Vol. 32.1: 113-60 jason protass A Geographic History of Song-Dynasty Chan Buddhism: The Decline of the Yunmen Lineage abstract: For a century during China’s Northern Song era, the Yunmen Chan lineage, one of several such regional networks, rose to dominance in the east and north and then abruptly disappeared. Whereas others suggested the decline was caused by a doctri- nal problem, this essay argues that the geopolitics of the Song–Jin wars were the pri- mary cause. The argument builds upon a dataset of Chan abbots gleaned from Flame Records. A chronological series of maps shows that Chan lineages were regionally based. Moreover, Song-era writers knew of regional differences among Chan lin- eages and suggested that regionalism was part of Chan identity: this corroborates my assertion. The essay turns to local gazetteers and early-Southern Song texts that re- cord the impacts of the Song–Jin wars on monasteries in regions associated with the Yunmen lineage. The Imperial Household Department (IHD) is one of these important organizations, and is a major one. The major sources of Qing income were land tax, salt tax, and customs duties. IHD revenue came from tariffs and salt monopoly, far beyond its income from agricultural land rents. In the Qianlong era, IHD bondservants made up most of the tariff administration and the salt administration. These personal also handled the IHD trade in ginseng and other goods, as well as interest bearing loans to merchants from the IHD treasury, which were issued through the Changlu and Lianghuai salt administrations. If these officials were found to have committed a crime and were fined, or had their property confiscated, it would all go to the IHD. In the Qianlong period, every year the IHD treasury was ordered to move millions in funds to the Board of Revenue. Those millions were originally taxes that merchants submitted to the Board of Revenue through the IHD.

By comparing the differences in the Buddhist landscape between Scottish Kagyu Samye Ling Monastery and the Samye Ling Temple in Tibet, the article points out the former has three problems such as an inadequate Buddha-Hall, unbalanced distribution of Buddhist landscapes and incomplete Mandala landscape pattern. It is proposed that to enlarge Buddha-Hall and build out corridors for more circumambulations, and to construct new landscape in four directions to form a complete Buddhist pattern including Dvipa and Eight Small Continents. Tibetan Buddhism at Ri bo rtse lnga/Wutai shan in Modern Times Gray Tuttle Columbia University Abstract: This article examines the prominent role of Tibetan Buddhism at the major cult center of Mañjuśrī known as Ri bo rtse lnga or Wutai shan (sometimes spelled “Wutaishan”) in Shanxi Province, China. The late imperial presence of Tibetan Buddhism at Ri bo rtse lnga (fourteenth-twentieth centuries) has been studied, but the place of Tibetan Buddhism at Ri bo rtse lnga under the Republican government and the Communist regime has not previously been explored in detail. An examination of written sources and on-site investigations reveal that the twentieth century saw a major renewal of Tibetan Buddhist practice at Ri bo rtse lnga with a significant multi-ethnic following. The presence of ethnic Tibetan, Mongolian, and Chinese Tibetan Buddhists at this important Buddhist pilgrimage place has made Ri bo rtse lnga one of the pre-eminent sites of religious and cultural exchange in China. Many monasteries on the mountain now practice the Dge lugs pa tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Two ethnic Chinese who were most influential in spreading the Dge lugs pa tradition of Tibetan Buddhism in China had particularly strong connections with the mountain: Dharma-master Fazun and Nenghai Lama. One of Nenghai’s closest disciples, Dharma-master Qinghai, played a major role in reviving the practice of Tibetan Buddhism at Wutai shan since the end of the Cultural Revolution. Yuanzhao Temple (Kun tu khyab pa’i lha khang), the central temple associated with Master Qinghai and the propagation of Tibetan Buddhism among the Chinese at Wutai shan, has been associated with Dge lugs pa and esoteric Buddhism for over five-hundred years.

294 CHAPTER 2: ANCIENT CHINESE BUILDINGS CHARACTERISTICS OF EARTHQUAKE DAMAGE TO ANCIENT BUILDINGS Zhang Chengyou* Ancient Chinese buildings such as palaces, temples, government offices, residential buildings, memorial gateways, dhamari columns, parks, tombs, etc., stand towering among various types of buildings over the world with their unique structural system, and national and architectural style. In the Tangshan seismic area including Tangshan District, Tianjin, Beijing and Chengde there are many ancient buildings of all types distributed extensively in the area due to past cultural development. These ancient buildings had generally suffered strong earthquakes in the past and simple records were left of the earthquake damage to some of these buildings. In the Tangshan earthquake most of these buildings suffered various degrees of damage or failure again. In order to investigate the earthquake resistance of ancient buildings systematically and collect required information, a seismic archaeological investigation group was organized by the State Cultural Relic Administration Bureau after the quake. The group rushed into the field and carried out a lot of investigations obtaining a great amount of valuable information. Characteristics of earthquake damage to the ancient buildings in the Beijing-Tianjin-Tangshan District and Chengde City in the Tangshan earthquake are outlined as follows according to the classification of buildings. 1. Ancient Framed Wood Buildings (1) Single-story framed wood buildings Ancient single-story framed wood buildings include mainly palaces and temples, the main structure of which is composed of wood columns, beams, bracket sets, gable-and-hip roofs or overhanging gable roofs. The earthquake resistance of this type of building is relatively good.
