MILENA MILEVA BLAŽIĆ Somentor: DOC. DR. BARBARA ZORMAN SKRIVNOST IZ KELLSA – ANIMIRANI FILM IN SLIKANICA DIPLOMSKO DELO LJUBLJANA, 2018 IZVLEČEK Diplomsko delo obravnava animirani film Skrivnost iz Kellsa [The Secret of Kells] ter literarno adaptacijo v slikaniški obliki. KLJUČNE BESEDE: slikanica, animirani film, literarna analiza, medmedijska analiza, intertekstualnost I ABSTRACT The thesis concentrates on animated movie The Secret of Kells and its literary adaptation in a form of a picture book. The thesis concentrates mostly on the differences (if they exist) between stories that are introduced by two different types of media. For this reason the theoretical part consists of presentation of the key concepts, which is followed by literary and intermedia theory. Literary theory is based on the work of Max Lüthi, The European Folktale and the basis for intermedia theory is narratology as presented by Matevž Rudolf. Both, animated movie as well as picture book, are founded on historic and mythological elements, therfore a chapter on intertextuality, based on the work of Marko Juvan, is included as well. In the empirical part, the animated movie and picture book The Secret of Kells are analyzed, theory is aplicated to the case and both works are compared. Even though both works were presented in the 2009 by same authors, some differences exist between both works that are presented through different media. Those differences are presented in the following thesis. KEY WORDS: picture book, animated movie, literary analysis, intermedia analysis, intertextuality II KAZALO VSEBINE 1. The film, which is set in the early ninth-century monastic settlement of Kells, is based on a concept which Moore had been exploring a decade earlier while a student of animation at Ballyfermot Senior College in Dublin in 1999. With his co-director Nora Twomey, Moore and the Cartoon Saloon studio have achieved international acclaim for their work, including nominations in the Best Animated Feature Film category at the Oscars for The Secret of Kells in 2010 and for Song of the Sea in 2015. More recently, Twomey’s The Breadwinner (2017), which is set in Afghanistan and stylistically encompasses a more naturalistic and real- world look, also received an Academy nomination for Best Animated Feature in 2018. Moore is currently co-directing a third animated feature, Wolfwalkers, a mythic tale set in Kilkenny that is inspired by local history and legends and is due for release in late 2020. The implication, perhaps, was that it needed to be tamed. In 1649, Oliver Cromwell’s New Model Army invaded Ireland on behalf of the Commonwealth of England, leading to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Irish people. The Army also appointed professional hunters to cull the country’s wolves. • The Secret of Kells
------------------------------------------------------------------- The Secret of Kells Introduction The Secret of Kells is a visual delight that is sure to inspire. Set in 9th Century Ireland, the genre mixes fantasy and adventure alongside history, cleverly using the story behind the Book of Kells. The hand drawn 2D artwork used in most of the film mirrors beautifully the handcraft used to scribe and decorate the manuscripts. This film has everything in it. Action and fantasy are cleverly woven into the historical events that surround this film. It offers a creative route into Celtic history and the Viking threat. This film demonstrates the importance of art and visual culture in severely difficult times. I would recommend that children know a bit of background about the Book of Kells before viewing this film and we’ve supplied some information to get you started. OFF THE SHELF North Olympic Library System 2210 South Peabody Street Port Angeles, WA 98362 RELEASE: November 27, 2018 DATE: December 5, 2018 COLUMNIST: Liz Duval, Customer Service Specialist RE: Animated Films for Adults ATTACHED: Liz_Duval.jpg les_triplettes21.jpg Song_of_the_Sea-cover.jpg FantasticMrFoxPhotobyWesAnderson.jpg Animation is not just for kids! Adults who love film, visual arts, or stories that are not traditional Hollywood fare, can find real gems in NOLS’ collection of animated films. These are some suggestions for animated movies with exceptional artistic merit -- in fact nine of them have been nominated for Academy Awards. France is one of the top producers of animation, showcasing unique versions of traditional hand drawn animation, an art form that is nearly extinct because of the time and cost associated. The Triplets of Belleville has a freaky surrealist style that makes it totally unique and the jazz soundtrack will have you tapping your toes. In The Red Turtle, lush landscapes overwhelm the viewer. Stop-motion is another exceptionally time intensive method of animation. Tiny “puppets” or figurines are built, costumed, and given multiple heads or faces for different expressions. Each frame of the film is actually a photograph, and between each frame the puppets are moved. This is the case for Fantastic Mr. Fox, which intentionally doesn’t use any digital smoothing to cover the jerkiness of the movement. Because of that, you can feel the handmade quality of everything on screen, a warm and quirky sensibility that could only be Director Wes Anderson’s (he returned to stop motion with his latest film, Isle of Dogs).
