This Day in History… April 2, 1647 Birth of Maria Sibylla Merian Naturalist and artist Maria Sibylla Merian was born on April 2, 1647, in Frankfurt-am- Main, Germany. Merian spent her life studying insects and plants and capturing them in beautifully detailed paintings and drawings. Merian’s father was an engraver and publisher, but he died when she was three. Her mother remarried artist Jacob Marrel in 1651 and he encouraged her to paint and draw. When she was 13, Merian did her first painting of plants and insects based on live specimens she collected. She was fascinated by caterpillars and collected all she could find so she could witness how they changed into beautiful butterflies and moths. Merian married her stepfather’s apprentice, Johann Andreas Graff, in 1665 and they moved to Nuremberg in 1670. Koch, 1841) (Theraphosidae, Aviculariinae) is a very rare, colorful and small tarantula found in the Atlantic Rainforest in Bahia and Sergipe. The original description of this species was based on a single female and no illustrations of reproductive organs were presented. After we collected several specimens identified as I. seladonium, we decided to redescribe this species and discovered that the male, previously described as belonging to this species, was misidentified by MELLO LEITÃO (1923). Thus, in this paper the male of I. seladonium is newly described and the reproductive organs of male and female are described and illustrated in detail. Notes on the behavior and natural history of I. seladonium are presented based on the observation of live specimens in the field and in captivity. An immature of I. seladonium was observed constructing a hinged retreat with silk and little pieces of bark, a behavior not previously seen for other Aviculariinae. -

Abstract The genus Avicularia Lamarck 1818 contains the oldest mygalomorph species described. It’s taxonomical history is very complex and for the first time it has been revised. A cladistic analysis with 70 characters and 43 taxa were done. The preferred cladogram was obtained using the computer program Pee Wee and concavity 6. The subfamily Aviculariinae contains the genera Stromatopelma, Heteroscodra, Psalmopoeus, Tapinauchenius, Ephebopus, Pachistopelma, Iridopelma, Avicularia, Genus 1 and Gen. nov. 1, Gen. nov. 2, Gen. nov. 3 and Gen. nov.4. Aviculariinae is monophyletic, sharing the presence of spatulated scopulae on tarsi and metatarsi, juveniles with a central longitudinal stripe connected with lateral stripes on dorsal abdomen and arboreal habit. The synapomorphy of Avicularia is the presence of a moderately developed protuberance on tegulum. The genus is constituted by 14 species: A. avicularia (type species), A. juruensis, A. purpurea, A. taunayi, A. variegata status nov., A. velutina, A. rufa, A. aymara, Avicularia sp. -

A new species of Tmesiphantes Simon, 1892 is described and illustrated, based on eight male specimens collected at the Una Biological Reserve, southern state of Bahia, Brazil. It is distinguished by the morphology of male palpal bulb and tibial apophysis. The new species is very small and is the smallest theraphosid described to date (body length 5.5 mm). It is distinguished from congeners by the size, which vary from 12 mm (T. riopretano) to 23.8 mm (T. nubilus) in other species of the genus, aspect of palpal bulb, sternal posterior sigillae close to sternal margin and by the aspect of tibial apophysis which lacks the prolateral branch. Tmesiphantes presently comprises nine species. Sixth have been described for the southern region of Bahia, a well known area of endemism in the Atlantic Forest. Identification keys for Tmesiphantes males and females are presented. KEY WORDS. Mygalomorphae; Neotropics; tarantula; taxonomy; Theraphosinae; Una Biological Reserve. Tmesiphantes comprises small to medium sized tarantula Tmesiphantes, emphasizing the morphology of the male palpal spiders, with labium and maxillae with few cuspules, rounded bulb and femur III incrassate as diagnostic features of the genus. -

When the museums of Lübeck, Stuttgart, Tübingen and partly of Wiesbaden were destroyed during World War II between 1942 and 1945, also all or parts of their type material were destroyed, among them types from spider species described by Embrik Strand bet- ween 1906 and 1917. He did not illustrate type material from 181 species and one subspecies and described them only in an insufficient manner. These species were never recollected during more than 110 years and no additional taxonomically relevant information was published in the arachnological literature. It is impossible to recognize them, so we declare these 181 species here as nomina dubia. Four of these species belong to monotypic genera, two of them to a ditypic genus described by Strand in the context of the mentioned species descriptions. Consequently, without including valid species, the five genera Carteroniella Strand, 1907, Eurypelmella Strand, 1907, Theumella Strand, 1906, Thianella Strand, 1907 and Tmeticides Strand, 1907 are here also declared as nomina dubia. MAHS itself has created many such care sheets for a wide range of reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates we believe to have straightforward care requirements, and thus make suitable family and beginner’s to intermediate level pets. Some species with much more complex, difficult to meet, or impracticable care requirements than what can be adequately explained in a one page care sheet may be multiple pages. We can also provide additional links, resources, and information on these species we feel are reliable and trustworthy if requested. If you would like to request a copy of a care sheet for any of the species listed below, or have a suggestion for an animal you don’t see on our list, contact us to let us know! Unfortunately, for liability reasons, MAHS is unable to create or publish care sheets for medically significant venomous species. This includes species in the families Crotilidae, Viperidae, and Elapidae, as well as the Helodermatidae (the Gila Monsters and Mexican Beaded Lizards) and some medically significant rear fanged Colubridae. Those that are serious about wishing to learn more about venomous reptile husbandry that cannot be adequately covered in one to three page care sheets should take the time to utilize all available resources by reading books and literature, consulting with, and working with an experienced and knowledgeable mentor in order to learn the ropes hands on. -
