Obituaries and Other Biographical Notes/Profiles Arranged by Surname Obituaries and other biographical notes/profiles Arranged by surname September 2016 © ICAEW Library and Information Service This index has been developed by the ICAEW Library & Information Service to help genealogists who are tracing their family history to find out more about ancestors who were accountants. It also provides tools to help researchers trying to find out more about the history of accountancy firms through the individuals associated with those firms. The index was first published by the ICAEW Library & Information Service in January 2007 and will continue to be updated in the coming years. Sources The index was created by LIS staff who volunteered their time to index the obituaries and photographs included in a number of journals within the collection of the ICAEW Library & Information Service. The sources used to compile the current edition were: • A history of accountants in Ireland (ICAI, 1983) • A hundred years of accountancy (Begbie, Robinson, Cox & Knight - 1938) • Accountancy (1938-1965) • Associated Accountants' Journal (1905-1927, except February 1914) • Balance (1923-1925, except December 1925) • Centenary, 1882-1982 (Birmingham and West Midlands Society of Chartered Accountants, 1982) • British Accountants: A Biographical Sourcebook by Robert H. Parker (Arno Press, 1980) • Contra Green - Chartered Accountant Students' Society of London (1965-1967) • Dictionary of business biography- a biographical dictionary of business leaders active in Britain in the period 1860-1980 (Butterworths, 1984-1986) • Financial Circular (1896-1928, except for those issues missing from the ICAEW collection: December 1896, July 1898-October 1898, November 1898 -October 1899, November 1901-December 1903. • History of Accounting and Accountants, Appendix II (Ed. Richard Brown. Frank Cass & Co., 1968) • Incorporated Accountants' Journal (1889-1938) • Indian & Eastern Railway (October 1928-June 1929) • Institute of Book-Keepers' Journal (1920-1947) • Institute Newsletter and Information Bulletin (1964-1987) • The Accountant (1874-1965) • The Accountant Irish Supplement (1952-1955) • The Accountants' Journal - New Zealand (July 1945-July 1952, except for the issue of September 1945 which is missing from the ICAEW collection) • The Accountants' Magazine (1897-1947) • The first hundred years (Sheffield & District Society of Chartered Accountants, 1977) Page numbers in the index refer to the bound copies held by the ICAEW Library & Information Service and may differ from the collections of other Libraries. How do I obtain a copy of an obituary? The ICAEW Library & Information Service provides a photocopying and fax service and photocopies can be supplied by post or fax. Entries are free for ICAEW members and permitted users, but for all other users a charge of £5 plus VAT applies per entry. Please contact the LIS enquiry team by telephone on +44 (0)20 7920 8620 or by e-mail at [email protected] if you would like to obtain a photocopy of an obituary or biographical note/profile. Abbreviations The database uses the abbreviation NA to indicate where age at death is not applicable (usually where the entry is a biographical profile). Most of the abbreviations that you will come across in the index are for accountancy qualifications past and present. A selection of these are listed below for ease of reference. • Coventry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography
Coventry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography is the national record of people who have shaped British history, worldwide, from the Romans to the 21st century. The Oxford DNB (ODNB) currently includes the life stories of over 60,000 men and women who died in or before 2017. Over 1,300 of those lives contain references to Coventry, whether of events, offices, institutions, people, places, or sources preserved there. Of these, over 160 men and women in ODNB were either born, baptized, educated, died, or buried there. Many more, of course, spent periods of their life in Coventry and left their mark on the city’s history and its built environment. This survey brings together over 300 lives in ODNB connected with Coventry, ranging over ten centuries, extracted using the advanced search ‘life event’ and ‘full text’ features on the online site (www.oxforddnb.com). The same search functions can be used to explore the biographical histories of other places in the Coventry region: Kenilworth produces references in 229 articles, including 44 key life events; Leamington, 235 and 95; and Nuneaton, 69 and 17, for example. Most public libraries across the UK subscribe to ODNB, which means that the complete dictionary can be accessed for free via a local library. Libraries also offer 'remote access' which makes it possible to log in at any time at home (or anywhere that has internet access). Elsewhere, the ODNB is available online in schools, colleges, universities, and other institutions worldwide. Early benefactors: Godgifu [Godiva] and Leofric The benefactors of Coventry before the Norman conquest, Godgifu [Godiva] (d.

  • Former Fellows Biographical Index Part
Former Fellows of The Royal Society of Edinburgh 1783 – 2002 Biographical Index Part Two ISBN 0 902198 84 X Published July 2006 © The Royal Society of Edinburgh 22-26 George Street, Edinburgh, EH2 2PQ BIOGRAPHICAL INDEX OF FORMER FELLOWS OF THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF EDINBURGH 1783 – 2002 PART II K-Z C D Waterston and A Macmillan Shearer This is a print-out of the biographical index of over 4000 former Fellows of the Royal Society of Edinburgh as held on the Society’s computer system in October 2005. It lists former Fellows from the foundation of the Society in 1783 to October 2002. Most are deceased Fellows up to and including the list given in the RSE Directory 2003 (Session 2002-3) but some former Fellows who left the Society by resignation or were removed from the roll are still living. HISTORY OF THE PROJECT Information on the Fellowship has been kept by the Society in many ways – unpublished sources include Council and Committee Minutes, Card Indices, and correspondence; published sources such as Transactions, Proceedings, Year Books, Billets, Candidates Lists, etc. All have been examined by the compilers, who have found the Minutes, particularly Committee Minutes, to be of variable quality, and it is to be regretted that the Society’s holdings of published billets and candidates lists are incomplete. The late Professor Neil Campbell prepared from these sources a loose-leaf list of some 1500 Ordinary Fellows elected during the Society’s first hundred years. He listed name and forenames, title where applicable and national honours, profession or discipline, position held, some information on membership of the other societies, dates of birth, election to the Society and death or resignation from the Society and reference to a printed biography.

Ordered Spaces, Separate Spheres: Women and the Building of British Convents, 1829-1939 Kate Jordan University College London Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy I, Kate Jordan confirm that the work present- ed in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. _______________________________ Kate Jordan !2 Abstract Over the last forty years, feminist discourses have made considerable impact on the way that we understand women’s historical agency. Linda Nochlin’s question, ‘why have there been no great women artists’ challenged assumptions about the way we consider women in art history and Amanda Vickery brought to the fore questions of women’s authority within ‘separate spheres’ ideology. The paucity of research on women’s historical contributions to architecture, however, is a gap that misrepresents their significant roles. This thesis explores a hitherto overlooked group of buildings designed by and for women; nineteenth and twentieth century English convents. Many of these sites were built according to the rules of communities whose ministries extended beyond contemplative prayer and into the wider community, requiring spaces that allowed lay-women to live and work within the convent walls but without disrupting the real and imagined fabric of monastic traditions - spaces that were able to synthesise contemporary domestic, industrial and institutional architecture with the medieval cloister. The demanding specifications for these highly innovative and complex spaces were drawn up, overwhelmingly, by nuns. While convents might be read as spaces which operated at the interstices between different architectures, I will argue they were instead conceived as sites that per- formed varying and contradictory functions simultaneously.
