Gold Meets Golden began as a featured party leading in to the 2013 Golden Globe awards, honoring the athletes of the 2012 London Games. Specific Platform Goals for the following slate of events include an introduction of Rio’s Team USA to Hollywood, a Good Luck Send-off from Hollywood to these athletes, and a Timely Celebration of Equality in Sport. EVENTS SCHEDULE THE 2016 GOLDEN GLOBES PARTY GMG returns to the 2016 Golden Globe Awards on JANUARY 10, 2016. In a special event, veteran Olympians and 2016 returning and hopeful athletes will be greeted by Golden Globe nominees and winners and other Hollywood celebrities, sharing and recording special messages of Good Luck for the upcoming Games. 7 ROAD TO RIO 2016 HOLLYWOOD PREMIERES GMG will bring athletes and Olympians to a variety of red carpet premieres of films that focus on sports or competition. Special receptions will be held for attending athletes as an opportunity to interact with sponsors. Gold Meets Golden will be holding a special party and hospitality program for celebrities traveling to Rio for the Games. THE FOUNDATION POSITION MEDIA – IMAGES AND WORDS IN WOMEN’S SPORTS In 1994, the Women’s Sports Foundation issued “Words to Watch,” guidelines for treating male and female athletes equally in sports reporting and commentary. This publication was developed in response to a number of events in which media were criticized for sexist comments made during network broadcasts or in newspaper and magazine coverage of women’s sports. The guidelines were distributed to electronic and print media on the Foundation’s media list and by request. “Words to Watch” was adapted with permission of the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women in Sports, 1994. Section II of this publication remains as “Words to Watch.” In response to numerous questions and criticisms of the visual and narrative portrayal of female athletes on television and female athlete imagery appearing in print media, the Foundation has expanded its “Words to Watch” publication to incorporate imagery and to raise pertinent issues related to authentic and realistic reporting about and depiction of girls and women in sports and fitness. “Images to Watch” was added to this publication in October of 1995 and the main title revised accordingly (see Section I of this publication). This publication also includes a new section written specifically for female athletes who are asked to participate in electronic and print media advertising or other projects. This section (see Section III) was designed to educate athletes about their rights as models and to provide ethics guidelines for decision-making related to their participation in advertising and other visual and written programming regarding how they are portrayed.

    Maggie’s Activity Pack Name __________________________ Date ___________________________ Lauryn Williams: Already A Medal Winner! 1 Many Olympic athletes have more than one medal. Some athletes like swimmer Michael Phelps or speedskater Bonnie Blair have several medals. But each of these athletes competes in a specific sport that is held in the Summer or Winter Olympics. This year several American athletes are trying to win medals in both the Summer and Winter Olympics. Lauryn Williams is one of these athletes. 2 During the London Summer Olympic Games, Lauryn won a gold medal as a runner during a track and field relay. She also competed as a hurdler. But London wasn’t her first Olympics. She represented the United States in track and field events during the 2004 and 2008 Summer Games, too. Now this talented athlete is in Russia. 3 While some people may be surprised that Lauryn is competing in a different sport in a different season, Lauryn sees a connection between these sports. Her training in track helps in her current role on the two-person bobsled team. She says that she needed speed and strength to be successful as a runner and hurdler. She uses those same skills as a brakeperson on her team. Lauryn says she needs to be able to run fast and then give the sled a strong push before jumping on the sled. She and her teammate will ride down an icy course that twists and turns. She also knows what it is like to feel nervous at the Olympics. Hopefully, her training and experience will put her on the 4 medal platform.
