ASTUR as coordinator of the summit can guarantee that from the experiences, gained during the summit and while living together with a “new” family, participants will establish lasting friendships, learn about the German / Central European lifestyle, get to know cuisine and history, get a glimpse of political and economic contacts and enjoy themselves during numerous free-time activities. All in all, every summit participant will gain an unforgettable experience, owed to the combination of language classes, innovative exchange programmes and immediate contact with a foreign culture. The summit programme will focus on the distinctive cultural, historical and technical backgrounds drawn from its location in Fulda, providing new insights for our international guests. They will receive first-hand lessons about Germany, its culture, way of life as well as the mind-set of its people, in order to understand – for example – what “made in Germany” means not only technically but psychologically. Through signing up for the summit, German students will be able to get to know peers from all over the world and learn about all the cultural idiosyncrasies which can be found on the planet – all this without having to travel the globe. For the majority of educational elements, students will be able to join workshops and find solutions for the given tasks in working together in small groups. This has proven to be the best teaching method to learn, exchange views and make friends at the same time. English and German workshops are another fundamental part of the Fulda International Youth Summit. Lessons will be designed in a motivational and encouraging fashion by certified teaching staff.

What to expect from Fulda International Youth Summit 2018

Arrival and Accommodation

Arrivals to the Fulda International Youth Summit 2018 are scheduled for Sunday, 29 July 2018. Participants may either be taken to their host families by their parents or they arrive individually in Fulda by train. When you decide to travel by plane, choose Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) as your destination. From there, you can take the train to Fulda (ICE, travel time approx. 1h) and have your host family pick you up in Fulda; or you book transfer service from the airport to Fulda with ASTUR when registering as a summit participant. Depending on your age, if you have booked a UM service (UM = Unaccompanied Minor) with your airline, you should also book the UM service for an extra fee additional to the transfer to the camp as early as possible with us, as airport checks and procedures are long and complicated. When you travel with a whole group of participants by coach, your group’s host families will all meet you at a central meeting point The same applies for departure day. Students may be picked up by their parents at their host families’ homes or they are taken to the Fulda train station. When you travel by plane, you may either have your host family take you to the train station in Fulda and take the train to Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) yourself (ICE, travel time approx. 1h) or you book transfer service from Fulda to the airport with ASTUR when registering for the summit. When you travel together with an entire group, your host families will take you to the central meeting point to see you off. Private Accommodation with a host family In a homestay, our international guests get first-hand experience of life in a German household with its every-day culture and typical way of living. Your host family will keep you well fed, providing full board accommodation. You will begin the day with a typical breakfast in the morning. For the afternoon you will be given a packed lunch by your host family and in the evening the family will cook a hot meal. Feel free to let your host family know what you like and don’t like to eat, so that they can adjust their menus. That way you will get to know the German cuisine en passant. Please let us know in your application whether you are a vegetarian, vegan or have any other dietary requirement. We will do our best to accommodate your preferences and cater for your individual needs. It is strictly forbidden for under-age summit participants to leave camp or their host families’ homes at night without being accompanied by a group leader or member of the host family! Local summit participants, who live in or around Fulda, are invited to host a student from overseas – as long as the families match the standards of DIN EN 14804, the “European Standard of Requirements for Language Study Tour Providers”. Transport during the Summit Several visits and activities require transfer services. In order to get from A to B over the course of the Summit camp you can in most cases rely on your host family to take you to the various meeting points – and pick you up there in the afternoon. Should a meeting point be located within walking

distance from your host family’s home, you will receive instructions on how to get there and walk together with participants who are accommodated in your neighbourhood.

