Olympic torchbearer shocked at 'abuse' after auctioning her torch for charity An Olympic torchbearer who auctioned her torch to raise money for a community organisation has said she was not prepared for the number of "abusive, offensive and filthy messages" she received as a result. Torchbearers are being asked to pay about £200 to keep the torch they carry. Sarah Milner Simonds bought hers, then put it up for auction on eBay to raise money for The People’s Plot, a community gardening project. The highest bid she received for the torch was £153,100. But Simonds said this was "not a genuine bid but part of a protest that grew". Although the seller’s bid constitutes a legally binding contract, Simonds says she is not confident she will receive the money. Simonds, who carried the torch because of her work with The People’s Plot, said: "My desire was only ever to raise money for community gardening. If we want to nurture and grow our neighbourhood groups, they need to be properly resourced. "I fear for anyone else who tries to sell their torch to raise money for charity."

High Court closes companies involved in charity bag collection scam Two connected companies that operated a charity bag collection scam have been wound up in the High Court after an Insolvency Service investigation. Air Ambulance Recycling Limited and E&N Textiles, which operated across the UK but primarily in the west midlands, both solicited donations of unwanted clothing by dropping off collection bags, the Insolvency Service said. Both companies, which shared a director who was not named by the Insolvency Service, made "misleading representations" that donated clothing would be sold and the proceeds would go to local air ambulance charities, the Insolvency Service said. But the investigation found no evidence that any donations had been made. Alex Deane, the investigation supervisor, said: "In winding up these companies, the court has sent a clear message that it is unacceptable to mislead the public and exploit their goodwill towards emergency services. The Insolvency Service will seek to have such companies closed down."

Violence victims told not to suffer in silence Domestic abuse victims are being urged not to suffer in silence with a new campaign. The project, funded by Safer Lancashire, also reassures victims they will be handled with care and given access to the support services they need to break free from abuse. It is being launched ahead of a busy summer of events, including the Euro 2012 Football Championships, as evidence suggests there is often a rise in women being assaulted during football tournaments, largely as a result of increased alcohol consumption by their partners. The National Domestic Violence Helpline can be contacted 24 hours a day, seven days a week, on 0808 2000 247. http://www.lep.co.uk/news/local/violence-victims-told-not-to-suffer-in- silence-1-4593879

Two charity advertisements in regulator's all-time top 10 for generating complaints TV adverts by Marie Stopes International and Barnardo's, which were not censured by the Advertising Standards Authority, among most complained- about in 50 years Two charity advertisements are among the UK’s 10 most complained-about adverts of all time. The TV adverts, for the sexual health charity Marie Stopes International and the children's charity Barnardo’s, were among those that provoked the largest number of complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority in its 50 years of existence, the watchdog revealed today in its 2011 annual report. The Marie Stopes advert, screened in 2010, offered information and advice on reproductive and sexual health and prompted 1,088 complaints. The Barnardo’s campaign, shown in 2008, featured a girl being repeatedly hit around the head by her father, bringing a cycle of violence and drug abuse. It generated 840 complaints. The ASA said the advertisement, which was intended to raise awareness of domestic child abuse, was justified in using such strong imagery. The ASA did not uphold the complaints in either case.

Consultations Charity Commission launches consultation on cutting Gift Aid to charities that file accounts late The Charity Commission is asking for views on whether Gift Aid should be cut for charities that file their accounts late. A consultation on the information the commission collects from charities asks whether the regulator should provide the details of the offending charities to HM Revenue & Customs to enable it to withhold the money. The consultation says the idea could not be taken forward by the commission alone because it requires a change in the law and would cost money, but the regulator says it wants to get views on the matter. The consultation, called Register of Charities: a review of the information collected from charities, also suggests the idea of the regulator fining charities that submit their returns late or putting a flag on the register to highlight those that filed early. http://www.charitycommission.gov.uk/About_us/About_the_Commission/register_consultation_questi ons.aspx

Charity calls for school suncream advice A health charity is urging the government to give schools in England advice about the use of suncream to stop children getting sunburned. The British Skin Foundation says pupils are left vulnerable as schools do not have policies on the responsibility for sunscreen reapplication. The BSF is trying to get 100,000 signatures on an e-petition to trigger a debate in the House of Commons. Advice from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) says schools should encourage children to seek shade whenever possible, particularly when out playing in the midday sun. It says sunscreen (with a sun protection factor of at least 15) should be applied liberally half an hour before and after going out in the sun, and reapplied every two hours thereafter. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-18248650 Epetition http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/32565 NICE Skin Cancer report http://www.nice.org.uk/nicemedia/live/13310/52562/52562.pdf

‘Don’t ignore a cough...it could be cancer’ Around 274 people across central Lancashire die each year of lung cancer, startling figures revealed today. On top of that, there are about 327 new cases of lung cancer diagnosed in the area every year and currently, only 30% of lung cancer sufferers are expected to reach the one year survival milestone. Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in England. There are around 33,000 new cases every year and it kills more men and women than any other form of cancer. It affects people of all ages but is most common in those who are over 50. Although it is more common in smokers, around one in eight people with lung cancer has never smoked. If you have been coughing for three weeks or more or are experiencing any other symptoms, see your GP. http://www.lep.co.uk/community/don-t-ignore-a-cough-it-could-be-cancer- 1-4601054
