(1417-1471) Originalbeitrag erschienen in: Jürden Dendorfer/Ralf Lützelschwab (Hrsg.): Geschichte des Kardinalats im Mittelalter (Päpste und Papsttum 39). Stuttgart: Hiersemann, 2011, S. 335-397.

This absolutely exclusive place was born as an ancient Roman settlement dating back to 75 BC, of which it still preserves several finds and spaces of historical value that have been carefully brought back to life. The most relevant discovery is in the rooms on the Western side: it is an extraordinary flooring made in the last decades of the 1st century BC, decorated with coloured insertions creating elegant geometrical designs. There is a mesmerizing view over this estate's lower-ground floor, where it is possible to see the wonderful rooms found during renovation works. This palace has seen the likes of several guests, owners, and illustrious dwellers such as cardinals, counts, and members of noble Umbrian families, while the square opposite the palace is where St. Francis laid aside his garments in front of his father and started his religious life. The “piano nobile” of this outstanding estate was once home to Cardinal Bartolomeo Roverella and includes a big number of richly decorated halls. An extremely elegant and refined space adorned by Lionard S.p.A.

• 015-San Clemente
(015/25) San Clemente al Laterano The Basilica of San Clemente is an early 12th century minor basilica, a titular and conventual church built on top of the ruins of a late 4th century church, itself on top of important ancient Roman remains. The church is in rione Monte, between the Coliseum and San Giovanni in Laterano. The dedication is to Pope St Clement I. [1] History The present church was built around 1100. Below it is a 4th century church, and below that are two ancient Roman edifices. One of these is a Roman building in which it is traditionally believed that Christians worshipped until the 4th century church was built. [1] The 19th century excavations under the church uncovered a pagan temple, a Mithraeum or Temple of Mithras which belonged to one of many 1st century mystery religions in competition with Christianity in Rome. Next to this were the remains of a very solid structure, which they identified as the palazzo of Titus Flavius Clemens. Modern archaeologists now suspect this edifice was not a private dwelling, but might have been the Moneta (or Imperial mint for coinage). There is evidence of substantial alteration to this in the 3rd century, which modern publications suggest might have been as a result of conversion to Christian use. [1] 4th Century Lower Basilica The first possible documentary evidence of the basilica comes from the pontificate of Pope Siricius (384– 399), when a church dedicated to St Clement is mentioned. This accords with the epigraphical evidence discovered in the ruined basilica, although some scholars would prefer a slightly later date in the early 5th century.

Edited and translated by Michael von Cotta- Schönberg 5th version 2019 1 Abstract In 1442, the French dynasty of Anjou was expelled from the Kingdom of Naples by King Alfonso V of the Spanish House of Aragon. In 1459, King René d’Anjou sent his son, Jean d’Anjou, to the Kingdom to try to win it back and expel Alfonso’s son, Ferrante I. Ferrante had been invested with the Kingdom by Pope Pius II, since the popes were the nominal suzerains of the Kingdom.

  • Maestro Martino the Carneades of Cooks
introduction maestro martino the carneades of cooks Luigi Ballerini Dear Reader: This is a cookbook—a historical cookery book. If you do not care to read about the world from which it grew (and it would be perfectly understandable if you didn’t), skip the present introduction altogether. No need to feel guilty about it. Read it only if you are the type that does not mind a little suªering. I promise that, at the end, you will hasten to search for a great chef, either in the outside world or within yourself, to obtain from either of them (or from both) the culinary reward you undoubtedly deserve. or a good number of years, a few centuries in fact, the only known mention of Maestro Martino was to be found in the writings of the fifteenth-century Italian hu- Fmanist Bartolomeo Sacchi, who was acquainted with him personally. This means that the name of an unknown person was for a while on the lips and twice, at least, in the pen of a “reporter” who, in our day and age, is just as unknown as his “reportee.” The muse of history contributed some humor of its own. So enchanted was Sacchi (who in his own time was actually famous enough to need no introduction) with Martino’s gastronomic and rhetorical virtues that he did not hesitate to compare him to Carneades (213–129 b.c.e.), whom Sacchi’s contemporaries would have immediately recognized as the illustrious philoso- pher who headed the New Platonic Academy in Athens, and whose subtle eloquence and ar- gumentative dexterity, appreciated and praised during that rebirth of classical culture we know as the Renaissance, would eventually fall into the same oblivion that now surrounds the cook no less than the scholar.

  • The Burial Chapel and Reburial Ceremony
HOPE FOR SALVATION AND SALVATION GRANTED: THE BURIAL CHAPEL AND REBURIAL CEREMONY OF POPE SIXTUS V IN SANTA MARIA MAGGIORE by JENNY M. BEENE (Under the Direction of Shelley Zuraw) ABSTRACT This thesis is a discussion of the burial chapel of Pope Sixtus V in Santa Maria Maggiore and also his reburial ceremony, which occurred in the nave of Santa Maria Maggiore in August of 1591, a year after the pope’s death. What is referred to as a tempietto catafalque, designed by papal architect, Domenico Fontana, was erected before the apse of Santa Maria Maggiore for the celebration of the reburial. The author argues that the domed and centrally-planned form of the catafalque of Sixtus V functioned as a recognizable symbol of Christ and, therefore, salvation. Both the form and the symbolic meaning of the catafalque used in the reburial of Sixtus V derive from the monumental sacrament tabernacle, also by Domenico Fontana, located at the center of the pope’s burial chapel.
