July 15, 1896. No. i. Diet and Happiness. At the April meeting of the Vegetarian Society, Mr. J. W. Hutchinson, the best known member of that talented family of singers stated that " the best medicine was Joy." He is undoubtedly right. Sick- ness is unhappiness ; health is joy; joy is love, and love is perfection. A person cannot be unhappy who loves his fellow creatures, and love, to be worthy of the name takes in all creation. Love of the individual is either selfishness or sensuality and is unworthy of the name. The scripture says "God is Love," but we do not require to turn to holy writ to learn this self evident law. Every instinct of our nature dem- onstrates this great truth. While we love we are happy and spread an aura of happiness around us. He must be a very bad man who could live among happy people and not be influenced by their joy. The reverse is true of hate, it spreads a miasmatic influence over all, blotting out every good influence ; THE VEGETARIAN. and degrading all coming within its sphere to one common level. As v^e cannot truly love our family v^ithout loving the rest of mankind, neither can we honestly love the human animal without loving the beautiful creatures which are animated with the same desires although expressed in different ways and emanating from different shaped bodies. The lark singing in the sky is spreading an area of joy as far as its voice can reach and probably contributes as much pure thought in the heart of man as many beings with higher or- ganization who are apt to consider themselves the lords of creation. Roman emperors are reported to have eaten dishes made of canary bird's tongues. Is it necessary to add any further testimony to demonstrate their iniquity but people of the present day supposed to be civilized eat pigeon pie. In fact, the lusts of flesh eaters are like their other lusts, never satisfied, and ever look- ing for some new sensation to be secured at the ex- pense of new victims. Demonstrate as you may that man is possessed of an immortal soul, it is impossible to deny that the actual figure we see is animal, subject to the same general laws of life, death and happiness as his four- legged contemporaries. Why then should we copy all the vices of the worst forms of animal life and neglect their unfailing instinct used in the selection of food? With one solitary exception all animals useful to man are herbivorous, and are practically confined to one article of diet. Half the life of the majority of women is devoted to the selection and preparation of food, wasting the time which could be put to THE VEGETARIAN. better purposes, and laying the foundation for ills in- numerable, when they have finally succeeded in des- troying the stomach which was intended to last through life in good repair. One class of food is sufficient, find out by experiment what is exactly suited to your stomach with its inherited weakness derived from flesh eating ancestors and then eat a sufficient quantity twice a day. Proper food selected from the fruits of the earth, be it grain, pulse, fruit or roots, will always be satisfying and is always en- joyed. You will never be hungry except when you set dowm to your meals and will always be happy because in protecting your own life you are not tak- ing the lives of others ; a clear conscience is the requisite of happiness. Different religions and peoples hold many diverse ideas of heaven. I recollect hearing of the death bed of an old sailor who was being comforted by a kind christian explaining according to her ideas the beauties of a future life. She was inter- rupted by the dying man, saying, "But, Miss, it can't be better than sitting in a public with a fiddle going, tobacco in your pipe and plenty of beer." This was his idea of perfect bliss. Others look for- ward to a place rest, while my best conception would be a place where we do not require to eat, dress or sleep and can work twenty-four hours per day. I think this is the experience of all vegetarians ; they are never tired, while flesh eaters living on an excit- ing and vitiated diet find it difficult to satisfy their hunger with a reasonable quantity of food. They are thus tempted to devour large quantities of un- healthy material which gradually wears out their di- THE VEGETARIAN. gestive organs and leaves them after each meal in a depressed condition of nerves and muscles, unfitted for v^ork and an easy prey for any form of dissipation v^hich may be encountered. This is equally true of all flesh- eating animals, most prominent in the great- est eaters. The serpent will lie dormant for weeks or months after swallowing a large mass of flesh, while lions and their like will be almost quiescent for a day after eating. Herbivorous animals are never in this condition, they eat their food with pleasure instead of passion and are always lively and alert. Life should be a perpetual joy from birth to death and this last great change should be hailed with pleasure; when having filled a hundred years or so with happiness and having accomplished all the good possible in this life, we hail with gladness the passage to another world where with renewed youth and an increased capacity for work we can joyfully start on new and greater tasks. That this will be the general condition of mankind I have no doubt when they re- turn to the proper food of man and abandon the use of flesh. The Drink-Crave—How to Cure, By J. C. Jackson, M. D. It is said there are not less than six hundred thou- sand habitual drunkards in the United States, and that of these sixty thousand at least die annually. In this reckoning is not included a much larger number of persons who are in the moderate use of intoxicat- ing drinks, and from whose ranks the supply against —; THE VEGETARIAN, the waste by death is annually made good. But how? From our children come our moderate drinkers from our moderate drinkers come our drunkards. During- the past fifty years efforts have been made which, for earnestness and enthusiasm, entitle those who have made them to the admiration of the wise and good the world over, to stay the transformation of sober, rational men and women into inebriated, irrational ones.

    219 No Animal Food: The Road to Veganism in Britain, 1909-1944 Leah Leneman1 UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH There were individuals in the vegetarian movement in Britain who believed that to refrain from eating flesh, fowl, and fish while continuing to partake of dairy products and eggs was not going far enough. Between 1909 and 1912, The Vegetarian Society's journal published a vigorous correspond- ence on this subject. In 1910, a publisher brought out a cookery book entitled, No Animal Food. After World War I, the debate continued within the Vegetarian Society about the acceptability of animal by-products. It centered on issues of cruelty and health as well as on consistency versus expediency. The Society saw its function as one of persuading as many people as possible to give up slaughterhouse products and also refused journal space to those who abjured dairy products. The year 1944 saw the word "vergan" coined and the breakaway Vegan Society formed. The idea that eating animal flesh is unhealthy and morally wrong has been around for millennia, in many different parts of the world and in many cultures (Williams, 1896). In Britain, a national Vegetarian Society was formed in 1847 to promulgate the ideology of non-meat eating (Twigg, 1982). Vegetarianism, as defined by the Society-then and now-and by British vegetarians in general, permitted the consumption of dairy products and eggs on the grounds that it was not necessary to kill the animal to obtain them. In 1944, a group of Vegetarian Society members coined a new word-vegan-for those who refused to partake of any animal product and broke away to form a separate organization, The Vegan Society.
