They also relate in their works the shifting and fluid nature 34 of Yemoja and the divinity in her manifestations and in the lives of her 35 devotees. This book, Yemoja: Gender, Sexuality, and Creativity in the 36 Latina/o and Afro-Atlantic Diasporas, takes these words of supplica- 37 tion and praise as an entry point into an in-depth conversation about 38 the international Yoruba water deity Yemoja. Our work brings together 39 the voices of scholars, practitioners, and artists involved with the inter- 40 sectional religious and cultural practices involving Yemoja from Africa, 41 the Caribbean, North America, and South America. Challenging hip-hop historiographers that narrate the movement as the materialization of a “phantom aesthetic”, or a sociological, cultural, technological, and musical innovation of the last forty years, this dissertation asserts that hip-hop artists deploy distinctly literary techniques in their attempts to animate, write, rewrite, rupture, or reclaim the past for the present. Through an analysis of 20th and 21st century African-American literary engagements with black music, musical figures, scenes of musical performance, and what I call ‘musical-oral’, I hope to demonstrate how prose representations of music disrupt the linear narratives of -

“Spirits that Matter: Cross-Gender Identifications in Haitian Vodou. In Defying Binarism: Gender Dynamics in Caribbean Literature and Culture . Virginia University Press. Ed. (forthcoming) Cross-Gender Identifications in Vodou Roberto Strongman University of California, Santa Barbara The representation of Vodou in Haitian cultural production is replete with cross- gendered subjectivities that many critics have failed to take into account. In Rene Depestre’s novel Hadriana dans tous mes rêves , the protagonist—Hadriana, a white French woman living in Haiti—is turned into a zombi on her wedding day and becomes the leader of a Vodou community. Martin Murno sees in Hadriana’s whiteness “obvious traces of Depestre’s francophilia” (Munro 2007, 127). He also concedes that there might be an element of resistance in Depestre’s idealizaton of Hadriana’s beauty by claiming that Hadriana might embody a “reversal of colonial eroticization of its tropical other” (Munro 2007, 127). What Munro fails to notice, however, is how Hadriana’s aborted marriage begins a non-heteronormative characterization that continues throughout her spiritual evolution. At the outset of the text Hadriana is associated with Nana Buruku, a lwa that is often represented as embodying a primordial androgynous gender. The people of Jacmel, unable to accept that a heart attack brought Nana down to the foot of the altar, used their necrophilic imagination to reinsert their daughter into a fairy tale. Her body’s disappearance from the sepulcher was the catalyst for such a leap from the fear of death into fantasy. 1(Depestre 1988, 98--99) At the end of the novel, she is associated with a male deity of springs: “I was Simbi-the- Spring. -

religions Article Continuing Conjure: African-Based Spiritual Traditions in Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad and Jesmyn Ward’s Sing, Unburied, Sing James Mellis Guttman Community College, 50 West 40th St., New York, NY 10018, USA; [email protected] Received: 10 April 2019; Accepted: 23 June 2019; Published: 26 June 2019 Abstract: In 2016 and 2017, Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad and Jesmyn Ward’s Sing, Unburied, Sing both won the National Book Award for fiction, the first time that two African-American writers have won the award in consecutive years. This article argues that both novels invoke African-based spirituality in order to create literary sites of resistance both within the narrative of the respective novels, but also within American culture at large. By drawing on a tradition of authors using African-based spiritual practices, particularly Voodoo, hoodoo, conjure and rootwork, Whitehead and Ward enter and engage in a tradition of African American protest literature based on African spiritual traditions, and use these traditions variously, both as a tie to an originary African identity, but also as protection and a locus of resistance to an oppressive society. That the characters within the novels engage in African spiritual traditions as a means of locating a sense of “home” within an oppressive white world, despite the novels being set centuries apart, shows that these traditions provide a possibility for empowerment and protest and can act as a means for contemporary readers to address their own political and social concerns. She wanted to show that pregnant, working women have a place in society. Singer Vanessa Williams tweeted that her pregnant belly was not shown when she performed at the Grammys in 1993. Back then, she wore a billowing black dress to hide her belly. "Oh how times have changed," Williams added as she praised Beyoncé. Beyoncé proudly displayed her pregnancy as she performed. Behind her, pre-recorded images of Beyoncé with her mother, Tina Lawson, and her 5-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy, flashed across the stage. Grandmother, mother and daughter were dressed in yellow. Performance Brought A Deeper Message The lady lovefest lasted nearly 10 minutes. There was a large, female cast, chairs that tipped back dangerously, Christian images of the Virgin Mary and Jesus, golden flashes of the African Yoruba religion, and symbols of other religions. The song came from her Grammy-nominated album "Lemonade." The grand golden display was an important part of her music. It was also a part of a deeper message that Beyoncé was teaching. -

Jed Murr University of Washington Abstract The Unquiet Dead: Race and Violence in the “Post-Racial” United States J.E. Jed Murr Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Eva Cherniavksy English This dissertation project investigates some of the ways histories of racial violence work to (de)form dominant and oppositional forms of common sense in the allegedly “post-racial” United States. Centering “culture” as a terrain of contestation over common sense racial meaning, The Unquiet Dead focuses in particular on popular cultural repertoires of narrative, visual, and sonic enunciation to read how histories of racialized and gendered violence circulate, (dis)appear, and congeal in and as “common sense” in a period in which the uneven dispensation of value and violence afforded different bodies is purported to no longer break down along the same old racial lines. Much of the project is grounded in particular in the emergent cultural politics of race of the early to mid-1990s, a period I understand as the beginnings of the US “post-racial moment.” The ongoing, though deeply and contested and contradictory, “post-racial moment” is one in which the socio-cultural valorization of racial categories in their articulations to other modalities of difference and oppression is alleged to have undergone significant transformation such that, among other things, processes of racialization are understood as decisively delinked from racial violence. -
The Construction of an Essentialist Mixed-Race' Identity in the Anglophone Caribbean Novel
THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN ESSENTIALIST MIXED-RACE' IDENTITY IN THE ANGLOPHONE CARIBBEAN NOVEL 1914 -1998 A thesis submitted to the University of London in part fulfilment of the requirement for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Melissa PERSAUD Goldsmiths College University of London Supervisor: Dr Helen Carr March 2000 ýý-ýýý ti r1 ,ý ý. ABSTRACT This thesis examines the portrayal of the 'mixed-race' person in twentieth-century Caribbean literature. The premise that their portrayal has been limited by essentialised racial stereotypes is investigated and the conclusion is reached that these stereotypes have been founded in nineteenth century theories of racial hybridity. The development of this racial theory is explored and reveals that the concept of hybridity was generated through imperialistic and colonial endeavours to support a policy of racial subjugation predicated by European economic desire to exploit non-white peoples. In the Caribbean this took the form of African slavery, and the need to keep the 'races' separate and unequal under this system led to the demonisation of 'mixed-race' people of African and European descent. Despite attempts to prevent the proliferation of a 'mixed-race' population, their increasing numbers led to further plantocratic strategies to divide the 'mixed-race' and black population in order to maintain white socio-economic supremacy. This thesis finds that the literary construction of 'mixed-race' identity has been grounded in a biologised fallacy of `hybridity'. Despite recent attempts to appropriate the term `hybridity' as a cultural metaphor, hybridity itself remains entrenched in nineteenth century notions of absolute racial difference. The biological concept of `mixed-race' degeneracy coupled with the white engineered racial divisions within Caribbean society has left the 'mixed-race' person in an ambivalent position.
