The trend-setting event in the heart of Europe City Tips Munich Idyllically situated at the foot of the Alps, the Bavarian capital Munich, with its 1.2 million inhabitants, is not only famous for its Oktoberfest. The cosmopolitan city has much more to offer, such as many museums, sights, leisure activities and is therefore certainly worth a visit! You can start your trip for example with a stroll through Munich´s famous shopping mall. Just around the corner of Munich´s central railway station there is the Stachus, Munich´s lively pedestrian shopping area with many shops and cafés. Or listen to the wonderful Glo- ckenspiel (carillon) of the Munich City Hall, which every day attracts many tourists when the carillon sounds between 11 and 12 o´clock. Within walking distance there is the Alte Peter, Munich´s oldest church. Whoever climbs up the 306 steps to the viewing platform will be rewarded with a fantastic view over the city and the beautiful surrounding countryside. If you are lucky and the weather is fi ne you may even catch a glimpse of the Alps and the highest mountain in Germany, the Zugspitze. Certainly you should not miss to visit the famous Munich Hofbräuhaus (restaurant and bre- wery) or the traditional and very popular Viktualien market. Art lovers will be able to enjoy their passion during a visit at the Alten Pinakothek (Munich art gallery). More than 800 masterpi- eces created by European artists bring to life the development of art from the Middle Ages to the end of the Rococo period. In the Neuen Pinakothek the focus lies on 19th century art. The Pinakothek der Moderne (gallery of modern art) distinguishes itself by its wonderful architec- ture and offers a wide variety of art and installations of the 20th and 21st century. One of the latest highlights is probably the Munich based BMW World. There you can learn more about the history of the successful Bavarian car manufacturer and its future plans. Moreover, for years the German Museum has always been another absolute must to visit. It was founded in 1903 and exhibits objects from roughly 50 different fi elds of science and technology displayed on an area of about 73,000 square meters. It is the most popular mu- seum in Germany and was founded in order for visitors to gain a better insight into the fi eld of technology and science and to explain complicated processes in an easy comprehensible way. Probably one of the most famous is the Nymphenburg Palace. The baroque palace in the west part of Munich was the summer residence of the Bavarian monarchs and it was originally Ferdinand Maria´s present to his wife Henriette Adelaide. Also the famous Marstall Museum, the well-known porcelain factory Nymphenburg and the museum Humans and Nature are to be found there. The landscaped park with its venerable trees, myriad waterways and secluded pa- vilions is an ideal place to continue to explore other sights such as the Amalienburg, the Badenburg (fi rst heated indoor pool of modern times) or the Magdalenenklause, one of the fi rst artifi cial ruins in European garden landscaping as well as other “little masterpieces”.
