Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. _______________________________ Kate Jordan !2 Abstract Over the last forty years, feminist discourses have made considerable impact on the way that we understand women’s historical agency. Linda Nochlin’s question, ‘why have there been no great women artists’ challenged assumptions about the way we consider women in art history and Amanda Vickery brought to the fore questions of women’s authority within ‘separate spheres’ ideology. The paucity of research on women’s historical contributions to architecture, however, is a gap that misrepresents their significant roles. This thesis explores a hitherto overlooked group of buildings designed by and for women; nineteenth and twentieth century English convents. Many of these sites were built according to the rules of communities whose ministries extended beyond contemplative prayer and into the wider community, requiring spaces that allowed lay-women to live and work within the convent walls but without disrupting the real and imagined fabric of monastic traditions - spaces that were able to synthesise contemporary domestic, industrial and institutional architecture with the medieval cloister. The demanding specifications for these highly innovative and complex spaces were drawn up, overwhelmingly, by nuns. While convents might be read as spaces which operated at the interstices between different architectures, I will argue they were instead conceived as sites that per- formed varying and contradictory functions simultaneously.

I started The Dorset Family out knowing very little apart from the fact that my father, and his father, came from The majority of the charts and notes in this volume relate to the Dorset family and Southampton in Hampshire. I quickly found that there were far more references to the show the known Pitfold/Pitfield descendants of Robert Pytfolde of Allington, Dorset name Pitfield in the county of Dorset than anywhere else, and I established that my (1516-1586). Details of the origins of this family are included in the Dorset Family own Southampton Pitfields originated in Dorset. Preface. Soon after starting on my genealogical quest I made contact with Michael Pitfield from Buckinghamshire who had already been doing some work on the Pitfield family. He Petfield, Peatfield, Patefield, Pilfield, Pilfold etc had established that most of the Pitfield lines are descended from a Robert Pitfold of There are a number of family names, in various parts of Britain, that sound similar Allington in Dorset who had ten sons and who died in 1586. Michael and I worked to Pitfield. Some of these names are well established and in some cases their use together for some years on the Pitfield lines and found that we were both descendants predates the name Pitfold, that later evolved into Pitfield. On occasion Pitfield might of Sebastian Pitfold, the youngest of Robert’s sons.

Scoles – A Centenary Tribute A collection of four biographical sketches of this Pastor and Ecclesiastical Architect Collated by Richard Barton in 2020 Canon Scoles in 1893 Our Church Architect – Canon A. J. C. Scoles (1844-1920) by Michael Huscroft Alexander Joseph Cory Scoles was born in Hammersmith, London, on 30th November 1844, the third son of Joseph John Scoles and Harriet Cory. His father, J. J. Scoles, was a well-known architect, born of Catholic parents in 1798 and educated at the Franciscan school at Baddesley Clinton, near Birmingham, during the Napoleonic Wars. Joseph was apprenticed to another Catholic architect, John Ireland, who did much work for Dr John Milner, Vicar Apostolic of the Western District from 1803-1826. J. J. Scoles designed numerous Catholic churches, notably: 1 the Jesuit college chapel of St. Peter at Stonyhurst and the Jesuit church of the Immaculate Conception, Farm Street, London – he also designed the college church of St Mary at Prior Park, which was completed over twenty-five years later by his son, Alexander. After completing his general education in Bruges, Belgium, in 1862, Alexander began to serve articles with his father, but the latter died the following year. He completed his articles under Samuel Joseph Nichol, a relative and former pupil and successor to his father. On completion of his pupillage, Alexander first practised on his own account and then, briefly, with his cousin, John Myrie Cory. In 1873 his cousin left England to join an architectural practice in Shanghai, China, and, shortly afterwards it seems, Alexander entered the seminary at Prior Park, Bath, to study for the priesthood.

    St Joseph's on the Quay*, Bridgwater by Tony Woolrich The chapel of St Joseph of Arimathea, Gordon Terrace, had become too small for the congregation by 1878, and plans were made to build a new church in the centre of the town. Land was purchased in December 1879 bounded by Binford Place and Chapel Street. The property along Binford place became the Presbytery and the part along Chapel Street became the site of the church. The tender for building was awarded to Mr Kitch of Salmon Parade. The foundation stone was laid on 25 October 1881, the church was opened on 22 June 1882. It cost £866 10 0. Mr Philip Hewett (1806-1888) was a major benefactor. A school was also built on land beside the new church and opened on 27 March 1883 with 18 pupils. In 1885 a community of the Sisters of Charity moved to premises in King Street and took over the education at the school until 1891. Site of St Joseph’s property. OS map, 25in. - 1 mile, 1880s The cottage next to the church later became the Parish Rooms, and the remainder of the cottages along Chapel Street became a laundry in 1888, where the sisters did washing for the town. It was later the site of the Co-operative store. The church comprises a chancel, nave and north chapel dedicated to St Joseph. The reredos under the east window takes the form of an arcade on either side of a monstrance throne with a tall Gothic canopy. A rood beam with figures was added to the chancel arch in 1890.

It also provides tools to help researchers trying to find out more about the history of accountancy firms through the individuals associated with those firms. The index was first published by the ICAEW Library & Information Service in January 2007 and will continue to be updated in the coming years.
