Fulda International Youth Summit 2018 FULDA INTERNATIONAL YOUTH SUMMIT 2018 Bilingual Summer Camp in Fulda / Hesse Dates 29.07.2018 – 04.08.2018 Age Group 12 – 17 years old Accommodation Homestay accommodation in host families Duration 7 days / 6 nights Camp Languages English / German Group size 25 students minimum Benefits + Complete immersion through host family accommodation + Bilingual courses, workshops and free-time activities + Focus on intercultural exchange + Get to know Germany intensely The Fulda International Youth Summit 2018 offers its participants the opportunity of complete immersion in the German culture, when staying with selected local host families for seven days during which the summit is held. ASTUR as coordinator of the summit can guarantee that from the experiences, gained during the summit and while living together with a “new” family, participants will establish lasting friendships, learn about the German / Central European lifestyle, get to know cuisine and history, get a glimpse of political and economic contacts and enjoy themselves during numerous free-time activities. All in all, every summit participant will gain an unforgettable experience, owed to the combination of language classes, innovative exchange programmes and immediate contact with a foreign culture. The summit programme will focus on the distinctive cultural, historical and technical backgrounds drawn from its location in Fulda, providing new insights for our international guests. They will receive first-hand lessons about Germany, its culture, way of life as well as the mind-set of its people, in order to understand – for example – what “made in Germany” means not only technically but psychologically. Through signing up for the summit, German students will be able to get to know peers from all over the world and learn about all the cultural idiosyncrasies which can be found on the planet – all this without having to travel the globe. For the majority of educational elements, students will be able to join workshops and find solutions for the given tasks in working together in small groups. This has proven to be the best teaching method to learn, exchange views and make friends at the same time. English and German workshops are another fundamental part of the Fulda International Youth Summit. Lessons will be designed in a motivational and encouraging fashion by certified teaching staff. Fulda / Rhön – The heart of Germany Fulda is located in central Germany and is making a name for itself as buzzing university town and sought-after venue for international conventions. It is home to many technology firms and leading businesses. Outside the town the slopes of the Rhön, the highest mountain range in the state of Hesse, rise gently, attracting locals and tourists alike to go hiking, skiing or to find peace and quiet within its vast forests. Visitors find beautiful landscapes as well as cultural heritage sties all across the mountain range, which stretches over the Federal States of Bavaria and Thuringia as well. Shortly after the German reunification, the Rhön was awarded the status of biosphere reserve by the UNESCO. • Defense at the Forward Edge of the Battle Or Rather in the Depth? Different Approaches to Implement NATO’S Operation Plans by the Alliance Partners, 1955-1988
Journal of Military and Strategic VOLUME 15, ISSUE 3, 2014 Studies Defense at the Forward Edge of the Battle or rather in the Depth? Different approaches to implement NATO’s operation plans by the alliance partners, 1955-1988 LTC Helmut R. Hammerich Military historians love studying battles. For this purpose, they evaluate operation plans and analyze how these plans were executed on the battlefield. The battle history of the Cold War focuses first and foremost on the planning for the nuclear clash between NATO and the Warsaw Pact. Although between 1945 and 1989-90 the world saw countless hot wars on the periphery of the Cold War, the “Cold World War,” as the German historian Jost Dülffer termed it, is best examined through the operational plans of the military alliances for what would have been World War Three. To conduct such an analysis we must consider Total War under nuclear conditions. Analyzing the war planning, however, is far from easy. The main difficulty lies in access to the files. The records of both the Warsaw Pact and NATO are still largely classified and therefore relatively inaccessible. Nor is access to the archives in Moscow two decades after glasnost and perestroika at all encouraging. At the request of historians, NATO has begun to declassify some of its key documents. Nonetheless, the specific details of the nuclear operational planning will continue to remain inaccessible to historians for the foreseeable future. As an alternative, historians then are forced to rely on collateral documents in the various national archives or on the compilations of ©Centre of Military and Strategic Studies, 2014 ISSN : 1488-559X VOLUME 15, ISSUE 3, 2014 diverse oral history projects.

  • The Daily Life of the Village and Country Jews in Hessen from Hitler's Ascent to Power to November 1938
The Daily Life of the Village and Country Jews in Hessen from Hitler's Ascent to Power to November 1938 Menahem Kaufman Introduction This article deals with Jewish life in the state of Hessen (Volksstaat Hessen) in the district of Hessen-Nassau (part of Prussia at that time) and in the district of Kurhessen and Waldeck during the Weimar period. We may surmise that patterns of Jewish life in southern and western parts of Germany during the period in question did not differ strikingly from those in Hessen. A small number of Jewish families lived in some of the villages in the region; they were either too few in number to constitute a community, or managed to establish small though organized communities within their own synagogue. In small towns with several dozen Jewish families, local communities sponsored a number of communal institutions, which functioned quite well before 1933, and made efforts to maintain their patterns of communal life even during the period around which this article revolves. The present study draws upon a number of sources: first, the original documentary material preserved in the archives of the villages and small towns1; secondly, publications that discuss the Jews in various localities and districts of Hessen; and, thirdly, letters and oral testimonies of Jewish Holocaust survivors and of several non-Jews. Some of these testimonies were published in Germany, mostly in the 1970s and 1980s2, and, despite efforts to 1 Part of the documentation can be found in the collection compiled by the author, dealing with the life of the Jews in small communities.
