  • MISC. HERITAGE NEWS –March to July 2017
MISC. HERITAGE NEWS –March to July 2017 What did we spot on the Sarawak and regional heritage scene in the last five months? SARAWAK Land clearing observed early March just uphill from the Bongkissam archaeological site, Santubong, raised alarm in the heritage-sensitive community because of the known archaeological potential of the area (for example, uphill from the shrine, partial excavations undertaken in the 1950s-60s at Bukit Maras revealed items related to the Indian Gupta tradition, tentatively dated 6 to 9th century). The land in question is earmarked for an extension of Santubong village. The bulldozing was later halted for a few days for Sarawak Museum archaeologists to undertake a rapid surface assessment, conclusion of which was that “there was no (…) artefact or any archaeological remains found on the SPK site” (Borneo Post). Greenlight was subsequently given by the Sarawak authorities to get on with the works. There were talks of relocating the shrine and, in the process, it appeared that the Bongkissam site had actually never been gazetted as a heritage site. In an e-statement, the Sarawak Heritage Society mentioned that it remained interrogative and called for due diligences rules in preventive archaeology on development sites for which there are presumptions of historical remains. Dr Charles Leh, Deputy Director of the Sarawak Museum Department mentioned an objective to make the Santubong Archaeological Park a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2020. (our Nov.2016-Feb.2017 Newsletter reported on this latter project “Extension project near Santubong shrine raises concerns” – Borneo Post, 22 March 2017 “Bongkissam shrine will be relocated” – Borneo post, 23 March 2017 “Gazette Bongkissam shrine as historical site” - Borneo Post.

After lunch process to Temple of Heaven, a place of prayer for Ming, Qing Emperors and a masterpiece of 15th century architecture. The Temple of Heaven is the most holy of Beijing's Imperial temples. For this is where the Emperor came every winter solstice to worship heaven and to solemnly pray for a good harvest. Since his rule was legitimised by a mandate from heaven, a bad harvest could be interpreted as his fall from heaven's favour and threaten the stability of his reign. So, it was not without a measure of self-interest that the Emperor fervently prayed for a very good crop. Day 3: Beijing (B/L) Morning highlight is the Great Wall - Mutianyu.

  • A Geographic History of Song-Dynasty Chan Buddhism: the Decline of the Yunmen Lineage
decline of the yunmen lineage Asia Major (2019) 3d ser. Vol. 32.1: 113-60 jason protass A Geographic History of Song-Dynasty Chan Buddhism: The Decline of the Yunmen Lineage abstract: For a century during China’s Northern Song era, the Yunmen Chan lineage, one of several such regional networks, rose to dominance in the east and north and then abruptly disappeared. Whereas others suggested the decline was caused by a doctri- nal problem, this essay argues that the geopolitics of the Song–Jin wars were the pri- mary cause. The argument builds upon a dataset of Chan abbots gleaned from Flame Records. A chronological series of maps shows that Chan lineages were regionally based. Moreover, Song-era writers knew of regional differences among Chan lin- eages and suggested that regionalism was part of Chan identity: this corroborates my assertion. The essay turns to local gazetteers and early-Southern Song texts that re- cord the impacts of the Song–Jin wars on monasteries in regions associated with the Yunmen lineage. Finally, I consider reasons why the few Yunmen monks who sur- vived into the Southern Song did not reconstitute their lineage, and discuss a small group of Yunmen monks who endured in north China under Jin and Yuan control. keywords: Chan, Buddhism, geographic history, mapping, spatial data n 1101, the recently installed emperor Huizong 徽宗 (r. 1100–1126) I authored a preface for a new collection of Chan 禪 religious biogra- phies, Record of the Continuation of the Flame of the Jianzhong Jingguo Era (Jianzhong Jingguo xudeng lu 建中靖國續燈錄, hereafter Continuation of the Flame).1 The emperor praised the old “five [Chan] lineages, each ex- celling in a family style 五宗各擅家風,” a semimythical system promul- gated by the Chan tradition itself to assert a shared identity among the ramifying branches of master-disciple relationships.

