Steve M. Slaby Award 2018 for Outstanding Contributions to Geometry and Graphics Education and Research The Steve M. Slaby Award is the highest honor that our society awards. The award is given “. . . to an individual for his/her accomplishment, life achievement, and very outstanding, leading and influential stature in the Graphics Education field, especially at the international level . . . ”. The Award is named after Steve M. Slaby, Professor Emeritus at the Princeton University (1922 – 2008), who was an outstanding scholar in graphics science and a driving force in the spread and betterment of education and research in the field, and who by this best epitomizes such an award. Let us first recognize those individuals who have received this distinguished award in the past: 2014 – Manfred Husty, University of Innsbruck, Austria 2012 – Emiko Tsutsumi, Otsuma Women’s University, Tokyo, Japan 2010 – Paul Zsombor-Murray, McGill University, Montreal, Canada 2008 – Gunter Weiss, TU Dresden, Germany 2006 – Kenjiro Suzuki, NIAD-UE, Japan 2004 – Hellmuth Stachel, Vienna University of Technology, Austria 1997 – Andries van Dam, Brown University, USA 1995 – Gary Bertoline, Purdue University, USA For the Award 2018, an international jury of ISGG members decided that Prof. Otto Röschel is the winner of the Steve Slaby Award 2018. Otto Röschel is a distinguished teacher and researcher with a broad field of geometric re- search topics, including technical applications. He has been full professor working at Graz University of Technology since 1988. He has conducted many lecture courses in the field of geometry. He has supervised over 25 diploma theses as well as PhD theses and all four former PhD students of Otto Röschel are now active in geometry and graphics research and education. Otto Röschel has studied many different topics in geometry including Flexible polyhedra, Rational curves, surfaces and motions, Geometric Origami, Non-Euclidean geometry, includ- ing numerous publications. Otto Röschel has contributed to ISGG as a vice president for the region Europe/Near East/Africa from 2009 to 2012, and as its president from 2013 to 2016. Under his presidency, the society’s bylaws were thoroughly revised. He also provided great help to the organizers of the ICGG conferences. Otto Röschel’s contributions to geometry and graphics are of utmost importance to Aus- trian geometry and are highly appreciated by that community of scholars. (Over the years, he has actively contributed to the development of Descriptive Geometry curricula for secondary schools. Not only has he spent hours in workgroups and commissions, he has also published commentary and elaborative explanations on curricula, developed exemplary assignment ex- ercises and presented his findings at local educational conferences.) And, last not least, Otto Röschel is always helpful and eager to share his experience and his teaching material with others.
