EMOTIONAL SEGREGATION: HUCKLEBERRY FINN IN THE MODERN CLASSROOMt Sharon E. Rush* In this article, I explore emotional segregation and how it junctions in the context of Huckleberry Finn for both personal and academic reasons. Recently, I read Huckleberry Finn because it had been assigned to my daughter's middle school class. I was concerned for her welfare because she is Black and worried how the book would affect her. To understand her reactions, I had to understand the con­ troversy surrounding the book, particularly as a White mother. I have reflected quite deeply on the question whether the book is racist. I define "racism" as a belief in the myth of White superiority and Black inferiority, also known as the race pre­ cept.1 I conclude that Huckleberry Finn is racist. Undoubtedly, my conclusion reflects my experience as a White mother of a Black child. Without those experi­ ences, it is possible my whiteness would not have allowed me to understand why and how teaching the book creates emotional segregation. INTRODUCTION This paper explores the harm of teaching The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn2 in public school classrooms. Such harm can be broadly described as emotional segregation, which occurs when society sanctions disrespect. To understand the effects of emotional segregation, compare Toni Morrison's reaction to the novel to that of Ernest Hemingway. "4 Imagine Morrison and Hemingway sitting together in the same 8th grade public school classroom. They are separated by more than a simple difference of opinion about the literary value of the book. The novel shamed Morrison and emotionally segregated her from Hemingway and her other White classmates who were not shamed by the book. Further emotional segregation resulted from her classmates voluntarily isolating themselves from her because they could not relate to her experience. Should we remedy emotional segregation based on race? Emo­ tional segregation may be considered solely a remnant of the legal subordination of Blacks under de jure segregation: a social harm model. This is consistent with the Supreme Court's reasoning in Plessy v. Ferguson, in which the Court held that Blacks have only themselves to blame for any feelings of inferiority.5 Under this model, harms resulting from emotional segregation rely on social, not legal, rules for remedies. For example, a public school teacher could avoid creating emotional segregation by choosing not to teach Huckleberry Finn. Alternatively, emotional segregation may be considered a con­ tinuing social and legal harm that is traceable to de jure segregation: a legal harm model. This is consistent with the Supreme Court's reasoning in Brown v. Board of Education, in which the Court held that de jure segregation violated the equal protection of Blacks be­ cause it "generates a feeling of inferiority as to [Black children's] status in the community that may affect their hearts and minds in a way unlikely ever to be undone."6 A legal harm model acknowl­ edges that social and legal inequality are linked, and presupposes that legal remedies should exist to address the inequality. Some legal harm mod­ els create broader protection from emotional segregation than other models and would move society closer to complete racial equality. At present, the law does not recognize emotional segregation as a legal harm, although it does recognize a similar concept, the ra­ cially hostile environment. 7 Emotional segregation based on race is no longer necessarily hostile, although it has its roots in the his­ torical institutions of slavery and de jure segregation. Today, segregation results from everyday interactions in civil society. It oc­ curs in places of worship, community centers, and schools. Moreover, it often is invisible to the "Hemingways," but devastating to the "Morrisons," as evidenced by their comments upon reading Huckleberry Finn. This article explores emotional segregation in a narrow context: emotional segregation of children based on race in public school classrooms.8 I analyze Huckleberry Finn to develop the concept be­ cause of the novel's canonical status and widespread use in public schools. I also limit my analysis to the development of a social harm model because it is important to stop emotional segregation as quickly as possible. Realistically, I do not think the current legal climate in the United States would be receptive to a legal harm model.9 However, people of color should not have to depend on 7. A racially hostile environment could be defined as an extreme case of emotional segregation. 8. I focus primarily on the racial divisiveness that exists between Blacks and Whites because Huckleberry Finn raises issues about race in the context of the institution of slavery and de jure segregation following the Civil War. Some scholars suggest that a focus on the "Black/White Paradigm" marginalizes other racial minority groups. My focus is limited in this article only because of the novel's theme and my personal experi­ ences. I believe it is important to bring a multi-racial discourse to the debate and I invite others to join in the discussion. 9. These are all important questions to ponder while analyzing Mark Twain’s novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. In fact, by placing critics of the novel in a dialogue, we can see both why the work has been and will continue to be controversial and why this work should remain a part of the American literary canon. The connection between the two ideas is that readers who find the novel unacceptable often do so because they do not read it in a sophisticated way that acknowledges Huck's unreliability, instead thinking that he speaks for the novel's values, even in his offhand racist comments. To establish his unreliability is to separate the novel's racial attitudes from those of its narrator. A Bildungsroman set in the pre-slavery days of America, the work follows the travails of a ten year old boy named Huckleberry Finn and his runaway slave friend Jim as they journey down the Mississippi River in search of freedom from a restrictive and hostile society.

Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn are the two most well-known characters among American readers that Mark Twain created. As a matter of fact, they are the most renowned pair in all of American literature. Twain’s father worked as a judge by profession, but he also worked in slave-trade sometimes. His uncle, John Quarles, owned 20 slaves; so from quite an early age, Twain grew up witnessing the practice of slave-trade whenever he spent summer vacations at his uncle's house. Many of his readers and critics have argued on his being a racist. Some call him an “Unexcusebale racist” and some say that Twain is no where even close to being a racist. Growing up in the times of slave trade, Twain had witnessed a lot of brutality and violence towards the African slaves.

    Kansas English, Vol. 98, No. 1 (2017) Mark Twain, the Dialogic Imagination, and the American Classroom Drew Clifton Colcher Abstract Mark Twain is often read as a provincial realist or naturalist whose works are disseminated in simplified versions as children’s stories or seen as humorous social criticism of the southern United States and its dialects. This article focuses on two of Twain’s novels—A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court (1889) and No. 44, the Mysterious Stranger (published posthumously with various titles)—in order to focus on the more modern, less provincial, novelistic aspects of Twain’s writing. The theories of Mikhail Bakhtin provide the background for a characterization of the novelistic nature of these works in an effort to re-focus Twain criticism away from realist or naturalist analysis and toward semiotic and structural considerations. This essay functions as an introductory-level presentation of Bakhtinian analysis and Twain criticism, as well as a reimagining of the role of Twain’s writings in the classroom, especially in light of recent controversies surrounding the language used in works like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Of paramount importance to this argument are the temporal, spatial, formal and thematic coordinates of the two books, and the assertion that they conform to Bakhtin’s conception of the novel and how it radically differs from other forms. How does the style and content of Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn differ from an earlier American masterpiece such as Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter? In particular, how does the “voice” of Huck compare to the voice of the narrator of The Scarlet Letter? CORE UNDERSTANDINGS: Identify what the students will know and/or be able to do. Through close reading of text excerpts, students will be able to compare and contrast works of literature and identify key characteristics of differences in tone, voice, and context. Alberti suggests that the academic establishment responded to the book's challenges both dismissively and with confusion. I don’t know anyone who tells the truth all the time, except perhaps Aunt Polly or the Widow Douglas or Tom Sawyer’s sister, Mary. These people are written about in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. That book ends like this: Tom and I find money that was stolen and we are allowed to keep it. We become rich. We each have 6,000 dollars in gold. Judge Thatcher put the money in a bank for us, and we can have a dollar a day. If asked to imagine Twain, most people would call to mind his bushy hair, mustache, and eyebrows along with his signature white suit, and, perhaps, a cigar.