Welcome to Kuching, Sarawak! Take a quick look around Kuching and you will certainly notice a historic building or site, stately and unique, enchanting always; these are just some of the attractive charms of the city. Singularly or clustered, these fascinating cultural and historic icons are found at almost every turn and step you take around the city. Starting from the Brunei Sultanate Empire during the 17th and 18th Century to the White Rajahs for much of the 19th and 20th Centuries, the city's wealth of heritage sites offer an exciting mix of western and eastern influences spread within walking distances of each other. A haven to most, it is also bewilderment in choice of venues to visit for those with premium on time. Amidst the skylines of the City today, you will also find distinctive buildings from the days gone by, from the Brooke Era’s and British Colonial style architectures, archaic Chinese temples and alleyways to surprisingly fresh new looks for centuries old shophouses. • A Survey on Foreign Tourists' English Translation of Guangdong Tourism Images
Journal of Literature and Art Studies, October 2019, Vol. 9, No. 10, 1056-1060 doi: 10.17265/2159-5836/2019.10.007 D DAVID PUBLISHING A Survey on Foreign Tourists’ English Translation of Guangdong Tourism Images CHEN Ying-xi South China Business College Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Guangzhou, China Metaphor, constituting culture as well as inheriting one, is a way that human beings perceive the world. The study of cognitive metaphor theory in translation illustrates the process how the people construct psychological images from one culture to another, from one language to another. A survey on Chinese to English translation has been conducted among foreigners to see their intuitive understandings of some Guangdong tourism images. The results found out three different familiarity levels of these tourism images and the English translations from the viewpoint of the foreigners. Translation can be done without understanding the actual meanings, and understanding can occur without being able to translate. Keyword: foreign tourists, Guangdong tourism images, metaphor, translation Introduction In trans-cultural communication, understanding each other refers to understanding different cultures and their experiences. It is important to realize and respect the differences among backgrounds, cultures, values, and so on. We live in a world of metaphor. Metaphorical imagination is a crucial skill when creating tacit agreements and communicating non-shared experiences (Lakoff & Johnson, 2015, p. 202). Metaphor is a linguistic phenomenon, but more importantly, a thinking mode. When doing translations from one culture to another, the factor of cognition should be considered (Chen, 2019, pp. 26-27, 35). Cognitive Metaphor and Translation Metaphor translation converts the literal meanings from one language to another.

  • The Borderlands of Southeast Asia Southeast of Borderlands the That Comforting Ambiguity Has Disappeared
Edited by James Clad, Sean M. McDonald, and Bruce Vaughn s an academic field in its own right, the topic of border studies is experiencing a revival in university geography courses as well as in wider political commentary. Until recently, border studies in con- Atemporary Southeast Asia appeared as an afterthought at best to the politics of interstate rivalry and national consolidation. The maps set out all agreed postcolonial lines. Meanwhile, the physical demarcation of these boundar- ies lagged. Large slices of territory, on land and at sea, eluded definition or delineation. The Borderlands of Southeast Asia That comforting ambiguity has disappeared. Both evolving technologies and price levels enable rapid resource extraction in places, and in volumes, once scarcely imaginable. The beginning of the 21st century’s second decade is witnessing an intensifying diplomacy, both state-to-state and commercial, over offshore petroleum. In particular, the South China Sea has moved from being a rather arcane area of conflict studies to the status of a bellwether issue. Along with other contested areas in the western Pacific and south Asia, the problem increasingly defines China’s regional relationships in Asia—and with powers outside the region, especially the United States. Yet intraregional territorial differences also hobble multilateral diplomacy to counter Chinese claims, and daily management of borders remains burdened by a lot of retrospective baggage. The contributors to this book emphasize this mix of heritage and history as the primary leitmotif for contemporary border rivalries and dynamics. Whether the region’s 11 states want it or not, their bordered identity is falling into ever sharper definition—if only because of pressure from extraregional states.