Workshops and Study Programme

Over the course of the summit all participants explore topics of socio-political relevance, ranging from what daily life is like across the world to the German reunification, protection of the environment or technological progress. Lesson venues will vary according to the questions which are being discussed. After the official opening address of the Fulda International Youth Summit by the mayor of Fulda you will get a first impression of your summit destination. Being guided through the historic baroque town in small groups, you will discover the most important sights and selected local businesses. Over the succeeding days, several excursions are available to you, with destinations ranging from unique landscapes at the biosphere reserve Rhön to fascinating industrial companies, which have successfully entered the technological era of Industry 4.0. Workshop “Daily Live in Germany”

The world may agree: thinking about Germany invokes pictures of overweight men in lederhosen with a plate of sauerkraut in one hand and a pork knuckle in the other. Ordinary Germans, however, would not really fit this image – even though sauerkraut is delicious! So, let’s change that old stereotype. When you take part in the workshop about daily life in Germany you will discover what it means to be a part of the German society, and what we like to eat apart from pork meat. The tour includes a visit to one of Fulda’s traditional bakeries. In fact, German bread is one of the most underrated delicacies in the world. Afterwards we will visit a coffee roasting house. This way you will get a real taste of German cuisine.

Workshop “German History”

Nowadays, Germany belongs to the world leaders in the fields of technology, science and economic strength. Its people live in safety, wealth and peace. It is hard to imagine that only about 30 years ago, a very different era came to a close. From today’s perspective it feels like an aeon ago that the world was divided in East and West, each block threatening to wage war against the other. In those days, there was one boundary line between the two systems. It ran across Germany to split the nation and the world. At Point Alpha, where our workshop will take place, the people would reach the end of their (Western) world. The summit workshop about Germany’s history aims to make all participants aware of this chapter of the past.

Workshop “German Nature”

As soon as you leave the city of Fulda to the East, you literally enter a fascinating landscape, leading up to the low mountain range called Rhön. It received “Biosphere Reserve” status by UNESCO in 1991, which made the public aware of its hidden treasures. Our nature workshop aims to discover those hidden environmental gems. During the workshop we will explore topics ranging from biodiversity and protection of the environment to sustainability across all mountain habitats – open fields, forests, lakes and hills.

Taking a close look at how nature is developing along Germany’s “Green Belt” provides the perfect pivotal point between this workshop and the summit’s “German History” workshop.

Workshop “Innovation in Germany”

Subject 1: Let’s build our own Wonderbots Have your own Wonderbot come to life in this creative construction workshop. Use parts of scrap metal to construct your Wonderbot any way you choose. Use LED, small locomotor systems and hinges to design a robot of your own design. Whether you want to work with screws, glue or soldering tin is entirely up to you. When drafting your robot schematics, don’t forget to leave room for the robotic wiring. You decide if your Wonderbot should glow in the dark, be equipped with wheels or be able to walk. Pack your robot with high-tech components and construct your wondrous machine. Be the ingenious scientist, you always knew you are! Subject 2: Fight of the Sumo-Bots Do you consider yourself not only to be a skilled engineer of battle machines but also an expert in programming language? Then it is time for you to enter the tournament of the Sumo-Bot workshop. Use one of Lego’s Mindstorms sets to create your own Sumo-Bot and compete against your opponents for the grand prize. During the workshop you will face arduous construction tasks, as you have to create a worthy Sumo- Robot. You will have to make numerous decisions on how to design your robot. Which shape is best suited to ensure victory in the tournament? And, finally, your Sumo-Bots have to be programmed to perform well in the ring. Are you ready to compete? Then head off to your workbench. The tournament awaits. Visit to a German Industry 4.0 company A comprehensive overview of Germany, the host of the International Youth Summit, would not be complete without this innovation workshop. The participants will be taken behind the scenes of FFT Group, an internationally operating company specialised in engineering and technological development. Intelligent, inter-connected robotics systems embedded in state of the art working systems (Industry 4.0) push the limits in the development of new machinery, from automotive to aeronautical engineering. Furthermore, a visit to the vocational training centre in Fulda (BBZ) will give insights into the world of work. The participants will be shown current training and educational opportunities as well as an outlook of what the world holds in store for them after their graduation from school.

Good to know

Before the summit begins, you will receive detailed information about the programme. Please note that your regular health insurance will most likely not cover all treatment costs which may occur while you are in Germany. We, therefore, generally recommend purchasing foreign health insurance as well as accident and liability insurance. You can purchase these insurances without hassle through us. We offer a complete insurance pack for the entire duration of the summit. If you need a visa to enter Germany, you will be required to show proof that you have purchased a respective insurance in order to apply for the visa. It’s best to talk with us directly about visa regulations. We’re always happy to help.
