List is enclosed. Agenda: 1) Päivi Kärnä told the participants that we are in the process of planning a new environmental education project. In this meeting in Aegna the goal is to collect project ideas and good examples and practices from local actors. 2) Gennady presented the Estonian working group of environmental education of the City of Tallinn. The working group was founded last year in order to coordinate the work in environmental education between three local actors: 1) the Environmental department, 2) the Educational department and 3) The Department of Culture. The working group gathered all the people together that are active in environmental education work and they convene once a month. - The Environmental department manages the House of Nature on Aegna island and the Botanical garden. In the Tallinn Botanical garden there also is a Centre for environmental education. - The Educational department is in charge of the work in schools and kindergartens. There are over 60 schools and over a 100 kindergartens. They also manage their own Centre of Environmental education. - The Department of Culture manages the Tallinn Zoo with a new Centre for environmental education. As a result of this cooperation the Environmental department together with the Educational department organized a Flower festival with 600-700 participants and 50 teachers, where everyone planted their own flower.

The effectiveness of the system was studied by tak- ing photos of 165 insect species including some subspecies from museum collections (105 Coleoptera, 11 Hemi ptera (Pentatomidae), 12 Hymenoptera, 10 Lepidoptera, 9 Mantodea, 4 Odonata, 13 Orthoptera, 1 Phasmatodea) and 16 living insect species (1 Lepidoptera, 3 Mantodea, 4 Orthoptera, 8 Phasmato- dea), from which four are exemplarily pictured herein. The system is based on a modifi ed standard consumer DSLR camera (Canon Rebel XSi), which was altered for two-channel colour infrared photography. The camera is especially sensitive in the spectral range of 700-800 nm, which is well- suited to visualize small scale spectral differences in the steep of increase in refl ectance in this range, as it could be seen in some species. Several of the investigated species show at least a partial infrared refl ectance.

  • TARANTULA Araneae Family: Theraphosidae Genus: 113 Genera
TARANTULA Araneae Family: Theraphosidae Genus: 113 genera Range: World wide Habitat tropical and desert regions; greatest concentration S America Niche: Terrestrial or arboreal, carnivorous, mainly nocturnal predators Wild diet: as grasshoppers, crickets and beetles but some of the larger species may also eat mice, lizards and frogs or even small birds Zoo diet: Life Span: (Wild) varies with species and sexes, females tend to live long lives (Captivity) Sexual dimorphism: Location in SF Zoo: Children’s Zoo - Insect Zoo APPEARANCE & PHYSICAL ADAPTATIONS: Tarantulas are large, long-legged, long-living spiders, whose entire body is covered with short hairs, which are sensitive to vibration. They have eight simple eyes arranged in two distinct rows but rely on their hairs to send messages of local movement. These spiders do not spin a web but catch their prey by pursuit, killing them by injecting venom through their fangs. The injected venom liquefies their prey, allowing them to suck out the innards and leave the empty exoskeleton. The chelicerae are vertical and point downward making it necessary to raise its front end to strike forward and down onto its prey. Tarantulas have two pair of book lungs, which are situated on the underside of the abdomen. (Most spiders have only one pair). All tarantulas produce silk through the two or four spinnerets at the end of their abdomen (A typical spiders averages six). New World Tarantulas vs. Old World Tarantulas: New World species have urticating hairs that causes the potential predator to itch and be distracted so the tarantula can get away. They are less aggressive than Old World Tarantulas who lack urticating hairs and their venom is less potent.

  • Reproductive Biology of Uruguayan Theraphosids (Araneae, Mygalomorphae)
2002. The Journal of Arachnology 30:571±587 REPRODUCTIVE BIOLOGY OF URUGUAYAN THERAPHOSIDS (ARANEAE, MYGALOMORPHAE) Fernando G. Costa: Laboratorio de EtologõÂa, EcologõÂa y EvolucioÂn, IIBCE, Av. Italia 3318, Montevideo, Uruguay. E-mail: [email protected] Fernando PeÂrez-Miles: SeccioÂn EntomologõÂa, Facultad de Ciencias, Igua 4225, 11400 Montevideo, Uruguay ABSTRACT. We describe the reproductive biology of seven theraphosid species from Uruguay. Species under study include the Ischnocolinae Oligoxystre argentinense and the Theraphosinae Acanthoscurria suina, Eupalaestrus weijenberghi, Grammostola iheringi, G. mollicoma, Homoeomma uruguayense and Plesiopelma longisternale. Sexual activity periods were estimated from the occurrence of walking adult males. Sperm induction was described from laboratory studies. Courtship and mating were also described from both ®eld and laboratory observations. Oviposition and egg sac care were studied in the ®eld and laboratory. Two complete cycles including female molting and copulation, egg sac construction and emer- gence of juveniles were reported for the ®rst time in E. weijenberghi and O. argentinense. The life span of adults was studied and the whole life span was estimated up to 30 years in female G. mollicoma, which seems to be a record for spiders. A comprehensive review of literature on theraphosid reproductive biology was undertaken. In the discussion, we consider the lengthy and costly sperm induction, the widespread display by body vibrations of courting males, multiple mating strategies of both sexes and the absence of sexual cannibalism. Keywords: Uruguayan tarantulas, sexual behavior, sperm induction, life span Theraphosids are the largest and longest- PeÂrez-Miles et al. (1993), PeÂrez-Miles et al. lived spiders of the world. Research and Development Council RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN ESTONIA 1996 - 1999 STRUCTURE AND TRENDS Tallinn 2001 Secretariat of the Research and Development Council State Chancellery The Stenbock House,3 Rahukohtu St. 15161 Tallinn, ESTONIA http://www.tan.ee Fax: (372) 693 5704 Phone: (372) 693 5702 [email protected] Compilers: Dr. Rein Kaarli Dr. Tiit Laasberg Translator: Juta Reiska Language editor: Eda Tammelo ISBN 9985-50-327-9 I have persistently kept asking what Estonia’s Nokia could be. This has even become part of local folklore. Yet the conclusion drawn by many Estonians, including several prominent gures, that the Presi- dent is looking for one single product like Pippi Longstocking once looked for Spunk - is somewhat unexpected. As a matter of fact, the President of Estonia is not supposed to seek Estonia’s Nokia. I am seeking it for you. For those who are too lazy to do it themselves. However, it is every Estonian proprietor’s task to look for their own so-called Nokias, and nd at least six of them annually. The key factor to innovation is man. I have used this example of Nokia to draw attention to the product that Estonia does not make in large quantities - this is world-class labour force. A study loan taken with the intention to get proper education and training would consti- tute a safe investment in any case, for the borrowers will, sooner or later, rise to such high and well-paid positions that returning the loan is as easy as anything. Having adopted Western-type business culture and well functioning marketing mechanisms, it is now primarily in the eld of intellectual property that Estonia, in order to survive in the third round, needs to be able to create surplus value.
