Abstract The 1960s was a period of change for the British cinema, as it was for so much else. The six feature films directed by John Schlesinger in that decade stand as an exemplar of what those changes were. They also demonstrate a fundamental change in the narrative form used by mainstream cinema. Through a close analysis of these films, A Kind of Loving, Billy Liar, Darling, Far From the Madding Crowd, Midnight Cowboy and Sunday Bloody Sunday, this thesis examines the changes as they took hold in mainstream cinema. In effect, the thesis establishes that the principal mode of narrative moved from one based on objective realism in the tradition of the documentary movement to one which took a subjective mode of narrative wherein the image on the screen, and the sounds attached, were not necessarily a record of the external world. The world of memory, the subjective world of the mind, became an integral part of the narrative. -

The Rita Williams Popular Song Collection A Handlist A wide-ranging collection of c. 4000 individual popular songs, dating from the 1920s to the 1970s and including songs from films and musicals. Originally the personal collection of the singer Rita Williams, with later additions, it includes songs in various European languages and some in Afrikaans. Rita Williams sang with the Billy Cotton Club, among other groups, and made numerous recordings in the 1940s and 1950s. The songs are arranged alphabetically by title. Gerard Hoffnung Gerard Hoffnung est un musicien et dessinateur allemand, né le 22 mars 1925 à Berlin et mort le 25 septembre 1959 à Londres. Tubiste de formation, il est surtout connu pour ses œuvres humoristiques et ses caricatures. Non mobilisable en raison de ses origines germaniques, il est employé dans une laiterie avant de devenir professeur de dessin à la Stamford School en 1945. Il commence à publier des caricatures dans différents journaux et écrit des chroniques radiophoniques pour l'émission dominicale, One Minute Please. Il épouse en 1952 Annetta Bennett, qui veillera à la promotion de l'œuvre de son époux après sa mort prématurée. Hoffnung meurt en effet d'une hémorragie cérébrale en 1959 à 34 ans, après avoir occupé deux décennies à une quantité considérable d'activités comme - entre autres - celles de caricaturiste, tubiste, impresario, producteur de radio et conférencier, notamment pour les Oxford et Cambridge Union Societies. En tant que caricaturiste, il est l'auteur d'une série de recueils de dessins humoristiques se moquant gentiment des chefs d'orchestres et des instrumentistes. -

HANS KELLER ARCHIVE: working copy A1: Unpublished manuscripts, 1940-49 A1/1: Unpublished manuscripts, 1940-49: independent work This section contains all Keller’s unpublished manuscripts dating from the 1940s, apart from those connected with his collaboration with Margaret Phillips (see A1/2 below). With the exception of one pocket diary from 1938, the Archive contains no material prior to his arrival in Britain at the end of that year. After his release from internment in 1941, Keller divided himself between musical and psychoanalytical studies. As a violinist, he gained the LRAM teacher’s diploma in April 1943, and was relatively active as an orchestral and chamber-music player. As a writer, however, his principal concern in the first half of the decade was not music, but psychoanalysis. Although the majority of the musical writings listed below are undated, those which are probably from this earlier period are all concerned with the psychology of music. Similarly, the short stories, poems and aphorisms show their author’s interest in psychology. Keller’s notes and reading-lists from this period indicate an exhaustive study of Freudian literature and, from his correspondence with Margaret Phillips, it appears that he did have thoughts of becoming a professional analyst. At he beginning of 1946, however, there was a decisive change in the focus of his work, when music began to replace psychology as his principal subject. It is possible that his first (accidental) hearing of Britten’s Peter Grimes played an important part in this change, and Britten’s music is the subject of several early articles. -
