The conference aims, in particular, at fostering the collaboration between the Austrian and Italian mathematical communities. The meeting takes place in the conference facilities of the European Academy Bozen-Bolzano. The scientific program starts on Monday, September 22, 2003, at 9:00 a.m. in the Auditorium of the European Academy; it continues until the afternoon of Friday, September 26. The conference language is English. Technical equipment of the lecturing halls: All rooms are equipped with overhead projectors, laptop, beamer, DVD- and CD-drives, flipchart and pin board. Internet access during conference: Computer terminals are available for participants of the conference, located at the Library of the European Academy during its opening hours (9:00 – 18:00). Lunch and dinner: There are numerous restaurants and pubs in the center of Bolzano, in the close vicinity of the conference location. A list of restaurants is being handed to you with the conference folder. In addition, there is the possibility to have lunch at the cafeteria of the Free University of Bolzano at a moderate price. Entering the cafeteria and paying requires that you have a Guest Card. In case you ordered a Guest Card with your registration, you will find it, together with directions, in your conference folder. 10 Coffee breaks: Coffee is served free of charge to participants on Monday, 10:00 – 10:15 and 16:00 – 16:15, Tuesday, 9:30 – 9:45 and 16:00 – 16:15, Wednesday, 9:30 – 9:45, Thursday, 9:30 – 9:45 and 15:45 – 16:00, Friday, 9:30 – 9:45. In addition, a coffee shop is at your disposal all day, located in the ground floor of the EURAC building. Local transportation: You can get pre-paid combination tickets for bus, train and city bus for 5, 10, and 25 Euros as well as weekly tickets for 25 Euros (us- able for 30 bus trips in the region). Liebe Kolleginnen und Kollegen! Lieber Hellmuth! Seit nunmehr 31 Jahren hält Hellmuth Stachel der Technischen Universität Wien die Treue. Heute, kurz nach seinem 69. Geburtstag, können wir Ihm zur Befreiung von den Dienstpflichten gratulieren. Seine Pflichten und viele andere Tätigkeiten hat er in all diesen Jahren mit größter Gewissenhaftigkeit erfüllt, sei es • als international anerkannter Forscher, • als erfolgreicher Buchautor, • als Begründer, Herausgeber und Mitherausgeber von Fachzeitschriften, • als Organisator von Konferenzen, • als allseits geschätzter Lehrender, • als Koordinator internationaler Kooperationen, • als Institutsvorstand, • als Studienkommissionsvorsitzender, • als Vorsitzender der Fachkommission Mathematik, • als Vertreter der Professoren im Senat und in vielen anderen Funktionen mehr. Werfen wir aber zunächst einen Blick auf seinen Lebensweg: Hellmuth Stachel wurde am 6. Oktober 1942 in Graz geboren. Sein Vater, ein Volks- schullehrer, ist einige Monate nach seiner Geburt als Soldat im zweiten Weltkrieg gefallen. Stachel besuchte die Volksschule in Trofaiach und das Bundes- Realgymnasium in Leoben. Nach Absolvierung der Reifeprüfung begann er das Lehramtsstudium der Mathematik und Darstellenden Geometrie an der Universität und an der Technischen Hochschule in Graz. Der Abschluss dieses Studiums fällt in das Jahr 1965. Es folgte ein Doktoratsstudium an der Universität Graz, in dessen Rahmen Stachel seine Dissertation zum Thema Die beiden Lieschen Geraden-Kugel-Transformationen in synthetischer Behandlung bei Fritz Hohenberg verfasste. Im Jahre 1969 wurde Stachel zum Dr. phil. in Mathe- matik mit den Nebenfächern Astronomie und Philosophie promoviert.
