TEL/FAX: 01732 461943 The Bull Pen, Wickhurst Manor Farm, Wickhurst Road, , Kent TN14 6LY Welcome to the April Link from the Hever Rose and Horticultural Society.

Last November the Hever Hort held a committee meeting to finalise the schedule and programme of activities for 2019. One of our committee members brought a photograph, taken in her garden, of a daffodil in full bloom! This shows the dilemma we face every year, should we change the dates of our shows to reflect changes in climate, or stick to the same date, usually around the beginning of April? Looking back over recent years, we have tended to stick to the same date and trusted that there will still be enough daffodils and tulips to mount a good show. We seem to have done pretty well and will be keeping our fingers crossed for our show this year, which is on 6 April.

Of course, we are not solely reliant on daffodils, as there

are classes covering other flowers and shrubs, flower arrangements, children’s, and domestic exhibits, the latter including lemon and whisky marmalade. If you would like to LINK enter, the closing date is Wednesday 3 April, you can find the full schedule in the Hort section of www.hever.org. Added to the exhibits are the refreshments of home made cakes and tea, so we have an irresistible combination and if you have a bit of spare time between 2 and 4pm, we would love to see you.

After the Spring Show the next event is the Plant Sale, on Saturday, 11th May. This is a combination of bought in plants and those grown and donated by members of the Society.

Hever Castle continued to be the venue until 1955, when shows were held in the Hever School field. In 1974 Lord Astor sponsored a garden competition and in 1979 he suggested the Society hold a rose show in conjunction with the Rose Society. This was held in the Castle Pavilion and the following year the Society held its own show in Hever Village Hall, where shows have been held since. From 1979 the Society became what it is today, the Hever Rose and Horticultural Society. The Society is always seeking new members so why not help it keep going for another 118 years. Please contact me on 01342 851307 if you would like to join. The programme of events for 2019 is on www.hever.org. If anyone has information relating to the early years of the Society, please get in touch. Doug Bowern Chair

Cottage gardens were in vogue in* 1901 as exponents such as Gertrude Jekyll and the Arts and Crafts movement had rejected the more formal gardening of the Victorian era. The watercolourist Helen Allingham, painted many romantic cottage gardens in front of thatched cottages, full of hollyhocks, daisies, sweet william and also vegetables in the Eden Valley.
