CVS Central Lancashire is proud to unveil a new website, which you can view here: http://cvscentrallancashire.btck.co.uk/ The new site will make it far easier for us to engage via the web and over time it will expand to include ever more exciting and interesting things for the VCFS in Preston, Chorley and South Ribble. We would like to thank NHS Central Lancashire for their input and encouragement. The new site includes dedicated sections on Health and Wellbeing as well as a re-jigged "Your Community" section in which we will be profiling different organisations over the coming weeks. For the first time, this week's news e-bulletin will be made available on the site on the "Newsletters" page, to download as a PDF or Word document. Just click the link! You can also now view a short film focused on Making Preston Healthy on the new Health and Wellbeing pages. We have kept the site simple, to make is easily accessible, but we would like the site to become a useful and well used resource for the VCFS in Preston, Chorley and South Ribble - so let us know what you'd like to see there! With an emphasis firmly on the Preston Guild, the children have been putting on a display of music and dance and verse since Tuesday. http://www.lep.co.uk/lifestyle/reviews/music/music-festival-reaches-high- note-with-guild-show-1-4601048 Be the bard of the 2012 Guild The hunt is on for a Preston Guild bard to pen an official poem for the city’s celebrations. Preston Poets’ Society is inviting people with a way with words to create a verse which features Preston in some way. The contest will be judged by Michael Symmons Roberts, a professor and writer at Manchester Metropolitan University who won the prestigious Whitbread Poetry Award in 2004. http://www.lep.co.uk/community/be-the-bard-of-the-2012-guild-1-4583341 Leading role for John Some people just cannot help getting involved in the Preston Guild. Lancashire County Councillor John Shedwick played a key role in the last Preston Guild as general manager of the Guildhall and Charter Theatre. Since then he has become immersed in politics and was yesterday handed the ceremonial role as chairman of Lancashire County Council for the Guild year. Speaking after a full meeting of Lancashire County Council in which he was voted in as chairman, which is equivalent to a mayor, he said: “It is an excellent year to be chairman and I am really looking forward to it all. http://www.lep.co.uk/community/leading-role-for-john-1-4583374 Guild novel set for TV showcase An author whose debut novel is set during Preston Guild is hoping the book will be turned into a TV sitcom. Mark Lowery’s children’s fiction tale, Socks Are Not Enough, has landed him a two-book deal and attracted interest from television bosses. http://www.lep.co.uk/news/guild-novel-set-for-tv-showcase-1-4593891 Collectors to visit Guild fair, Barton Village Hall - 1 September A fair will be held to celebrate Preston Guild 2012. The Preston Guild Stamp and Card Fair will be at Barton Village Hall on September 1, from 10.15am, with dealers from across the UK. *** GUILD EVENTS IN JUNE *** Diamond Jubilee Weekend 2 - 5 June Annual Whit Fair Saturday 2nd – Tuesday 5th June Something of a Preston tradition, the Flag Market in Preston City Centre will host a series of traditional family fairground rides over the bank holiday weekend. Merry-go-rounds and family favourites will brighten up any Bank Holiday shopping trip http://www.prestonguild2012.com/?OBH=413&ID=434 Incoming Mayor’s Service Sunday 3 June This is an annual tradition with added significance in Guild year as the new Guild Mayor leads a civic procession from Preston’s Guild Hall to the beautiful Minster for a service of dedication for the forthcoming Mayoral year. This is followed by a procession back to the Guild Hall. People traditionally line the short route through the city centre to welcome the Guild Mayor. http://www.prestonguild2012.com/?OBH=413&ID=447 Preston Caribbean Carnival Sunday 3 June As the largest and longest running cultural celebration in Preston (other than Preston Guild itself), this West Indian celebration brings the streets of Preston alive with nonstop dancing, music, and outrageously colourful costumes as the huge procession leaves Moor Park and snakes through the city centre. The atmosphere is electric as large crowds line the route to participate in the party and join in the fun. Avenham Park comes to life in the evening with a live stage show entertaining the crowds with Caribbean beats to make you boogie! Preston Carnival is the place to be for a real flavour of the Caribbean in the heart of Lancashire. Fresh Caribbean food as sizzling as the atmosphere will give you the energy to keep partying long into the evening. http://www.prestonguild2012.com/?OBH=413&ID=382 Preston’s Big Jubilee Langar (Lunch) - 3 June To celebrate the Queens Diamond Jubilee Preston and raise the profile of the Sikh community in Preston, Preston Sikh Community will be hosting a 'Langar' (free community kitchen). The event will follow a cultural programme featuring a host of entertainment including dancing, singing and more! http://www.preston.gov.uk/events/details/1660/ UCLan Creative Festival Friday 15t – Friday 22 June Taking place in the st Peter’s Arts Centre and Media Factory, this event will showcase the best creative work from uCLan final year students in architecture, art, design, performing arts, media practice, photography, film, music and related disciplines. http://www.prestonguild2012.com/?OBH=413&ID=743 The Sky Ride Preston - Sunday 17 June Cyclists of all ages and abilities are welcome to create a spectacular event with over 5,000 participants. Preston is one of a small number of city venues selected for the 2012 sky Ride programme. This is a free British Cycling mass participation recreational event on an 8k closed road and parkland circuit taking in parts of the Guild Wheel. Roads will be closed between 10am – 4pm with a central roadshow hub at the Flag Market in the heart of the city as the starting or calling in point for riders. sky/British Cycling are encouraging online registration before the event and will be providing incentives to encourage people to do so. http://www.prestonguild2012.com/?OBH=413&ID=672 Olympic Torch Relay & Big Dance – London 2012 Festival - 23 June The official route for the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay will see the Olympic Torch pass through Preston on the morning of June 23rd. As part of the London 2012 Festival, a huge dance event will celebrate the participatory nature of the Olympic Games. In addition to many fun and entertaining events and activities taking place, the day will involve performances by professional and amateur dance companies along with mass-participation from community groups and members of the public who wish to take part. http://www.prestonguild2012.com/?OBH=413&ID=705 The Methodist Church Collection of Modern Christian Art - 22 June – 20 July St Peter’s Arts Centre UCLan This unique collection of Christian art includes more than 40 works by Graham Sutherland, Elizabeth Frink and many other renowned artists. Dance and entertainment from around the world will take place alongside a strong community element featuring performances from local musicians and dance groups.
