INTRODUCTION Dear Competitors, The 87th edition of the Monte-Carlo Rally will take place from the 21st - 27th January 2019. There are a few noteworthy modifications this year in an attempt to make it less complicated for everyone involved, Competitors and Organisation alike: a reduction in the duration of the Rally (one day less), a shorter length of the SS with 323 km (and so the reconnaissance) as well as the total distance to cover (1366 km). On the first day there will no longer be any departure from Monaco as the rally will start at Place Desmichels in Gap on Thursday, 24th January from 18h50. The first two new Special Stages will be completed during the night in the surrounding area: « La Bréole - Selonnet » (20.76 km) in the Alpes-de- Haute-Provence and « Avancon - Notre-Dames-du-Laus » (20.59 km) in the Hautes-Alpes. The first car is expected to enter the Service Park in Gap at 21h41. Six SS are scheduled (two runs on three different stages) on Friday, 25th January with a total distance of 125 km covered over the whole day starting at 07h30 and due to end at 17h44. The SS 3/6 « Valdrome - Sigottier » crosses between two departments and is completely new (20.04 km), the SS 4/7 « Roussieux - Laborel » (24.05 km) retains the majority of a 2018 stage and the SS 5/8 « Curbans - Piegut » (18.47 km) has never been driven in this direction. On Saturday, 26th January only four SS are scheduled before everyone heads to Monaco (two runs on two different stages) « Agnières-en-Devoluy - Corps » and as the start point has changed this year compared to 2018 so the distance has changed to 29.82 km, and « St-Léger-les-Mélèzes - La-Bâtie-Neuve » (16.87 km) identical to 2018 and televised live at 10h16 and 14h08. After leaving Gap at 16h06 the first car is expected in the Principality just before 20h00. January 27th is a Bank Holiday in Monaco, St Devote being the Patron Saint of the Principality. Only the first 60 ranked, after the last tyre fitting zone, will follow the same route and SS as last year, « La-Bollène- Vésubie - Peira Cava » (18.41 km) and « La Cabanette - Col de Braus » (13.58 km) which will be the Power Stage for its second run (televised live from 12h18). The arrival of the first car at the Parc Fermé is expected before 14h00 and the Prize Giving Ceremony will exceptionally take place on Quai Albert 1er from 15h00 (as was traditionally done up until the 80’s). The Gala Dinner for this first round of the 2019 FIA World Rally Championship will take place in the Salle des Etoiles of the Monte-Carlo Sporting Club. Wishing you a successful Rally. • 1968 Monte Carlo Rally – First Victory in the 911
1968 Monte Carlo Rally – first victory in the 911 The Porsche 911 took three consecutive wins in the Monte Carlo Rally, with Vic Elford and David Stone delivering the first of these victories in 1968. In an ideal development for Porsche, the 1968 Monte Carlo Rally was the first to be subject to new rules that removed restrictions relating to cubic capacity classes and the use of professional and amateur drivers. The system applied as of that year boiled down to a single maxim: fastest car wins! Another factor that was markedly different to previous years was the weather. The 37th Monte Carlo Rally was held in almost spring-like temperatures, with these mild conditions extending up into the mountains. The teams demanded racing tyres, but the available stocks proved insufficient. This led to additional tyres featuring a soft mixture, little tread and no spikes being flown in by the tyre manufacturers via Nice and transported to the special tests. While the French driver Gérard Larrousse dominated the early stages of this edition of the Monte Carlo Rally in his Renault Alpine 1300, Vic Elford and David Stone bided their time in the 911 S 2.0 and waited for an opening. The ‘night of the long knives’, which was open to the sixty fastest teams, initially saw Larrousse further extend his lead before Elford hit back. Completing the special test at the Col de la Couillole nearly a minute faster than the Alpine, he duly raced into the lead. The final tests then saw the top drivers take even greater risks.
