Inspiró a muchos españoles. She married two Spanish Infantes. Maria Teresa and Pedro Carlos had a son, Sebas- tián Gabriel, born in Brazil in 1811. For seven years thousands of Spaniards considered her to be the uncrowned Queen Consort of their country. The Princess of Beira’s life was noteworthy on account of political upheavals and wars during the long transition between the Old and New Regimes. Like all royal figures of the time, she was in the eye of the storm. Her case was far more dramatic than that of most princesses because she was committed to the political movement that gradually lost ground over the years. Maria Teresa of Braganza’s life was full of contrasts. She spent thirty-nine years living in splendor at the Royal Courts in Lisbon, Madrid, and the exotic Court in Rio de Janeiro. On the other hand, she fled Napoleon’s troops when they invaded Portugal, was taken to southern Spain as a hostage by the Spanish government during the Liberal Triennium, spent two years running from pillar to post in the midst of civil wars in Portugal and Spain. When she was in her middle for- ties Maria Teresa crossed France incognito in a cloak and dagger trip when she was wanted by the police. The Princess of Beira lived surrounded by guards for six years while sharing Don Carlos’s house arrest. In 1848 Maria Teresa crossed the Italian Peninsula one step ahead of disturbances, and was held at gunpoint for a few hours by revolutionaries near Venice. For twenty-six years she lived modestly in Trieste supported by half a dozen sympathetic royal families be- cause her property had been confiscated by triumphant liberal governments. In spite of the twists and turns, Maria Teresa was always surrounded by a devoted staff that shared her beliefs. During the convulsions of the XIX century the Princess of Beira was identi- fied with tradition and the institutional church. She supported the men in her family in Portugal and Spain who defended the old order, and mentored two generations of Spanish Infantes in exile. As an elderly woman, she was the unof- ficial leader of Carlism. The Princess of Beira inspired many Spaniards. The most important documentation for this study are texts written by the pro- tagonistas, especially some two hundred letters by Braganzas, Bourbons, and Habsburgs, and the ones they received. The letters include correspondence with Gregory XVI and Pius IX. Some missives have been published; most have not, and were found in seventeen archives in Europe and Brazil. The most impor- tant institution for this work was the Historical Archive at Loyola, in Azpeitia (Guipúzcoa). Other texts written by the Spanish Royal Family were very useful, such as diaries, chronicles of travels, manifestos, and the summary of the only joint interview given by Carlos V and the Princess of Beira. Wills contributed concrete data. Texts written by members of the staff of the proscribed branch of the Spanish Royal Family, and chronicles and memoirs published by people in contact with European Royal Courts for long periods were also fundamen- tal. The press of the time in six European countries and in Brazil (over thirty newspapers) turned out to be very valuable. PALAVRAS CHAVE: Prática Vocal - D. Abstract: The research “The Manor House in Lisbon and in Rio de Janeiro: Interior’s Anatomy” started in 2012, promoted by Portuguese and Brazilian researchers. It resulted in a common digital platform, in order to register, study and disclose Portuguese-Brazilian heritage, in a perspective of pedagogical and informative action. The project proposes the study of manor houses of the nobility and high bourgeoisie of the XVII, XVIII and XIX centuries, addressing various aspects of their interiors, at first in two regions of the cultural and artistic Portuguese-Brazilian world. This study has an original character as it proposes the integrated evaluation of the spatial organization of domestic spaces, their decoration, appliances and objects, as well as the daily practices of Portuguese and Brazilian elites, in their mutual influences, in an evolutionary approach during three centuries. The digital platform enlarges the reach of the project, allowing the sharing of information and quickly and easily disclosing the results of the research.

Journal of Global Theatre History Volume 1, Number 1, 2016, pp. 78-92 Maria Helena Werneck and Maria João Brilhante Art and Trade in a Postcolonial Context: In Search of the Theatre Routes Linking Brazil and Portugal (1850 – 1930) Abstract Between 1850 and 1930, the transatlantic voyages between Portugal and Brazil made by Portuguese and Brazilian theatre companies reflected the post-colonial cultural relations between the two countries. The theatrical activity produced in Portugal provided parameters for the organization of companies and quite durable acting models in Brazil, where many theatres relied on foreign companies' repertoires. However, especially after the republic was proclaimed in 1889, such transatlantic theatre was perceived in Brazil as representing the old aesthetics questioned by the European avant-garde movements of the early twentieth century. Two case studies illustrate different artistic and economic dynamics of tours, seen as translocal exchanges leading either to tradition or modernization. The former looks at the Portuguese actress Adelina Abranches, who was concerned about the financial health of her touring company, whereas the latter focuses on the Brazilian actress Cinira Polônio, who wished to be in tune with the new times of theatrical activity in Europe. Authors Maria Helena Werneck is Full Professor at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro, where she teaches Theatre History, Brazilian Theatre and Literature in undergraduate and post- graduate courses. From 2008 to 2010, she was coordinator of a binational research project including universities in Brazil (UNIRIO and USP) and in Portugal (University of Lisbon). She published a book about Machado de Assis' biographies (The man in print, EdUERJ, 2008), and some works about Brazilian history on stage, during the decades of 1930, 1940 and 1950 in Rio.

To his social superiors Dorn Oba was half-crazy; to Rio's slaves, freedmen and free men of colour, he was revered as a royal prince, the Prince of the People.
