrachte thermoskan. Voor de puzzelrit is onverwacht heel veel belangstelling. Bij het maken van de puzzelrit hebben we daarom een paar keuzes moeten maken, want er is te veel moois te zien. Ook hebben we rekening gehouden met de RIVM-regels. Zo hebben we vooral de buitenwegen gekozen en de grotere dorpen, zoals Oud-Beijerland, Numansdorp en ’s-Gravendeel overgeslagen. De route en de vragen zijn gemaakt voor volwassenen. Het duurt ongeveer 4 uur om de route helemaal te rijden. Je kan er ook voor kiezen om de puzzelrit over meerdere dagen te verspreiden. Het is een rondrit; dit betekent dat je vanuit verschillende plaatsen kunt starten. In 924 Æthelstan ascended the throne of Mercia after the death of his father Edward, while his younger half- brother Ælfweard received the crown Torben R. Gebhardt of Wessex. The question whether or not this division of Edward’s realm Imperial Concepts in Late Anglo-Saxon England would have proven to be permanent was rendered obsolete by the death of Ælfweard only sixteen days after his father’s, leaving Æthelstan as the sole sovereign of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom.1 This kingdom in itself was already a conglomerate. A kingdom forged by Edward the Elder who ob- tained direct rule over Mercia in 918 and was accepted to fæder and to hla- forde2 by the kingdoms of York, Scotland and Wales. Yet it was Æthelstan who established direct rule over the Yorkish kingdom in the north, which was never held by a southern king before. Hence, historians, medieval and modern alike, for instance Sarah Foot in a recent biography, often styled him “First king of the English”.3 Yet, it might well be that this title, already loaded with a variety of implications which are hard to prove beyond doubt, does not reflect the aspirations of the king to their fullest, but that he con- templated over an imperial claim.
