MEDIA RELEASE Wednesday 9 May, 2012 Sydney Film Festival 6-17 June 2012 Program Launch The 59th Sydney Film Festival program was officially launched today by The Hon Barry O’Farrell, MP, Premier of NSW. “It is with great pleasure that I welcome the new Sydney Film Festival Director, Nashen Moodley, to present the 2012 Sydney Film Festival program,” said NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell. “The Sydney Film Festival is a much-loved part of the arts calendar providing film-makers with a wonderful opportunity to showcase their work, as well as providing an injection into the State economy.” SFF Festival Director Nashen Moodley said, “I’m excited to present my first Sydney Film Festival program, opening with the world premiere of the uplifting Australian comedy Not Suitable for Children, a quintessentially Sydney film. Herzlich willkommen zu unserem ersten Newsletter im Jahre 2008. Nach einer kurzen Pause melden wir uns wieder zurück und prä- sentieren Ihnen das Neueste aus Deutschland und den USA. Die große Menge an Neu- veröffentlichungen in diesen beiden Regionen hat dazu geführt, dass wir in der vorliegenden Ausgabe auf die Japan-Releases verzichtet haben. Das holen wir aber selbstverständlich im nächsten Newsletter nach. Für uns Filmsammler fing das neue Jahr bereits mit einer grandiosen Neuigkeit an: die Welt wird blau! Der schon viel zu lange anhaltende Konkurrenzkampf zwischen den beiden High Definition Lagern ”Blu-ray Disc” und ”HD DVD” scheint beige- legt zu sein. Anstoß dazu gab Warner Home Video mit der Ankündigung, ab Mitte 2008 High Definition Versionen nur noch im ”Blu- ray”-Format anzubieten und auf ”HD DVD” zu verzichten. Das löste eine gewaltige Lawine in der DVD-Branche aus und führte zu strahlen- den Gesichtern bei den Fans. Denn damit dürfte die ”HD DVD” auf lange Sicht gesehen vom Markt verschwinden. Logisch dass Toshiba als ”HD DVD”-Verfechter nun alles erdenkliche tut, um sein System am Leben zu erhalten. Immerhin hat man zumindest mit Paramount derzeit noch einen der Großen mit im Boot. -

An open, prejudice- free criterion, yet rigorous in the desire to pinpoint the most interesting paths opening up for cinema the world over. A spectrum covering all potential distances between the biggest US blockbuster, Tropic Thunder, and the most radical, daring cinema represented by Jaime Rosales with Tiro en la cabeza (Bullet in the Head). Imagination, creativity and reflection are common features of films so apparently different from one another, and that’s why we want to bring them together under the spotlight of Zinemaldia. Outlaw Masters Of Japanese Film Dedicated to the memory of my late father, Paul R. Desjardins, 1919–2003, who went through hell his last few years and was consequently unable to finish his own book on his pioneering work in electron microscopy (in the field of plant pathology). Also to my mother, Rosemary, who has had her own gauntlet to run in the last year and has managed to come out the other side. Both my parents have always been loyal, loving and there for me, never turning their backs on me during my extended period of raising hell. To my girl, Lynne Margulies, a truly great soulmate in all things, including the creative process. And to the memory of late director Kinji Fukasaku, a great inspiration to anyone daring to think of giving up in the face of adversity.
